IMO, what prevents you from decapitation is the windshield and its sturdiness. One SL was flipped on a circuit, and the structure was not affected, the glass did not even break. The rollbar was made to future-proof the car against regulations and ensure a global distribution. Still a good idea anyway.

Informative video as always. Thanks A few points from a long time owner. The folding roof never failed me in 16 years of ownership (it was then 22 years old. You just need to operate it at least once a month. Well it always worked for me, and I regularly had the hardtop on and off and then on again... When you are about to put the soft top down consider putting a rolled up soft clean towel lengthwise in the back window ( create about a 4inch roll all the way across the folding roof) when the roof is halfway down you need to get out of the car stop the roof insert the towel (boring I know) This will stop the perspex creasing and cracking at the edges, as the perspex hardens over time. Sure you have to stop the roof going up halfway and then put the towel somewhere . I suggest the space where the roof folds into but it's worth it to avoid the perspex damage (I think) On the v8 SL's using the gearbox shifter brings the car alive when you want more excitement. Lastly the solid carved out of granite feel of the car you feel in a a well maintained never goes away even after all these years, so when there is only two of you in years to come, you should consider adding another one to your garage, To keep that feel and not have mechanical surprises, as you said earlier, you do have use them regularly. Perhaps keep in touch with the new buyer and buy it back again for half the dollars. You will love having it in your garage.

That car today is 35 years old. So yeah, these cars are safeish. Problem is perhaps if you crash really badly with another modern vehicle, this thing will still most likely loose the fight, and most likely pretty badly. Judging by the end of the video Hoovie has bought a Ferrari 328, probably a GTS as Ferrari only sold a very few GTBs in the US. I must admit I approve, the 308 and 328 2-seaters are wonderful to drive, aside from the extremely heavy clutch, and are probably the easiest Ferraris to own, but this is Hoovie and, judging by the way the values of these have gone over the last few years, this one probably has issues. A friend of mine had a 328 GTB that he used as his daily transport for more than 15 years and it was extremely reliable and surprisingly cheap to own...

Most other cars are at the scrap yard by now. It's when Chrysler stepped in things went downhill as they began to cheap out on various parts. Note also that Mercedes that were made in the US, rather than in Germany, are worse in terms of build quality, that also mean reliability wise. In Europe, US model imports are not favored, because of this.

Tyler, have you ever given any consideration to adding a genuine muscle car to the hoopty Fleet? While the prices of the premium and more popular cars from the classic muscle era have skyrocketed, there are still several diamonds in the Ruff available out there. For example the Buick Grand Sport made from 1970 through 1972 could be had with a big block and a 4-speed, the exact same body style and suspension as the Chevelle and GTO, and is still available for under $20,000. Several makes from American Motors can be had at good prices, and if you're willing to do a little polishing you can actually find the more popular Mustangs, Camaros, Chevelles, and GTOs at decent prices. I'd like to see one in the fleet and get your opinion on it. If nothing else, it would hold its value one hell of a lot better than the stuff you usually buy and repair cost on classic American Iron is a fraction of what the Euro stuff runs

I see a 3000GT in back? I am assuming its turbo. Please don't bash it. Regular car reviews did recently, he was being a puss because owner was worried it would break...(That is nonsense) You have to sort out a neglected 3000GT/Stealth Turbo AWD before you can really really enjoy it. (My Stealth TT never had any serious problems, I just kept up on maintenance. 11Yr ownership/I am 28Yr old...) Also Tyler there is 19Ts/DR750 turbo kits etc. you get that done to your car and you'll shit your pants... Lot of forums and few local people I know have 440AWHP-1100AWHP 3000GT/Dodge Stealths... One is a Master mechanic named Ray Pampena. His current car looks stock as can be but is setup to 700-900AWHP.... It sounds soo rude like a aggressive V8... He said it's his Corvette/Viper/Porsche destroyer, but super comfortable. Love the mercedes except the 03 scares me. I have a 92 300D Turbo Diesel 361K. (love it)

i honestly don't know where people keep getting the idea that Mercedes dropped quality during the late 90's early 2000's..... i've owned nearly ever generation of Mercedes from 1983 to 2008, and they get more reliable and more luxurious the newer they get. now i also do all the work on my cars, so i know how the engineering changes over the years. more electronics does NOT mean less reliable. electronics are actually more reliable than mechanical points and timing mechanisms. people often think "ohhhh its got computers i dont have to maintain it" NOOOOOOOOO, you have to maintain them and do proper services.

Yes Tyler i think your mind is twisted. You keep the cars that catch fire and blow up, and sell cars that seem to be in great condition
