So glad I grew up with a Pro in my house......I'm not a percussionist but I remember sitting on a kit when I was a kid, and reproducing an (it was a very weird time signature) off-beat signature naturally. My dad didn't leave me with much, but raising me around so many musicians had lasting benefits. The only advice I can give an up- and-comer is to use your emotions to channel....and use music that inspires those emotions as a wellspring to help channel. Using this method allows you to soak in Music like a sponge, and incorporate it into your play naturally, and you won't just be reproducing another's sound.
