G2 was honestly an alright comic. The fight where Bludgeon’s pretender shell is destroyed and the inner robot keeps on going has to be one of my favorite fights in all of Transformers.

funny thing about #10, in Japan they had a recolor of MP-01 Convoy complete with all the damage from the fight with Megatron and released it as Sleep Convoy. It was pretty cool looking, especially the ghostly transparent weapons that came with him, and a dim LED instead of a bright one to light the Matrix in his chest as if to symbolize the dying spark in the Matrix itself.

Prime’s death in Transformer movie is why the movie bombed in 1986. Whoever came out with that idea to kill him in the film should’ve been fired. I was a kid and I cried in the theater 😢😢

I wonder if the ending of Beast Wars Season 2 counts as a G1 Prime death. As BW Megatron did cause a time flux after blowing up G1 Prime's head. Which if left unrepaired would have cause the Maximals (And perhaps the Predacons) to cease to exist)

A death I like is the armada Optimus death. He dies by blocking a super weapon from destroying the earth and uses the power from the matrix to stop it but at the end he fades to white and poofs into dust. What stands out to me is he does stay dead for a bit and the autobot conflict over it is interesting but megatron reaction was really good it was a shock to megatron that he actually died and when Optimus does comeback you can hear the joy in megatron voice

I generally prefer Optimus deaths where he couldn't have made a rational choice and saved himself Like in Armada where he took the full brunt of the Hydra cannon, but not like in the movie where just shooting Megatron in the shoulder would've been enough to spare himself.

I also had heard about a theory that say Hot Rod was the one that shot down Optimus when the camera wasn't focus on him during the fight with Megatron, I can imagine Megatron, Kup and the others just see Hot Rod do It and preffer do nothing XD

I have not read any of the comics to be fair, but this was a really interesting and informative list. I am a fan of the kiss players concept and really would have like to have seen a video adaption if the story dubbed in English. I own Kiss Players Optimus Prime and a bunch of other alternators. I was really sad when Prime died in the movie. But I did also like Rodimus Prime. Thank you for another awesome video.

It's a magical girls series, which pretty much never gets dubbed into English. Sailor Moon is practically the only one to ever break that barrier, and even that was criticized for too much sexualization of minors.

The reason I completely avoided the Marvel Comics and adhered to the G1 cartoon continuity for a VERY long time was that stupid, stupid death where Optimus blows himself up because he accidentally allowed some NPCs to die in a video game. The difference between the death in the movie- which did in fact make me cry as a child- and that comic is night and day. Around the time Titan books re-printed the Marvel comics I finally read the Simon Furman run, which was as great and iconic as other fans kept telling me- but I still have zero interest in reading the rest of the Budianski years. I can't bring myself to do it. The handful of other issues I've managed to read from his run (the Blaster/Scrounge/Space Bridge issues- hey Hasbro, there's an idea for a new Titan figure) weren't AS bad, but dear God.

So, Optimus was kept alive through residual energy from Unicron given to Galvatron that Marrisa Fairbourne got, and gave to Optimus through kissing... Got to admire the creativity Kiss Players sometimes, although it still really shouldn't exist

There a youtube channel called rodimus primal that has a interview where Bob explained things he did or was force to do in the first 55 issues of the comic. You actually did miss another Japanese prime death, in one of the continuations of the legends comic (Specifically the finale of the generations selects tie in manga which takes place after return of convoy and maybe even japanese G2 if i'm remembering correctly) Prime dies in battle again before getting revived a few panels later by the matrix.

