I think the biggest problem for me was that the second drop wasn’t advertised as well as the first drop. Which is honestly upsetting, cause Deora 2 once again will be passed on next time for a hype collab. 😢 I just wish the Deora 2 also fixed the windshield for such a different casting. Other than that I still like the overall look. I like the idea behind it. But yeah definitely weird why they chose to drop it like this. And yes my negative $70 hurts 😂

I don't think this collab is directed directly at Hot Wheels fans, but more towards Daniel Arsham fans who also likes his cars and his artwork.

I think Hot Wheels is trying to find their footing in the modern day art and collectible world, which has gotten more and more saturated each year. These collabs make me think the direction they're trying to experiment with is more of an artsy/lifestyle premium brand as opposed to just a toy brand that children and adult collectors enjoy. My personal opinion is that they are trying too hard and they are trying to be too many different things. I'd prefer they stick to their roots in the California custom car scene and roll out series that are "out of the box" but still have continuity and consistency. I'm open to them doing more collabs like this, I just don't think they have it dialed in yet. Good video, Drifter, I agree with pretty much everything you're saying.

Mattel artist collabs for Barbie are very good and thought with great taste. But for Hotwheels and Matchbox (I never liked Ashram's work and the dude seems to be annoying in a human perspective only but Mr brainwash for Mbx is way more annoying and his art not really "his"), Mattel seems to think "Hotwheels collectors are stupids and only collect for the hype of the clout, what is the artist which does really good on instagram and does fancy cars for his art ? This one is doing Porsche, good guys lets contact that dude and his lawyers and let's set a deal, we're gonna milk out those stupid Hotwheels collectors..."

Daniel Arsham is one of the worlds biggest blue-chip artists. Maybe model car lovers will ignore this. But art collectors are the ones who will see this sets true value. I collect Daniel Arshams work. And I know how much these will appreciate in value over the coming years. His work is highly sought after. And these are no different. The creator of this video said they are garbage. He may be educated on toy cars. But is clearly uneducated on who Daniel Arsham is and what his work represents.
@Anth2304 ай бұрын
Many collectors did educate themselves on his artwork. Some people will like it some won't. He uses the same theme/gimmick in almost all his art. EROSION ...Which is fine. But it's not to everyone's taste. I looked at his stuff and would not own any of it. Same with the Hot wheels. It does zero for me. As for appreciating in value??? Most RLC stuff or collabs do. But not as much as they used to. Since these are not numbered I can't see them going up that much. Maybe tripling or quadrupling in the future. But not much more. These are not all that limited. Future value is not enough for me to buy them and many others as well I'm sure...

I think this is an example of two niche worlds overlapping but not meshing, partially due to marketing and partially due to very distinct subcultures. On one hand you have art nerds that liked the Arsham/ikea colab, or that like his sculpting of pop culture artifacts and the other are die hard hotwheels collectors. Daniel Arsham's artwork generally tries to elevate the ubiquitous to the level of cultural artifact almost to the level of Plato's forms. "Imagine the ideal boombox, or PS1 controller, or Carrera RS and I will cast it in concrete or crystal as a monument for all to remember." Yes his work appeals to the hypebeast crowd that collects KAWS, but I like to think there is more to his work than that. I bought one because I like his work, I'm not buying a toy car as an investment or to flip on ebay, but even if it's mass produced it gives me something interesting to contemplate on my desk while working from home. Most of Arsham's work involves decay, or faked antiquity where dated but contemporary cultural icons are put in the same level as ancient Greek sculpture or historical artifacts. I think of the distincly American impact that a time traveling Delorean and Michael Jordan and Pikachu and hotwheels have had on my life, and I end up seeing these as artifacts of a generation's collective psyche, like physical remnants of the original that could never live up to the memory of how cool it seemed at the time. They are artifacts, rendered imperfect and crystalline by time an memory and given form... and I think there is a beauty there..

I didn' realized that the body of the car is in Silkstone, a fancy Mattel word to say "resin casting'. I like Barbie with Silkstone body from the collectors series but in a Hotwheels, that feels wrong even if I do understand that in order to cast the cracks and gap on the Ashram's cars it was the "best" production solution, but I assure you they will feel cheap in hands and the certainly pray hard that buyers will never open the plastic case...

To me, these collaboration cars existed to promote their own branding respectively. Sometimes the car itself is a hit or a miss, even it has mixed reactions in the Hotwheels community. In this case, the collaboration itself is alienating us collectors, because it is a collaboration between Hotwheels and a famous artist that even we don't know exist, except in American art scene. My honest opinion basicly, their idea for collabing with other brand is not a bad idea, but if the brand is not well known to collectors, the car itself would received a mixed reactions in the community. Some will say it is bad, some will say it is good. But for me, it is about the car itself. The cars in Daniel Arsham collections utilize a brand new mold, which replicates an eroded statue (except for Porsche for now). In a way, I think Daniel was only giving the designers a design for how the cars would look like if its eroded, like the Rodger Dodger and the Porsche. In Deora II's case, I think he was inspired by an eroded metal sculpture art, which explains the eroded parts of the Deora, as well as the color of Deora itself. But I don't know, maybe you can agree or disagree with me. Yeah, that's all I want to say about my opinion, and sorry for my lengthy comment.

I see the reply as self-deprecating & philosophical, not unprofessional at all. I have been following Arsham for a few years, I don't think this collab is specifically targeted to diecast collectors but for his collectors. I understand your perspective, but a lot of the pushback you guys have comes from “fear of change”, people are always afraid to adopt a different idea. You guys are used to shiny popular hot wheels. It’s almost a comfort thing. You guys want Porsches, R34s and popular liveries etc. Projects like this are not done to just cater to one type of niche. It’s a blur between his artist fan base and car collectors. If you don’t care for art you will not like this collaboration. You’re buying a piece of history. Also as far as price. You guys have to understand these cars have new castings which costs money that Mattel wants to make sure they make their money back since these won’t get used again. Also they have to pay the artist royalties. This is why collaborations tend to be more expensive. Personally delivery, idea and the unique coloring process to me is worth it. You are buying a unique casting, with unique color coating. I do understand this collaboration is not for everyone, but a lot of the comments are just showing how much you actually understand about this collaboration.

Let me ask, why is it a bad thing to partner up with a company like mattel whos so big to help get your name out there. Thats what marketing is isn't it? Through advertisement, exposure, partnership and etc. Everything that we look at that we think is huge company or well known person, they didn't start big did they? Smart marketing move on Arsham, he became bigger through this collab. HIs art, his name was exposed to a whole new crowd that may not have known him. I didn't know who he is and now i do, checked out some of his art and cool. It would be like someone whos bigger then you on the youtube but like your work and said hey come on my show, You wouldn't? You wouldn't want more followers, more subscribers, more likes on your video to show up higher on searches? collect what you like. thats it, somethings that may not make sense to you can make sense to others.

Art is subjective. You may hate the collab, but others praise it. Arsham has a wide following, and the $70 price point is not for the typical mainline/ car culture collector. The price reflects the artistic value and creativity in itself, extra tooling, and overall packaging and name branding of Arsham, etc. you failed to talk about the Porsche 930 , and the 930A that just came out earlier this week and what they bring it's about time Hot Wheels thinks OUTSIDE the box
