I'm writing this as a possible warning to some, if I may say so. Almost exactly 3 years ago after progressing relatively quickly in span of a half year I horribly strived becoming as good as I can in no time, trying to improve more and more, attempting to get first 500pp play and more and more. When I reached my goal of setting 500pp at the end of 2022, I was severly disappointed, because it was 1x miss choke by nervs on last 4 notes on Horrible Kids. Since then I could say I haven't improved even a little bit. I haven't set any another 500pp play at all. It all felt like I was 'mindblocked' on everything that could potentially give me pp or be my top play, or even improve at anything. And I'm certain that's because I really cared too much about, even to this point where I've started to play less, then come back, be visibly worse at the game and guilt trip myself. Certain conclusion is, don't let it get to Your head and plz enjoy game

I struggle from exact same thing. I set my first 600pp in 2021, since then if it wasn’t for csr buffing some of my chokes, i’ve only set one other 600pp and it was recently. And that’s despite playing consistently without a break throughout the past 3-4 years. It’s a mental block and I still can’t fathom setting a 600pp play so I just forget how to play the game the moment i get remotely close setting a score. I don’t lose hope though and you shouldn’t either so long as you’re having fun. Anyway just thought i’d share this since it felt comforting knowing i’m not the only one

@@_rumit I'm sorry for Your struggle 🙏 Even though I haven't necessarily lost hope, these past 3 years painfully showed me, like "it's already the end of the road". I had realized many times that it's pretty much mental issue and with time I got better hang of it, but even though, I feel like it's not worth anymore. Mostly because it's 2nd time something like this has happened, but lasted (and is lasting) much much longer than before. My alongside goal was to learn stream maps which I, now ironically, thought will be easy to improve at, especially since I was 'good' speed player, had a lot of stamina and tapping wasn't too much of a problem. It wasn't long enough when I've started to notice that im becoming worse and worse at streams comparing to when I've started off with playing streams with improvement in mind. And since then I'm barely better at this skillset, and even after all of that I can't even set a good score on easiest farmable stream maps, let alone FC them. (e.g. Sidetracked Day Dendy's mapset, Lionheart, Glory Days etc. etc.)

I feel this, through the first year and a half of me playing, i improved relatively fast and made a decent amount of progress in my skillsets, but then i hit my final year of highschool and i was absolutely hardstuck for another year and a half. I didnt set a single play, let alone crest over 1k playcount in a month. My rank practically stayed the same (and sometimes decreased) over that entire time. I thought it was fully joever for me, but CSR became my saving grace. I knew a lot of my best scores were chokes that were absolutely tragic. In the 2 months after CSR came out, i got not only my first 500, but also my first 600, and i cut my rank down to a quarter of what it was previously. Im not sure what skillset it is you're most comfortable in, or what map style gives you the most confidence in gaining pp, but there's always room to explore, because i dont think its ever too late to throw in the towel. Before csr, i was barely a dt player, let alone high bpm aim. I mostly played nomod consistency and jump farm with hdhr. I definitely adapted to the meta, but there were a lot of steps of finding what i thought was fun to play before even considering pursuing that skillset. I hope one day you can overcome this slump, but always remember, plz enjoy game.

i have also sometimes experienced another thing. i keep retry spamming and can't fc, but then like a week later of not playing the map, i fc (or get a really good run) first try

I experience this alot in osu and when i compare it to other games like geometry dash for example, it happens way sooner than in geometry dash. i could go 4-5 hours of playing an extreme demon and still get better at the level and maybe beat it, but osu is just apparently different. Also nice Videos!

Its so nice to see bubbleman return. I wasnt in the community diring hia prime but ge seems like just perfect creator to watch while i cant play osu. Not crazy good like mrekk, still insane player, giving motivation to play, plays cool maps and shares his story. Great stuff

I did experience this concept when playing osu (probably the reason why I can't still go past my first 400pp barrier), but what's equally fascinating to me is that similar idea applies to mapping. After using the editor for nearly 7 years now I can say that the less you care about the stuff you want to make, it often results in a far better outcome. "I want to map this song so badly" goes hand in hand with "I want to FC this map so badly". Whenever I force myself to map it's almost always worse than if I were to make something on a whim in like 1-2 hours - it took me a long time to understand this and it's far healthier to just go with the flow instead of hyperanalyzing every object you place spending countless hours on it. There were times where I could spend days/months on a single section and could never figure out, or just completely dislike the final outcome. And the moment I decided to go "aight whatever happens happens" that's when it clicked. I think that's an interesting analogy

yes, yes 1000x yes, I will say this at least once a session. At first it's like "I can fc this" then later after a while it becomes "I don't even care anymore I will just take the higher combo pass" and then somehow I randomly do better, it is weird how it works but it does indeed work.

I actually have pretty much always followed the idea of the backwards law (without knowing it exists). In the very few osu tournaments I have played in I only ever really played through the maps once or twice to get a feel for what map is what, and what they are like, never really trying in them to get a good score, same with the tournaments. Its a 50/50 of I either win or I lose, so I may as well treat that as any other play. When it comes to just playing the game, I have always played for fun and only like once or twice do I recollect actually "farming" a score (I retried Guitar to kodoku like at most 10 times in 1 session to get the fc). All the other time I just push skillcap and play what I find fun at the time. I basically only look at pp as the rewards of my score, not the incentive, the incentive being to have fun. Now that doesn't mean I don't get nerves, in fact its my main issue with getting fc's as nerves kick in when I know that I am fc'ing through a song, subconsciously or otherwise. And I know its FC's specifically because I could be on a play that is worth 340+ pp, which would essentially be my new top play, and not be nervous at all if I had missed early in the song before nerves could kick in. (I have a big pp counter that I can see during the play because lazer is awesome) This has gone for many other games that I play in, such as rocket league. I have basically 3000 hours in that game and have played multiple irl tournaments, none of which I got nervous in because I was never really playing to win, but to have fun. I could only get as far as my skills would allow, and pushing skill in the match would only get me nervous and decrease the skill rather than increasing it. So why try and do that for a negative effect? That doesn't mean I wouldn't put in the effort of playing and practicing before, but I wouldn't be doing that for the tournament, I would be doing that to improve myself overall. There is always another tournament to play in. There is always the option to retry and play the map again. There is always another chance. And if there isn't? You can still enjoy the game.

I experience this with my aim in death match vs. Competitive games in first person shooters. Or those games where I feel like everyone is really bad only to realize they are high rank, or games I am doing awful and it turns out everyone is ranked lower than me. The amount of effort and slightly frustrated energy that go into the bad games makes it all the more difficult to play well.

Back when I was still fairly new to osu! I'd have a lot more instances of getting good scores once I stopped caring/or I wasn't really trying to fc. However I noticed that once I got to a higher rank. The more I started "caring" for the scores. Making me choke more and more. Guess I gotta let go.

its so weird that practicing a map over and over again has a negative impact in osu whereas I've found in most games practice does actually make perfect in a specific level or map. I remember when I got mindblocked for the first time while trying to pass a map and it got so bad I thought I was literally going crazy bc I just couldn't do the easiest of sections. I didn't even know what mindblock was at the time.