I'm not familiar with Comics so sticking to all the times Optimus has died on screen... G1 Movie Dark Awakening Beast Wars season 1 finally, technically not Optimus Prime but still an Optimus so I'm counting it. Beast Machines Optimus Primal dies AGAIN allowing Cheetor to lead the the Maximals for a while. Armada Optimus dying and this being the only time in the ENTIRE series where Sparkplug is actually called by his correct name and it's not even Optimus who says it, Hot Shot calls him by his actual name for the first and ONLY time when Sparkplug retrieved the Matrix after Optimus died. I'm pretty sure UT Optimus died once per series but I don't remember Energon or Cybertron that well. Armada stood out to me just because it's the only time in the entire series where Sparkplugs correct name was actually spoken. Animated having the SHORTEST and QUICKEST death. Quickest in that Optimus actually gets killed during the PILOT of the series, that's the only time Optimus has died almost immediately. And shortest death being that Sari used her AllSpark key to bring Optimus back like less than a minute later. RotF Optimus dies and the plot of the movie ends up revolving around finding the Matrix in order to revive him from the dead. Also there's a really stupid line about how "Only a Prime can kill a Prime" but for that to be true then only the Fallen would be able to kill Optimus and Vice versa. However Megatron kills Optimus there by proving that you DON'T have to be a Prime to kill a Prime. Of course Megatron also fought Optimus 3 on 1 but still. There's also a line in the first movie about Optimus and Megatron being Brothers, the fact that Prime is treated like a family name in the live action films prompting people to believe that Bayverse Megatron is a Prime. Or it's just terrible writing. Prime Optimus dies only to be brought back it's sequel... and oddly Prime actually two different sequels that bring back Optimus. In Japan there's Transformers Go! Where Optimus' ghost actually looks like how he did in Beast Hunters until he's brought back in a new body. In America RID2015 inexplicably has a statue of Optimus in his new body that no one should even know about since he didn't look like that till AFTER he died and he hasn't been resurrected yet. Cyberverse TECHNICALLY Main Universe Optimus Prime never dies in that series. However we do see a flash back of Megatron X killing the Optimus Prime of his universe and Windblade does encounter the ghost of Optimus Prime from the X Universe inside Megatron's Matrix. I think that's it, I'm pretty sure there's other on screen deaths I could have mentioned here but those are the ones I remember the most.

No. That transtector was intended to be a new body for Optimus, but his spark/laser core/whatever you want to call his life force never inhabited it. Therefore, it doesn't count as an Optimus death.

9. The time Prime died after being revived by Quintessons. Maybe the Autobot morticians repaired him and gave him a new paint job out of respect before laying him to his “final” rest. 5. “Alright. You got seven days with him. And be grateful, ‘cause this jerk’s been in and out of the Well of All Sparks so many times that even giving him an extra week is a miracle. So don’t do anything stupid like immediately throw him into battle for action po-aaaaaand they’re gone already. Crap.” Seriously though. You could have had Optimus take care of some final business, tie up his loose ends, pass some advice or comfort to the friends he’d leave behind. And instead he’s thrown back in the fight like a common grunt. Classy, guys. Reeeaaal classy.

Impossible with the quintesson example, because he was flying into a star as another bit of self-sacrifice at the end of that episode, and that's how "The Return of Optimus Prime" started up, with the bad guy and his girlfriend in space intercepting Optimus' shuttle as it flew into the star. There was no way for anyone to have gone and repaired him during that time.

At this point, watching this video, I've got a tiny Exand Shadow in my head screeching into my ear "Of course you can revive him! HE'S A ROBOT! Just rebuild him and crap!", and I have to mentally slap him down with a tiny imaginary Johnny 5 from the movie "Short Circuit" telling him about how he would die if his memory banks were to be destroyed, so the same would be done with Optimus, and yadda yadda yadda. Though, honestly, if Optimus' mind can be saved to a human-built 5 inch floppy in the 80's, 1. surprised he hasn't been killed by Spike Witwicky putting a refrigerator magnet on his head as a joke, yet, and 2. Starscream's mutation of an indestructible spark doesn't seem as awesome, now, considering how easy it is to cntrl-c, cntrl-v Optimus' brain for posterity's sake...

My sisters boyfriend at the time gave me his VHS copy of the original movie back in 2003. Even though I didn’t grow up with the original generation one cartoon that movie still wrecked me really good. I could even finish it for almost half of the year. Afterwords I got pretty used to him dying at least once and almost every series he appears in and the only death that really gets to me is the one in the headmasters because of how pointless it was.

I'd like to know at what point someone decided "Optimus dies and comes back Jesus style" was a key part of his character? Because I want to go back in time and smack someone for that. Didn't he die like twice in the Bay films? At least in Dreamwave's continuity he either disappears or is comatose, but if you really want to do a "Prime isn't there" story, just have him send some troops out on a mission that he can't attend due to other Prime-related duties. You don't have to kill/coma/stasis lock him every time.
