One mistake: Taínos didn't settle the island 1000 years before the spaniards, it was other inhabitants that migrated from south america and perhaps florida and central america. Taínos, much like the spaniards, arrived relatively recent (just about 400 years before the arrival of Columbus).

the flag was prohibited by the GAG law 53 of 1948 to avoid any independent movement to write or speak for Independence to US. that's why people is very sentimental about their flag.

When Puerto Rico was Spanish in late 1800s, it had representation in the Spanish Parliament, a Statute of Autonomy, and slavery was abolished. Puerto Rico never asked for its independence nor was it ever proclaimed. Currently Puerto Rico does not have representation in the US Congress or Senate, they do not have the right to vote to elect the President of the country, and their economy is hampered by laws that favor the United States, making Puerto Rico a colony and America its metropolis.
