Hey Randy, thank you for all of the info and work you put into this channel. I got serious about learning to bass fish about 6 years ago, my guess is you have forgotten more about bass fishing than I will learn during the rest of my life. I primarily fish Northern California Lakes and The Delta. On the west coast one of the often referred to Jerkbait gurus is Tactical Bassin when they were at Clear Lake. I think (which isn’t saying a lot) this is a great example of the spectrum of opinion through which we all must be aware and chose for conditions. What I learned: Baitcaster, 12lb flouro, suspend without movement. I’ve not done badly with Jerkbait, but always looking to get better. I look forward to trying your setup and technique tips. Thanks again.

Hey Randy, love your videos - please keep making them. I've actually been watching you for a while and the other day stumbled across tournament footage from I think maybe 89/90 where you're casting jigs over willow trees in hurricane-flooded water to catch ridiculous fish and only realized it was you after they showed the weigh-in. Then I saw some more stuff about how you'd taken apart your boat to fit it under a bridge to access water that other anglers hadn't, and I was like, yea that sounds right lol.

Curious as to why you don’t like braid with a long floro leader for your spinning set up? Straight floro is always such a pain with line twist and wanting to jump off the spool and loop. I’ve been using spinning gear braid/floro for years when fishing the starboard side of my boat and a baitcasting set up for port. It may also be my jerk style which is horizontal vs vertical to the water which for me worked better with arm fatigue issues…great video thx for info!

great seminar Randy! Hope you'll do a more in depth video about how to fine tune the jerkbaits in colder months in order to suspend or slow sink. I found that 101 original or +1 tend to float and rise pretty fast in cooler water than in warmer. I usually try to avoid that by putting a large split ring in every treble or by changing the treble one size larger

Hi Randy ...Does the same apply for early fall before the water cools down to the winter temps. I am sure that with most situations water clarity and wind as well as temp play huge rules in the fishes attitude, but I am more asking about cadence and colors. I fish a highland reservoir with deep clear water most times and very little weeds and a large small mouth population in it. I been waitin for this one, Sir. Although I have taken most of this info in from the winter sessions on W2F; its' always good to get a refresher on the bullet points. Along with the 110 + 1 Jr, the Trick Darter is a little Sniper out there as water temps are climbing or falling.I have yet to throw it in 38 degree water yet.I'm a little dude,so I use a Shimano 6'6" Sellus and get good results without snapping the water or ground.I just cannot afford the WhipSnake or Orochi or any megabass rod as of yet. Anyways man; you're def an angler full of wisdom and you share it - I don't judge other men period; let alone by their overall tournament winnings. I use both, spinning and casting. My casting setup is a Megabass JBS fitting with a ‘22 metanium shallow. Slows me to east run 8lb and cast a mile. The one thing I prefer with a spinning rod is the drag, otherwise the casting combo is much easier to fish all day

The thing of geometry of the cast retrieve. Is a whole subject area by itself. That seems to be important to jerk bait lure fishing (that is one of my take-away's from the lesson on jerk bait fishing here). It's a thing that was reinforced in this seminar. And I had not picked up on it too much before.

I can look at lines designed for Pike fishing with retrieved lures in Sweden. Or lines that were intended to fish for steelhead in Alaska State in America. Or lines designed to fish with bass bugs and other large (i.e. jerk bait profile and sized lures), in western areas of Montana, Wyoming or Idaho States. And lines intended to be used to fish with lures. That get up to as large as swimbait and glidebait scale. In States such as Michigan. These are all different parts of the world in which fishing is done. Using retrieved lures of various kinds and styles. And the thing of design of the line from a point of view of assisting the retrieve to remain at the required depth in the water. For long enough. That is a common preoccupation with anglers that fish for other species too. That is another thing that is exactly similar in jerk bait fishing for bass. To other types of fishing in other parts of the world.

That tells you why jerk bait lure fishing is a really strange method. Because it incorporates those aspects that anglers such as Goddard and the English surface dry fly anglers understood. In relation to how the fish see the bait, and how the water clarity plays a factor. To the way in which the retrieve of the bait works. The jerk bait is intended to imitate a real bait fish. So depth and retrieve come into play. There are a couple of inputs into that conversation. About lines, depth, speed and retrieve. In relation to fishing that are unique. Because they represent that same 'fifty years' of learning thing. That Randy is talking about in that seminar. One of those talks was by Tommy Lynch of Michigan. Episode 347 of the Wet Fly Swing series of interviews. Is really about what Tommy calls 'a sales pitch' in fly fishing. Using Rapala and jerkbait lure inspired flies. In which they fish for bass and trout in those colder northern rivers.

Back in April in 2020. I'm glad that George Cook, explained at length how one system operates. He's done it all. The dry fly style of fishing that Goddard would have been familiar with. The bass fishing, the lake fishing for trout and bass. In a lot of States. A lot of climates. He's worked and fished a lot in Alaska on rivers that are extremely large, angry and fast moving (where line control presents all kinds of issues). And how the anglers came up with strategies to try and cope with that. His interview at the Gig Harbour Fly Shop in Washington State from April 2020. Is a very good journey into the subject matter. Of fishing depths, lure presentation and line control. It doesn't really matter what kind of tackle it refers to. Spinning, bait cast, fly rod. At the end of the day, it's about a lure presentation and retrieve. And as much as many of those anglers have understood. And they have figured out. There are still big un-awnsered questions about all of it. I would put Randy's conversation about the Jerk Bait lure presentation. Alongside some of those other ones. That stand out to me, in terms of depth and knowledge. And there's a similarity too in what all of them focus attention on. Even though they're all fishing different geography for different kinds of fish.

Great video very informational I like the idea of using the spinning reel I've only been using a bait caster for a couple years now I've used a spinning reel for 30+ I'm curious about what you said about back reeling I probably have at least 10 spinning reels from 20$ to 320$ don't think you can back reel on any of them I do have a bait caster probably older than me that doesn't even have drag that will back reel. That's crazy 37 lb striper I've caught 2 or 3 lb white bass that have straighten my hooks on jerk bait

I’ve really enjoyed the jerk bait talk today I live in the middle of the Eastern part of NC our water Clarity vary in the 6in to 3.5 feet in the winter +++ the weather usually changing nearly in the winter months , so it may end up like if the hook ain’t in the water you cannot catch any fish. I know that you run jerkbaits on a spinning reel with light line. I usually tie a palomar knot and changing colors with a decent sized jerkbait uses up a lot of line. (I always pull the tag end to close the loop in order to avoid friction burning the main line) Do you have any suggestions for other good knots or a better way to do this in order to minimize the amount of wasted line? Or is that something you just do not really worry about? Just curious about your honest preferences.

You can easily cast 6 lb test on a BFS setup….I haven’t fished straight fluoro on a spinning outfit for bass in almost a decade….I can cast much further with braid mainline….I just don’t like line twist of fluoro on spinning outfits…10 lb braid is equivalent to 2 lb test monofilament…..also, 8 lb fluoro is about as low as I’d go if I was fishing a $20+ vision 110….10 lb test is a safer option. I’d much prefer if my jerkbait didn’t sink out of the package, especially if I’m fishing in shallow water, and my bait is already near the bottom….I want my jerkbait to be true suspending or slow float, with the lure pointing in a nose down orientation…the vision 110 is a jerkbait that needs to be twitched, not ripped hard…slight twitches of your rod tip gets that bait dancing/darting…strong rips/twitches will blow out the movement…
