Sadly, Puerto Rico is a colony & it should be part of Spain just like Aruba, Curaçao, and others they are first world provinces of the Dutch. Puertoricans never wanted to be U.S. citizens it was imposed upon them. To this day the U.S. government is against the people of Puerto Rico, they are now protesting cause of a curry or governor who was installed by the federal government. Puerto Rico is poorly treated by our government, it should not become a state Spanish would no longer be spoken as well as losing its cultural identity.

It has its good and its bad becoming a US Citizen. Some other poor Latin Amer countries would of wished to have become a US citizen.
@itzamia3 жыл бұрын
Spain didn't care about their colonies either. Even if Puerto Rico became a state they would still speak Spanish there. The downfall of the language has more to do with more youth living in the U.S. that speak English more so over Spanish and may choose to understand English rather than learn Spanish if it becomes less and less spoken in the household.

Hey Columbus discover PR in his first try not on his second after the second he passed in the Dominican Republic so he never discovered America at all. Second Caparra still exists and still has his name. Caparra was used as the Capitol not renamed. Another thing is that the Taino name is Boriken not Borinquen which is the Spaniard (Spanish) way to say it and why they name it Puerto Rico? I don't know put we should ask the residents of the city of Puerto Rico in Spain to see what they think lol. Other than that my island may have flaws just like any other place in the world but is my island PUÑETA!!!! Donde estan los BORICUAS griten Weeepa!!!

We truly are blessed that were born American citizens. I have many hispanic friends that them and their families have struggled and even lost their lives in search for a better life in the U.S. I truly feel for them as I also understand the Americans that get so upset at illegal immigration. It's a vicious circle. A dangerous one at that. I served my country in the Army and I get it. I wish our world wasn't full of hatred, greed, and selfishness. But I have faith that we can ALL change for the better! God bless ALL OF YOU. even if you hate me or dislike me for being what I am.

Original name was San Juan Bautista, Caparra (the oldest continuous European Settlement in US territory) was funded by De Leon, but due for the mosquito infested area and the hardship to find potable water the capitol was moved to Puerto Rico, now Old San Juan. The lamb in Puerto Rico state seal represents San Juan the Baptist. The name was switched later on to San Juan the capital and Puerto Rico the Island.

Also - why couldn't you have had a Spanish speaking actor (even one who spoke it as a second language) to do this? This actor mispronounces many Spanish words. And as others have said, Puerto Rico means rich port, not rich coast (that is Costa Rica). It's a shame that this is produced by the HISTORY channel, a medium whose job it is to get all of this right.

This short video has several mistakes. I'm Puerto Rican, and I'm proud of my heritage. One of the many mistakes which made me cringe was when he avoided to say that the U.S. invaded Puerto Rico and Cuba. This is the truth, Cuba wanted to separate from Spain in the late 1800s however Puerto Rico did not. In fact in the year 1897 Spain gave Puerto Rico "La carta autonomica" to make Puerto Rico an overseas province (autonomy) of Spain. Spain and Puerto Rico share a history of a little over 400 years which is far longer than the U.S. has been an independent country. The Philippines adopted English however Puerto Ricans did not because of our Spanish roots and loyalty. To this day we are proud of our Spanish language, culture, traditions, and music. I'm a member of a reunification movement seeking to reunify Puerto Rico with Spain as a sovereign nation member of the European union. The U.S. as a whole doesn't care if the Spanish language is preserved in Puerto Rico, with Spain however Spanish will be preserved forever. Besides, it's far more glorious to be a member of the European union and to be considered Europeans than MacDonald's eating dumb Americans. As far as I'm concerned I don't recognize the affiliation that the U.S. has with Puerto Rico. In my mind and heart I'm a Spaniard because I'm from Puerto Rico which is a Spanish island of Spain.

Im still confused. What does the U.S want from us, from PR, by leaving us in a undefined limbo? The the U.S is the guilty of our economic misery. If people could see the true colors of US government relationship in PR, everyone would see the main problem of the economy of PR. That is something that PR talks about every day, but it is dificult to English speakers to understand that; A doble problem.

If your "employee" doesn't come to you for a salary raise, why then should you care about giving him a raise? If you don't organize and march and demand action Congress won't move a finger for you! Your "limbo" is equal to the inaction of the people of PR.
