I have a 2013 328i, ZSL, ZPP, 6MT, that I got new-to-me that had 34K miles and in 2 1/2 years now has 73K miles on it. I have been very pleased with it overall. My car doesn't have the lighting package, or the parking package. The stock halogen lights are absolutely terrible, arguably even dangerously terrible. I have added Sylvania H7 Ultrastar bulbs, which has improved it a bit, and I installed a Bimmer Tech rear camera kit to address backing up. I share your issues about steering and auto-stop-start. To be charitable, the steering feel is subtle, and in a turn I have no idea what the front tires are doing. My start-up ritual is: push start, push disable auto stop start, put it in sport mode. I would enjoy having it coded out someday. The N20 has good power and torque, good fuel economy, but lacks the wonderful sounds of BMW inline sixes. The injector clatter makes it sound like a diesel at idle. The 8AT ZF is a great automatic, to be sure, and, from having service loaners, I have experienced what you do when putting the car in Sport. Later F30s allow you to customize though i-Drive the settings for each system. Still , selecting a manual saves you all that. I drive in sport mode 99% of the time, the setting where it feels more like a proper BMW, and I don't have to fiddle with settings. In sum, as you conclude, the F30 is great daily driver that will give you some fun, good fuel economy, and a comfortable, dare I say, luxurious ride when you need it.

My 2014 F32 435i keeps the auto start/stop in the mode you had it in even after the ignition is switched off. Glad they made that change, although I think they did a pretty good job with the system itself. It starts back up quickly and doesn’t shudder like other cars out there.

ESD, thanks for the great video! I've owned my very first and only BMW...a '13, 335i, M-Sport with DHP since late 2012 now with 89K miles. I would say the auto start stop was not an issue anymore after I had it coded to no auto stop start but I can I manually activate it if I wanted to (like when I'm running out of gas). To me the steering feel, weight and feedback is excellent in the Sport or Sport Plus mode with activated Chassis and Drivetrain setting with the auto ZF8 shifter in Sport (just a flick to the left) and with traditional tires (forget the run flats). It would have been awesome (perfect) if it could be permanently placed in that setting. My wife drives it too so she appreciates the comfort setting...we both happy :)

Health & Wellness if you think Toyota are somehow more reliable than a BMW within the last ten years, think again. Go take a look at some of the consumer reports rankings of BMW's vs Toyota during that time frame. Honda on the other hand, was fined in Jan 2016 by the federal government the largest allowable fine they could impose on an automaker, twice, for a total of $70 million. One fine ($35 million) was for under-reporting the number of mechanical problems that new Honda owners were reporting to dealerships, for the previous 11 years, but Honda management in Tokyo purposefully withheld the problems from our Fed. Govt. The second $35M fine was for Honda underreporting the number of deaths in their cars for the same previous 11 years. Don't buy into the Honda reliability hype because it's simply not true! This year they were ranked way down at like #18 in consumer reports auto brands reliability, whereas BMW was #2 or #3

About having to switch to Sport to get better steering weight, but at the same time putting you on a lower gear, does it let you change up manually at least? I personally have a dual clutch and never use Normal mode because it shifts too smoothly it's said to wear out the gearbox quicker. In Sport mode, it does stay at a certain gear when it could use the next one up, but it allows me to shift by myself to put it at the right cog.
@Tortelli-NL6 жыл бұрын
You can manual shift the car, but it will go back to auto in 30 seconds or so. When you push the "gear leaver" to the left it will keep the gears (will shift down to prevent stalls or overrevs).

I've driven a 2016 335d and 2018 230i as loaners from bmw and their steering even in sport + was absolutely terrible. Feels like a Japanese sedan. Bmw has lost their way and the e80 and e90 series was the last bmw with their famous steering feel. An electric steering and automatic bmw is no different to me than a Lexus or infinity. I would rather buy one of those and have actual reliability, not bleed money on repairs, have a better interior, and have almost the same performance. I have an e90 manual m sport and am willing to make the repair sacrifices to keep that car going as long as possible because bmws short of an m2 or m3 no longer have the characteristic steering feel. They are nothing more than a good engine riding on their own legacy. The handling and feel is gone. And if you want a fast automatic german cruiser might as well get a Mercedes since they've been doing that better for longer. Unless its an M, Bmw is no longer for enthusiasts. It is for status chasing posers.

German cars make more sense when you think about the mindsets of the people that built them. German car engineers expect their owners to be obsessed with maintenance- when you do every recommended maintenance item exactly on time, you have a lot less problems. And the engineers expect you to fix problems as soon as you start seeing the smallest symptoms, versus letting them get bad. Germans love fixing and maintaining their cars, it's a cultural thing. Now when you give a German car to Americans, they neglect them and aren't as rigorous with the maintenance, and that's where the problems arise. I treat every part on my BMW's as a regular maintenance item because I know that nothing lasts forever, and that attitude has worked out well for me, given that I've been daily driving old BMW's with over 200,000 miles without ever getting stranded.

