Oh it's Professor Harrington at McGill! This is my field of research too (at University of Toronto)! I study freshwater mussel byssal adhesion (so the invasive zebra and quagga mussels), so they live in very different environments as the marine mussels here, but they still attach to things with the byssus structure! Biochemically very different though and lots of interesting biochemistry to discover! Good to see your work in media Prof Harrington!

Thank you, guys, for another bit of knowledge about nature's wonders - byssus, a new interesting word and phenomenon to get acquainted with. You're doing great work to keep us educated!

This is so fascinating. I've always wondered what that aspect of the mussels was? That imaging process is amazing & being able to recreate a 3d model is so useful. I had no idea that was the active part that the mussel uses to grip onto its surroundings. I live near the Oregon coast & those things have to be so strong to withstand the battering they'd get from the ocean against the rocky coastline. I've seen so many of them hanging around & collected some of them from the rocks. It's cool to see your work is learning about the material science but also other stuff like the ways the mussels release this part thru an uptake in serotonin. That's really interesting. I can't help but wonder what things we might be able to use this for if we found a way to produce or utilize this material? Since it's as hefty as kevlar.. who knows what uses it could have.

I just bought some mussels to cook and I thought it was some woman's hair stuck in the mussels 😂 I was going to take them back thank God I decided to go online and check.

Highly interesting video! But sad that the makers - as so many others - don't trust their content and spoil it with annoying and unnecessary music.

Bit of a reach there. Music is fine and helps occupy empty space.

I think the music is very chill and appreciated.

@@mapleman95 I don't like music in docus. There is no point in that.
