Kyle takes you around in the 2020 Nissan Leaf SL Plus 62kWh for a day full of driving. The main objective is to see if thermal throttling "Rapidgate" affects the charging speed after multiple DC Fast Charging sessions.

It was refreshing to see a report on the Nissan Leaf that didn’t dismiss it just because of the DC charging issue and low range. I have a 2018 Leaf 40 kw and find it perfect for my situation. I only drive about 250 miles a month and charge at home with a level 2 plug. At an affordable price of $37,000, comfortable ride, solid reliability, good build quality it is a wonderful around town non-polluting car. Not everyone needs, wants or can afford a Tesla. .

Yeah, I can turtle our Leaf going up a mountain road on a 105° day after 100 miles and a DCFC - big deal. I can also drive it carefully, start fully charged, drive 60mph (NorCal roads), NOT use freakin' B mode (regen heats battery), use LeafSpy, and I can go 450 miles before cratering the charge rate. To some degree, the car reflects the personality and patience of the driver.

I'm debating about taking my LEAF on a big trip from Long Island to Canada, trip's about 580 miles... And ABRP has me doing 7 charge stops. My only major concern: would that cause too much heat to the battery and slow my charge, or as others say, leaving it in D-Mode on highway (while dropping efficiency slightly) would keep the battery a bit cooler? Or should I just rent/borrow an ICE?

@JE-zl6uy We've owned/leased 5 Leafs by now; not a one of them, even the Plus, could make that trip without significant cool-down periods, like a day hike. Or Winter with reduced speeds. Or 2 days. Others may have different opinions.

We did a 1300 mile trip in our former 2019 LEAF SL Plus. 90 degree temps, plus repeated DCFC sessions had us down to as little as 11kw on the DC chargers. They're definitely a regional car, not a trip car.

But they did damage to the reputation of all EVs with the battery degradation. The public believes you have to replace an expensive battery every 5-7 years. They may have permanently damaged Nissan's reputation by not having a affordable battery replacement and continuing to use air cooling on the next generation. Interesting you mentioned the UK a couple of times. I live there, and am on my 3rd Leaf. 30KWh, gen 2 40KWh and now Leaf Plus. Long trips in the 30KWh were possible but were an adventure. The 40KWh was a better car in terms of equipment (Pro-Pilot etc) but there was a problem rapid charging. The dealer updated the software after some initial denial there was a problem, and after that it was better but not as good as the 30KWh on multi-rapid charge trips. The Leaf Plus is better, although due to Covid I've only been able to make two road trips. The first I retraced part of the route I took in the 30KWh from my home in Hampshire up to the Orkney Isles (north of the Scottish mainland). There were some differences so it wasn't a direct comparison, on the full trip I was three up plus luggage, and on the Plus trip it was just me. I drove at 60MPH on the Motorway (Freeway) for a direct comparison. The 30KWh gave me about 100 miles range with a 'just in case' reserve, the Plus gave me a range of 220 miles with a similar reserve. The real difference was in the 30KWh you'd approach a charging station and wonder if you should stop for a quick charge or press on another 30 miles, in the Plus I'd approach a charging station and wonder if I should take a 'rest room break'. I did 192 miles/3.5 hours in one hit, and on the original trip I had made two stops at that point. No real problem with thermal throttling as you put it, I reckon you'd do 550-600 mile trips (in the UK) without worrying about increased charging time. This side of The Pond that counts as a long trip, so the Leaf Plus does what it says on the box. In 'The Colonies' you go in for longer trips (bigger country, obviously) so maybe the lack of active thermal battery management would be a problem. For trips involving just one rapid charge en route, the Leaf is simply great. More than one rapid charge and you might need a bit of patience. Tesla 3? I priced one (in the UK) before changing to the Leaf Plus. Basically £10K ($12K) more expensive on the road. For me not worth it, and being honest not really affordable. Great video, by the way.

