Good video. I find bale grazing a real time saver. Also an excellent soil builder.

I as well. We used to line hay up on the fence line and roll it over for the cows. But that meant stepping in ankle to knee high mud. Now that I have spread it out, the mud is less and easier to maneuver around.

I agree with you about it building up the soil ,and it looks good now where you bale grazed but like you said this was the 3 rd year ,and it definitely is out growing it’s surroundings but does it make up for the previous 2 yrs of dead spot and weeds, personally I would rather spread the fertility across every place accessible, may not show the jump in growth as the 30 ft circles but I believe there’s more tonnage overall and I find I don’t have as much of a pugging problem because the cows are spread out and being spread out everybody gets to eat .Don’t take this comment as a attack ,just my point of view have a great day ,Freddie

Thank you for the comment. I do think it makes up for it as I use a sacrifice paddock. Every year or every two years I choose a new paddock for the cows to bale graze in. This solves many of the concerns you brought forth. I am ok with a reduced yield from 1 .5 acre paddock as I have the rest to cover for the one. If I bale grazed like some suggest with larger bale spacings. I would have dead spots on every inch of the farm. One thing that ultra high density grazing and ultra high density bale grazing provide as a benefit, is ground disturbance. For some ground disturbance is a bad thing. They claim with heavy clay soils you don't want to be out there if you leave a single hoof print. But why? It incorporates more matter into the soils. Gets the clay layer mixed with the topsoil and creates more vigorous growth. A freshly plowed field grows more rapidly than a hay field. I do understand and agree that everything has its benefits and it's drawbacks. For me I see more benefits in my practices. I also don't have winter water out in the pastures so I'm limited on where I can graze anyhow.

Fredie, you are correct, unrolling bales results in smaller amounts of litter covering a much larger area. Of course you won't get the huge results that the small area around the round bale shows. There are other benefits to unrolling round bales like the ability to ration the amount of hay consumed, less soil compaction and pugging, more room for all animals to eat at once, covering more area with a small amount of litter, etc. Unrolling round bales daily does take more labor than setting out a weeks worth of round bales at a time. This video was not a good comparison on bale grazing vs. bale unrolling.