That is exactly what is going on. Oil change after 5000 miles rather than the standard, any change in engine noise investigate and fix as the engines rarely change sound unless there is a problem. I suspect his one needs a water pump after watching the first video. He spoke about the engine noise and filling up the coolant. You wont know until its actually investigated. Danny has a good point. I have owned a few BMW's myself including the F30. Anyways he should change the steering wheel to the sport and the cluster to the 6WB. Its adds to the cosmetics and you forget the steering feel issue.

My old 2013 335i Coupe turned off the auto start/stop as well and it persisted. Also, not sure if you're aware of this but back in 2007 when the 335i Coupe and sedan came out, there were several car magazines that toad tested the car and also like you noticed that the car had significantly more HP and torque than the BMW claimed 300/300, A couple of magazines went and had the car dynoed and the HP/Torque "at the wheel" was like 336/325. BMW has always been conservative and understates its power figures. BMW also reports their 0-60 times slower than any other source and its usually at least 2/10 sec slower than ANY other source including the mainstream auto press. Speaking of 0-60, the manual transmission is almost half a second slower than the 8 speed auto. I used to be a diehard 6sp guy, but technology marched on, and so did I.

Lane Jones You marched your lazy ass to an auto. Driving is driving and the “ Ultimate Driving Machine” means left foot and right hand. Automatics are for fatties who wanna text and gobble burritos on their way to work. I can drop the clutch and push the front end into a corner or gas it and break the 265’s loose in the rear. Cause my 335 is a manual.
@ljones95996 жыл бұрын
mhks68 Actually, I used to be that way, and would only consider manual cars. 4 of the last five Porsches were manuals, as well as my first two BMW's. I learned how to drive in the mountains of Colorado where we lived growing up. Berthoud pass was where I first learned heal toe and I only was interested in manuals. Then I got smart and noticed that manual cars, at least BMW's, are slower than their automatic equipped versions. By a not so insignificant amount either.. That was a wake call. Also, not that I'm paying attention to gas mileage, autos get better mileage. I'm interested in performance, and for that reason, I kissed manuals goodbye.

The best way to get sport steering without sacrificing fuel economy is putting the gear in "manual" and using the paddles/lever. I do it all the time.
@antoniocampos66276 жыл бұрын
I have a 335i and the best way to have sport steering while maintaining fuel economy is by throwing it into manual and shift it up to the 8th gear.
@danadams7976 жыл бұрын
Two things about the auto start/stop: 1. If you want to keep it active, you can temporarily override the function by moving the shift lever over to manual. Then you'll stay in S1/M1 gear if, say, you're waiting for a gap in traffic to turn left. 2. If you want to defeat it permanently and you don't have the skills to code, you can get a Carly OBD port connector which will do it for you. I drive the ZF 8 speed in manual most of the time, so I'm rarely surprised by an unexpected engine off. We have some pretty long stoplights around where I live, so I keep the function enabled and leave the car in Drive when the oil's hot and I'm driving from red light to red light.
@mikezerker69256 жыл бұрын
Your being pretty nit-picky about the things you hate about the car. For example, you love the fuel economy - well, the auto start-stop feature of the engine contributed to that 28 mpg rating. Why is adaptive headlights a mind blowing thing in 2018?? My 2007 Lexus GS had them!

I drive a 2016 F31 340i M and do completely agree with you. The steering sucks big time. No feel at all! I had never a car where i felt so disconnected with everything as this one. I also agree on the limited options of customization. One thing i don't agree is the ZF. I don't like it. In Comfort mode it's to slow and the engine is not really responsive and in Sport mode it's not really fast either but hammers the gears that the whole car unsettles for a moment. Not my liking at all. What is indeed very good (for a Turbo) is the engine (in my case the B58) it really has lots of torque low down and delivers all the way until the red line. The engine surprised me actually, i didn't expect it to be so good.

The auto start/stop can be coded to remember the last setting, so it will stay off. You can do it via the Carly or BimmerCode apps.

They are still trying to figure out that oil gasket -- seems to be the eternal problem. Also it's noteworthy to point out that the 2012 is the first iteration of the new design and may have some bugs to work out

A BMW is like being married to a gorgeous woman that likes to have sex just as much as you do. You pay for her good looks up front, and you pay for maintenance of those good looks. Driving an F30 is ALMOST like having sex every time. Now, on the other end of the spectrum. Owning a Toyota Corolla is like being married to a Russian babushka. Cheap and reliable. Always available for the job, never complains, needs almost no maintenance. Trust me......I’m married to both

They fixed the auto stop start not persisting in the 2014+. You can get it coded to persist. I hated that stupid asshole feature, and if you think its annoying/biggest problem on yours trying it on mine! I had a manual and if I would go to start and roll without hitting the gas it would stop the fucking car.

auto start stop doesn't reset on my 2012 bmw 335i f30. Did they software patch it?

