I think people really underestimate this car. I think it’s aged quite well compared to the EP3, especially as it’s in line more with the FK2/8. It’s got a traditional playable 6 speed manual, yeah it has no torque but that’s the joy of taking it to nearly 9000rpm. For the bang for your buck it’s a smashing piece of kit that handles very well, sounds lovely and fun to drive. Parts aren’t that expensive and the beauty is with normal maintenance that engine will do stupid RPMs well past 150,000 miles. In an era of forced induction and touch sensitive buttons there’s something old school about it.

Clarksons an idiot. He tests cars on a circuit where as very few people will be razzing the car to that level. I suppose that one gripe he had did hold water where the FN was heavier than the EP3 and only had 1 extra bhp. Trouble was that because the car was heavier, if Honda has rectified that then the under steer would’ve been more pronounced. I love the FN. I think it was a huge ‘every day’ improvement on the EP3 and hope to get a good one very soon. I agree with James May actually. When you tune a car for the track, it’s only really good on the track and living with it in every day driving does become a bit of a chore. The FN is by far my favourite type R. Everything before it was too basic, everything after it was just too much. My ex wife described the FK as the Honda Civic ‘Mostly Spoilers’ and she was in no way wrong.

@mojosabien and ironically the EP3 he was bigging up over it was actually slower around the Nurburgring than the FN2 anyway and it was the same story with the TG lap times if you Google them.

I've had 2 EP3's over a timespan of 7 years. And I have had my fn2 for almost 2 years now. I think the rear beam isn't notticable on a daily ride even if you like to trash it from time to time. It's such a stable, direct and planted car I just don't get where all the hate is coming from. It's like honda managed to create a well balanced car despite the rear beam. Also when I had my EP3's I would always feel the need to once again own a more modern car for daily driving. Since owning my fn2 I've never felt the need to look at other cars because it does everything so well and it's actually a nice place to be in. Even my Co worker didn't want to believe how old it is until I showed him the paperwork and he drives audis..that says it all. :) Fn2 is so underrated, for me it's my best car I've owned up till now and I've owned about 15 including 2x ep3, Nissan 200sx, BMW 3, Audi A4, Audi S1, Citroën c5, Mazda mx5, etc..

I completely agree... Something I didn't add to the video and possibly should have is just how much more liveable the FN2 is. Dual zone climate, auto wipers/mirrors, cruise control and so on. My old EP3 was spartan in comparison. Daily dare I say the FN2 is the better car. Thanks for commenting.

I've had my FN2 for just over a month now and really like it. The roads around me are fairly poor, so I do find short trips pootling around town can be a bit irritating with those extremely stiff springs as you say, but I forget all of that when exiting a roundabout and keeping it in 3rd. The 5,500rpm VTEC level might be a little high but thankfully the engine seems to take it in stride. Only one major issue so far is the bloody undertray has come off and is scraping lol

I still have my 2008 FN2 as my daily drive. Type R GT with Satnav! Engine is bullet proof. Gear box is still flawless for me despite hearing about all the 3rd gear issues. With many years spent in Scotland itself the underside is now fairy corroded and I have the infamous blistering along the top seam of the windscreen. Many of the heatshields around the vehicle have long since rusted through and been taken (fallen) off. I consider it as saving weight. I love it to bits but it needs some TLC that I just don't have the time (or money) to give it any more. With around 112k on it's clock its still a champion with so much more life in it. I'll be sad to see it go, but it looks more and more like im going to have to sell it. Any advice out there where the best place to list a Type R GT with GPS?

I absolutely love these, I nearly bought a very low mileage mugen 200 version, but it’s just too slow for me. I landed on the fk2 and remapped it, it’s an animal at 370bhp. There’s still a part of me that misses the true vtec noise. The rear torsion beam is no problem at all, some of the best handling hot hatches have them and unless you’re a regular track user and are going to push the car to its limits you’ll never notice the difference. You’re welcome to try mine.

Although the swift handles lovely, its gutless and even reving out to 7000rpm in 2nd and 3rd, it couldn't drop my 2010 Ford Galaxy 2.0 TDCI!! The first week I was waiting for the gearbox problem to raise its head but no…. 1500 miles in and I’ve had no problems. I’ve had to change the drop links and a bottom arm but they were advised on last mot anyway. Fitted a pipercross induction kit is ain’t no way laying out for the HKS bath sponge.

£3709 at auction. Took a big gamble but this one paid off. Wish I’d have discovered the K20 20 years ago. Would have saved me a huge ball ache with fords and VWs. FN2 prices seem to be flying up since I purchased it probably due to the fact that the FN2 is ulez exempt and the ulez expansion. This has hit values on the “superior” ep3 and raised values on the FN2. Sometimes you just get lucky.

As long as you drive like my grandma, that maybe true, but the rear suspension feels horrible if you drive fast in corners, especially with "load change" (don't know if thats understandable) while cornering. It just feels unsafe and it's annoying when you KNOW the car could go faster around corners, if it had better suspension.

