Dick York didn’t just walk away, he had to exit the show do to a previous back injury he had years before and was just too painful to continue doing the show.

I remember wondering why i didnt like Darrin anymore. I was very young and didnt realize that York was gone and Sargent had taken his place. I actually grieved over a loss that I didn't understand. I knew this was not the right Darrin. But, i continued to watch the show and enjoy it. However, never as much when York was Darrin. Rest in Pease , Dick York.

Sergeant was stiff around Elizabeth Montgomery--almost aloof--and not very funny, and this was no doubt due to his homosexuality and his aversion to women. Basically he sucked in the part and it showed.

Rumor has it that Elizabeth Montgomery didn't want to work with him anymore, Bill Asher, Montgomery's husband at the time and show director/producer, basically confirmed this. By this time, Asher and Montgomery were forming 'Ashmont Productions." which basically gave them a piece of the show and essentially casting approval,.

He was treated badly by every cast member except Agnes Moorhead. In an interview, Dick said she was the only person who visited him after he left the show. That entitled, spoiled Elizabeth Montgomery washed her hands of him and eventually abandoned the show and ran away to Europe with one of the show's directors. Her husband had no idea she was having an affair with this man. She was a very gifted actor, but didn't seem to be a very nice person. There is an episode of Password, where she is so rude to one of the contestants. I can only imagine what she was like to work with or be married to.

What I heard in contrast to this Hollywood PR was that Dick York was a gay man. Many Hollywood actors are gay men. Yorks problem according to what I heard was that he was pretty promiscuous with his sex. He would have sex on the Hollywood Lot before starting filming. This all got around to Elizabeth Montgomery who did not appreciate the fact that she had to KISS Darrin during many scenes. She actually could not stand it so she was instrumental in getting him fired. All behind the scenes of course. Hence the Hollywood "bad back" story, which may even had some credibility.
