Drivers in San Benito County are navigating through a new and innovative 'turbo' roundabout at the intersection of Highways 25 and 156, between Gilroy and Hollister. Here's how to use it: abc7ne.ws/3vwv02X

As someone who hits this roundabout nearly every weekday, it is WAY faster than the old intersection, and safer too. Sure there are crashes there, but there were more with the old intersection. Not to mention, it's pretty simplistic too.

the only problem I see with this round about is that if you take the wrong lane you'll end up in the wrong road, where as on a regular round about if you miss your road just keep goin around till it comes around again.

So, not paying attention is the fault of the infrastructure and not of the driver????? If you pick correctly on a turbo roundabout before even going on the roundabout, you physically can't miss your exit. And it's easy to remember: left lane goes left. The middle lane is for straight ahead. Right lane goes right. Honestly how hard can it be.

If you have to change lanes in a modern roundabout it means you entered in the wrong lane. Modern roundabouts don't let you go around and around like a rotary. You have to exit. Turbos just add curbs so drivers that are not paying attention to the lane use signs have to follow the required path.

A 3 inch barrier isn't going to help anyone when someone freaks out and "misses their turn" and either stop completely to clump over or just drives over them (trucks more so than cars I'm sure). If there's anything I've learned in 30 years in driving is most people can't accept "I'll take the next turn and double back" it's "I need to get off here, now, that is non-negotiable"

At first glance this looked like a terrible idea, but having the curbs in the roundabout to guide people seems like it should make this pretty straightforward. The only major issue I see is the occasional moron who stops _in_ the roundabout is now going to cause a potentially much bigger/dangerous pileup behind them without good evasive options because of the curbs.

Besides the "regular" roundabouts, there are about 300 turbo roundabouts here in The Netherlands. About the turbo roundabout: The turbo roundabout is a specific kind of spiralling roundabout that was developed in The Netherlands in 1996 by Mr. L.G.H. The only way it will actually work the way they want it to is if there are concrete barriers between lanes making it impossible to change lanes once you're in them. Otherwise some people will try anyway. Look at how people get into and out of HOV lanes illegally in between entrances and exits. At least they do where I've seen them used in California and Texas.

You are so far behind the curve. Round abouts are very easy to use just give way to traffic on your left. Getting rid of stop signs will be a start too. Replacing with roundabouts keeps traffic flowing reducing the ridiculous congestion. And may consider have off ramps before the on ramps as all of them are to small. Adding further guidelines like if your merging onto a freeway from another people already on the freeway should change to second lane before the junction so people merging dont have to worry about people speeding up there ass.

What needs to be done is a proper overpass constructed. People's safety is not where you need to be cheap. Hollister had a horribly dangerous intersection at 152/156. The millions of people that've driven through there can attest to how life threatening it was for... idk....40 years. It took a heartbreaking gruesome accident to finally cause an overpass to be built to accommodate the increased traffic flow. Hollister has another horrible intersection at 156/Union/Mitchell Road. This one isn't particularly dangerous, but it can take an hour to get across it. Hollister is landlocked in a bit by inefficient roadways. We need to learn from things like the Paradise Fire. I've seen so many horrendous accidents at 25/156... One of these days we'll be hearing about a semi plowing through that intersection, flying through the air, and causing a huge mess. Not if, but when. Overpass is the real answer. The turbo roundabout is a huge waste of money and wasted time in delays. Overpass is what the people want. Can't make a u turn. I've seen people turn left at the entry. Everyone switches lanes in the thing. It's all bad bad bad. The correct answer for 2 large highways interesting would be an overpass. Especially for the volume of traffic this place sees.

Since I work in an area with many "new" drivers, I have a pro tip. they don't understand anything but red. That means if there is no red stop sign or red light, they will proceed without caution. Flashing yellow lights, people doing jumping jacks in Hi Vis orange suits screaming "STOP", police cars with flashing lights, orange cones, fire trucks, ambulances, a huge crater with an alien space ship sticking out of it on fire... No red light? Then it means go. No they can't read. Now imagine them at the roundabout. I've already seen collisons and fist fights. Good luck.

@@ElPolloTokoMaybe the answer would be rumble strips on the approach to the roundabout. In the UK, these are slightly raised lines across the carriageway which are placed closer together as you close on the roundabout as a physical reminder to slow down. I'm not sure having raised lane separators is a good idea though. If I miss an exit on a roundabout, I continue around and manoeuvre into the correct lane to exit.

If people slowed down and drove more cautiously and shared the roundabout rightly it would run smoother. People are idiots

I hate roundabouts. I missed my exit on one in Colorado without realizing and accidentally took the one going the wrong way on the interstate and was stuck going the wrong direction for several miles until there was another exit. They are confusing if you are not from the area and trying to watch for signs in a short distance while also trying to steer in a curve while staying in your lane, while also watching the cars next to you for crowding into your lane. These are popping up all over as the new in thing, sometimes 2 of these in one block which is ridiculously confusing if you are not familiar with the area. We ran into them in weird places far from cities our last trip, and no idea why somebody decided they were an improvement for a normal intersection. It might make sense for an odd configuration, like a sharp angle or multiple crossings of busy roads, but some places are not made easier with this change.

I wonder when the traffic lights will come back. California drivers are too impatient and don't follow rules anyway. I saw roundabouts in the Far East during that skirmish. Cars were just picking their own lines and ignoring the officer standing on a pedestal in the middle of the confusion. We don't need no stinkin lines.