No mods, but just the looks, like that 'bra' (sorry, they call it this way). Mine is from 2008 and has 186.000 Km's on it and it purrs like new. I even bought a second gearbox, to place a LSD one time. I know there are some synchro's issues with the gearboxes, but they all Work with a little 'handicap'. My clutch is heavy and going to be replaced. I am just so happy and the sound, is awesome. Have to say, one of the best video's made about it. Always laugh about the moaning about the torsion beam rear suspension (mostly luddites). Most French hatchbacks have always used this setup, and in my experience of driving one of these, rear grip was never ever a problem.

You've had multiples of these? You've got good taste! 😊 Everyone was slagging these off for not being turbocharged in period, but it is a nice unique point nowadays IMO. They are perhaps not as thrilling to drive as a Clio RS 197 or 200 (incidentally the Clio with more of a longer stroke, torquey engine) but the practicality and space of the Civic makes it a nice package IMO. I found that fitting wider wheels on the front and setting higher tyre pressures in the rear helped to eliminate the factory 'plough understeer' without needing to resort to mechanical changes to the car. Otherwise the stock damping itself is pretty good and keeps the body of the car pretty well controlled IMO. 🙂

Thanks for the informed comment! More of this would be great 😁 I am very keen to try a 197 or 200, even more so since you recon they’re a bit more thrilling. What’s your thoughts on the standard spring rates on these? Am I just being an old man or could they do with being a little softened? I’ve had a few messages saying the eibach progressive springs help this.
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo Жыл бұрын
@@ScottishCarClan I haven't driven a Clio sorry 😟, I'm just going by general opinion and the Best Motoring race where the Clio easily runs away from the FN2 for that, lol. Anyhow, I agree that the standard ride is a little bit too hard so I run 17" wheels which takes the edge off the ride for me. I see you have Eagle F1 tyres on the car, so probably don't want to change the wheels out. Those Eibach 15mm progressive springs sound promising, I don't know much about them, sorry. In the shed, I have a set of spare Tein S-Tech springs (never fitted) which are supposedly harder rates than stock and tighten up the handling. If you did consider changing the wheels, I run 17x8.5 up front, 17x8 in the back (I lucked into a set of RX7 Spirit R rims! 😆Mazda fans will be cross with me, lol), with 225 all round like stock (now 45 profile) but the front contact patch is noticeably wider. 17x9 front, 17x8 rear would be ideal I think, that way you could go up to a 245/40 R17 front tyre. Something like stock Accord wheels, 17x7.5, would work too sticking with 225s, or DC5/EP3 wheels but they are only 17x7.

Hey man got a quick question for anyone really, just getting into Honda's and looking at buying my first honda type r gt fn2 and seen one the other day. The dealer was straight up about it and said before hand it needs alot of TLC to get in shape so some thing I seen are rust in wheel arches with some small rust holes bottom right/left, calipers and discs rusty and rust along the top window seal (it's an 07 model 100k miles) and some rust on that actual bonnet on the underside around where it locks with a couple of dents/chips/scratches. The guy mentioned he will fix it all if I wanted the car so he has a body paint guy working on it atm, would you guys say it's worth buying if the dealer properly sorts everything? thanks!
@ScottishCarClan
@ScottishCarClan Жыл бұрын
Hey! I’d be cautious as everything you’ve mentioned there is cosmetic / surface level. How about the underside of it? The sills and rear beam as well as the chassis in general are bad for rotting. Have a look at the mot history for it too for a better overall picture. If you search our channel we have an fn2 buyers guide highlighting all the points to check that may be helpful for you

@@ScottishCarClan hey thanks for the reply! The last few MOTS have been good and I did ask him to send me pictures of all the wheel arches and underside when the protective cover is off before any work is done and more pictures after the work is done so I can see how it looks. I'll definitely ask about the back axel aswell and check the sills! If all looks good after the repairs then should be good to go do you think? Garage gives a 6 month warranty aswell and the engine sounds fine, they also mentioned the gearbox is smooth no crunching etc aswell.

I've driven the ep3 and fn2 and even without rear independent suspension the fn2 corners so much better. The ep3 is to playfull, the fn2 really grips and gives you much more feedback, the chassis is something that isn't on the specsheet but it's much more important than the suspension, especially in this car. Would it be better with independent suspension? Yes probably but it's already alot better than the ep3 so it's still a step up. Don't listen to Clarkson to much and drive one if you have the chance

The thing with these is that the stats boys didn't like them. Would you notice the torsion beam rear on the road? No you wouldn't. The 1bph increase again, bad on paper but jump out of an ep3 into an fn2 and the difference is noticeable. Personally I went for an imported Dc5 but as a more grown up and usable everyday car the FN2 is a corker. Especially for the money these days.