Sport and Sport+ do not allow 8th gear use. Aggravating as hell with no excuse You are correct; any BMW without M Sport seats might as well be another Corvette or Mustang seat. Automatic engine shut down upon stop can be programmed off so the default is engine always on. EPA is to thank for the stock configuration.

Max Nix maybe because the 8th is overdrive.

What kind of ancient German cars are you buying? Try buying ONE good German sports car instead of three that are out of warranty!

No way your getting 28mpg especially with the way your driving the car

I used to get 25 mpg from my e38 740il when it was newer. Unfortunately it was unreliable as it got older and the fuel economy declined, it sprang leaks and the transmission started to slip. I don't think the driving pleasure makes up for the frustration of having to fix something broken every week. No, I'm too old for that. I'd rather spend my weekends playing golf, or tennis or relaxing by the pool.

Raphael I had a used E38 740iL also, and your comment resonates with me. I’m older now and have different priorities. Can you believe it? My next car will be a hybrid lmao

Great video. I bought the 2012 E92 335i M sport which I think has best of both worlds IMO: the new N55 engine BUT the legacy hydraulic power-steering and great steering feel. I also think the F30 seats are a step-back from the sport seats in E90/E92.

E46 is not even close to as smooth as the newer 3 series.
@waaromleefik24 жыл бұрын
Hey, very nice video I liked it. But there are a few things I would like to point it.. Fact number one is you compare a 3 series family-sedan to a (e46) M3, a car that is made to be driven crazy. Because of all the driver settings, they are trying to make this car for more users. Like new drivers, sporty drivers, old people etc. And number two is if you want a car (especially German cars) to be nice to you, you have to be nice to them :D

They definitely require more care and feeding and, you're right, don't deal with neglect well.

You can code the Auto stop/start function to be persistent, and many many other things. Have you looked into that yet? If not, the easiest way (if you have an iphone) is to use Bimmercode. If you're like me, and you want to understand what the codes do there are VMs available out there that let you do everything by hand but it's much easier to break things so be careful!
@Clutch20156 жыл бұрын
You can EASILY code the car to have it remember your auto start/stop setting. For example if you turn it off it’ll be off the next time you start your car and vice versa

Manuals are overrated these days. They do not hold any certain advantage in modernized cars.

Solid review! My brother and I are about to buy some german rides. Him a f30 335i like yours, and myself a 2011 135i! The n55 is a pretty awesome engine!

Hi, I have an F30 328i manual. Base suspension. I agree with you on most points. I believe you have credibility on this because you also owned an E90 328i. I loved the E90. The 328i/330i in particular. I loved the feeling of the car, the way the steering felt, the compact dimensions of the car, and the high quality interior. With that car, you didn't need the sport package for it to handle well. The suspension was so finely tuned in that car. During the first months of ownership of the F30, I was disappointed with the car. It felt cheap to me, and it was missing all the things that made the E90 feel special. I was ready to get rid of it, and then I decided to take it out on a drive on some twisty backroads. I started to push the car. I began noticing how light the front end felt, how eager it was to change direction at higher speeds, and the steering. In sport mode at higher speeds, it begins talking to you. Now, I still have my complaints with the car. Interior doesn't feel as nice, the run flat tires suck, and the body roll at lower speeds is incredibly annoying. I realized, however, that even though the car isn't as special as it used to be, it still feels like a BMW. After driving a bunch of other cars with turbo 2 liter engines, I realized how smooth and brilliant the N20 is. It's all about perspective. Yes, it isn't as fun as the Alfa Giulia, but that car doesn't come with a stick. And driving stick is super important for me. Also, the stop start system does suck. Thx for you video!

To those looking for a more recent opinion - I bought a 2012 335i Sport package on Dec 2020, car had 90k km now with 92k. Pre purchase inspection found no issues at all, no leaking on valve cover, oil pan or oil filter housing leaks, not even sign of issues. Overall the car was driven less than 10k/year since purchase. The only problem is that I broke the steering rack when I lift the car using the jack, it slip from the support lifting point and hit the base of the rack. The real break lamps tend to burn out constantly. car has PLENTY of power, and it has been reliable so far. I do expect the water pump and thermostat to tap out soon, but its an easy fix that cost around 300USD if you replace it yourself. Smooth engine pretty comfortable, and YEAH do purchase a sport package for the seats.

I suggest you testdrive the LCI F30. BMW addresses almost all of your nitpicks across the board. Steering is significantly improved, the chassis and suspension have all been enhanced (less bodyroll, lower centre of gravity etc), ride quality has improved, there's a ton of cosmetic changes like the new LED headlights (which has translated to other models like the new 5 series and 8 series) that make the car even more timeless, not to mention the new B48 and B58 engines are outstanding with more power down low in the rev range (and with better fuel economy). The F30 has the best reliability versus all previous 3 series (visit the forums...its been out for 6 years + and nothing crazy or major issues like the E90 generation) so while you may like previous gen models, they will produce more mechanics issues = more $$$ out of your pocket. Food for thought .