100% correct. I have a 40 KWH Tekna. I just ordered a 62 KWH Tekna. I would never drive more than 500 KM in a day. I grew up in the US and now live in Sweden. Even there in the Northeast I would never drive more than 600 KM a day. I prefer to smell the roses. Heck I even find charging to be a relaxing affair. I grab a coffee and work a bit. The gas stations are looking more and more like airport lounges. Heck I can charge at home and I still have a monthly charge subscription :) Finally the cost of a Leaf lease in Sweden is like half a Tesla Model 3 and the terms are much worse.

So I just traded in the Yoder-toter 2019 Chevy Express extended for a Nissan Leaf. Did not find of the CHAdeMO phasing out until last week. I believe the regen is disabled on the Leaf during Cruise Control. Just did an Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Pennsylvania and return. Going mostly all 2 lane scenic roads. Thought mileage left system failed, too many miles left. Free Charge on Pymatuning Lake that borders OH & PA, toity break & learn new Gimble from my son. Off to NY and Lucille Ball Park on Lake Chautauqua has 2 free chargers. Decided to go to Lake Erie, did my 1st CHAdeMO in Westfield, NY, Red Leaf there failing to get it to work and left. Worked going thru my phone app. but started with 70% already, 15 min and cutoff. Up to Erie Coast, Barcelona lighthouse, then east to Presque Isle. 3 sets of 2 free chargers here. Just tested it for a short time. Decided on Interstate return due to high levels of deer hits last year. I-79 - I-80, Ohio Rts 11 & 62 home. On that getting less than advertised compared to much more than advertised. Slow speeds due to construction left me believing the cruise control the only difference. Your testing this online might be a project for you. Dave from NORUSTSTUDIOS & Eltosuper.

We get 110 112 f temperatures where I live. The thing would be thermal throttling every damn day.

I am in the market for an EV. The 2022 Nissan Leaf S is the lowest MSRP mainstream EV. Not counting NEVs. It is one of the few EV to use a ChaDeMo charger port. Do they sell r make a ChaDeMo to CCS adapter? Also, the 2022 Nissan Leaf S is hard to find. Other trims are easier. Thanks. If I am wrong on any of the above, please let me know.

It’s a shame so much work has been put into the suv, the leaf has been kind of forgotten, compared to the id3/4. It feels old , since the suv offers ccs they should have swapped eu and us models as well, we also know a test mule using the 64kw liquid with 4x4 is possible. With zero choice on interior colour in Europe , and hybrid display, door cards from the mk1 and a battery motor setup 5 years out of date, Nissan please update and give a full redesign

As a Tesla driver with CHAdeMO adapter I'd like to see more than one CHAdeMO at EA stations. They can always take the cables out later and convert to CCS when the standard really does die.

Yes that would be great. Also turn the power up too 100kw since the new leaf can take that. The ccs/chademo station can do it since the ccs side is 150 kw it would not be hard to change.

I never see info on Nissan free charging when I watch multiple EV reviews? I just bought my 3rd Leaf. 2015 and 2018 I put 30,000 miles on and never went over one bar past middle for heat range. The 2018 Nissan gave 2 years free EVgo charging. The 2020 I just bought gave me $250 EVgo charge balance on my card. The area I live, San Luis Obispo has multiple free type 2 charging. So for about 3.5 years of Leaf ownership I only paid for charging maybe 3 times! And like mentioned I got $11,000 incentive and will get tax credit for the 2020.

I worry that if the car doesn't have a battery cooling system, the car can potentially catch fire if it gets extremely hot and that is a hazard to the owner. Cooling systems in electric cars must come as standard, otherwise people will not buy into the electric car frenzy

We’re still thinking about one of my wife really likes it but I just think it’s really out of date it’s really too bad because they really had an opportunity when they redesigned the car to do it right become a real competitor with the corona but the range is low to get those battery issues so I believe it’s subpar

what is the charging time? what is the travel distance? I was really interested in buying an electric car but it doesnt make sense. I heard it takes 2 to 4 hours to fully charge the EV. so we are talking around 8 hours to go 250 miles. owners correct me or convince me its efficient to get an electric car. plus it costs about 50 to 60 dollars to fill your gas tank in 5 to 10 minutes, but if it takes hours to charge your EV what are you doing during that time? eating at a restaurant? sleeping in the car? what if there is a line of cars waiting for the charging station. do you get a hotel room?
