Edit: Thank you to everyone for the feedback on this video! There have been some great comments made about watches I did not know existed like the Bell & Ross Hydromax and others when it comes to depth ratings (as well as standouts that come to mind like the Seiko Tuna and Sinn UX) At this point I’ve made about 3 videos on the channel about the Rivalry between the Rolex & Omega and the prototypes they used (didn’t really want to repeat myself and talk about Omega's “Five Deeps Expedition” again) Omega has the record when it comes to prototypes, as far as production models go Rolex has created a piece that travels down further than Omega’s 6km production model. Is it necessary? Of course not. I feel that Omega had a better approach of making a more “wearable” version of a deep diver (something I omitted from the video) Personally I prefer the design of the Ultra Deep (something else I omitted) BUT all that said, this is merely a *depth measuring competition between the two brands 😉 Reaching "Full Ocean Depth" - this result from Rolex is spectacular. No matter the brand name, this is one of those rare lifetime achievements that cannot be overstated. They smashed it out of the park with this one 🥃 (Titanium is 30% less heavier than steel - so 1/3rd lighter)

As a retired Green Beret with combat dive certification that still wears my 1982 Sub 16800 that I wore all through the army, I found this super interesting. My first thought was this was a bit over the top but as I listened to you, it makes complete sense. As I'm not a saturation diver as your friend & have no need for it's specs, I still want it. As for the people who are knocking the watch, lets face it they are Rolex hater's that don't understand the brand. As it may look a bit pedestrian to some, the devil is in the details. The grade 5 titanium is a big deal, the no date & mat dial are simply awesome, a no nonsense instrument indeed. I have no doubt they could construct it without the HE valve but I like the historical tie & it serves as a nice way to break up the mass of the case. I guess some just arn't open minded enough to consider it's merits even if it's not their cup of tea but I bet they'll sell everyone they can build, I will be calling my dealer tomorrow.

Good comment (so good you were selected for a giveaway I see!!). I'm simply jumping in to agree with you re. the stupidity of the "evidence that Rolex has lost its way" type comments re. this release. No. IMO the gloss dialled/bezelled flashiness of much of today's Rolex catalogue is better evidence of that - if you are truly looking at the brands ethos for the vast majority of its history.

1 went to my AD and was able to put on my wrist the 2023 Rolex Challenger Deep 50mm. It is insanely huge! I have a 2022 Rolex SD/DS 126660 44mm an it is perfect for my wrist. I'm a 6'2ft 240lbs athlete. The SD/DS 44mm is definitely an active man's watch. The 50mm Rolex Deep Sea Challenge and it dwarfs my 136660 44mm SD/DS. Spot on! For a watch to be able to deal with this level of pressure and still be wearable is remarkable engineering. This is a frontier of huge significance to any diver, oceanographer or enthusiast. It's a huge, ungainly beast that I'll probably never wear, but I'm so glad it exists and I have renewed respect for Rolex for making it. As for 'where now?' Well, someone could make the tech slimmer, but I doubt it's possible without entailing excessive cost. I hope this paves the way for a new Sea-Dweller - a pure tool, ti diver.

You only have to look at the popularity of the Explorer, where many think it was the first watch on Everest's summit - it wasn't, that was a Smiths watch, but Rolex have the marketing nouse and budget to change the perception. Also in many cases the first to do something is great however quite often in engineering a competitor will learn from the episode and produce a rival that has features or design to address the former's issues..... As a piece of engineering it really is a great achievement, you would have no worries if it fell off your wrist into the Mariana Trench, the watch would survive. If you just happen to have a deep sea sub at your disposal you could pop down and get it back maybe as long as some unknown deep sea being hasn't beaten you to it. But that isn't the point of this watch. As a production item it is incredible. Why did Rolex make this watch? Because they can and should be applauded. What next? I dunno but I'd guess some one just might produce a GMT version as I guess a Chronograph with its pushers is probably a week point for water ingress. Well done Rolex.

Compression resistance and expansion resistance are not even close to similar. When the watch is compressed, the ring keeps the watch from collapsing. When the watch is expanded, the screw threads are all that keep the watch together. Screw threads will fail well before a solid metal ring. The only way you can keep a watch from exploding, is to keep pressure from accumulating over the course of time. For that you need to seal a watch to the extent that even the smallest gas molecules (He) can't pass the barriers. You can't do that with rubber o-rings. You'll need metal gaskets.

Thanks for the video! I think this watch serves several purposes for Rolex: 1. It reminds everyone that Rolex is a technical brand and not just a luxury one. 2. It’s not a watch to wear, it’s a tool watch to admire as a technological marvel. 3. It makes a point to differentiate itself from Tudor: - Pelagos 39 : Grade 2 Titanium, lifestyle - Rolex Deep sea: Grade 5 titanium, professional You admire this watch not for the money it represents but for its technological achievement. Rolex going back to its core value.

As with halo and/or hypercars it's the trickle down effect that's potentially significant. It's because of Tesla and Rimac that regular mid-sized family SUVs can now comfortably do 0-100 times that used to be sports car exclusive. I'm not entirely sure what could trickle down from the nostrils of this freaking beast that we as normal watch guys could benefit from, but hey, I thought my analogy read as somewhat sophisticated anyway. 😅

This watch has a Rolex DNA that goes all the way back to the 1953s Sub. Evolutionary chain is now complete Sub -> Sea Dweller -> Deep Sea -> Deep Sea Challenge. Each new model is built on the foundation of the predecessor. Hence the so familiar and maybe even ubiquitous looks and tech. What’s interesting is the use of Titanium. Is Titanium Stainless Steel of the XXIst century? A material for true modern tool watches. Tudor released all Pelagos watches in Titanium. Now Rolex starts with the Deep Sea Challenge.

I think it is obvious that Omega chose to make a more reasonable size and wearable version of the experimental watches. The experimental models actually went to the deepest point as opposed to just being tested. This is a cool factor. If they wanted to release this version, I believe it was the same size. This is just physics of dealing with the immense pressure. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should is likely the Omega approach on the Ultra Deep 6000M.

I love the fact that the Rolex fanboys are rushing around saying that this is the deepest dive Watch of them all and beats the Omega Ultra Deep. Well, Omega still have the record for the Watch that can go deepest. Granted it is not commercially available but, the record still stands at 15,000m with the Ultra Deep prototype FOD-X1. Not 11,000 that the Rolex can go to. Well, at least Rolex fanboys will now hopefully start to appreciate what a great material Titanium is when used to build Watches. But this watch has never actually travelled to its rated depth. Omega still hold the world depth record a few metres more than Rolex achieved with James Cameron. A strong bid by Rolex to outdo Omega for sure. But I'm not sure its a game changer to have a watch that says it can go somewhere it has in fact never been, and where no-one in their right mind ever actually intends to go. Obviously the engineering is impressive and may, or may not, yield technologies that can be applied to lesser watches. Personally I'd still take it off when I'm doing the washing up, so it wouldn't really be a game changer for me 🤷‍♂

Rolex- really now - The Rolex product marketing has shot the buck and actually launched a watch that no watch fan needs. Rolex has maintained for many decades with only marginal changes in the existing model range. Some people will want to call this the maintenance of tradition, others as a lack of innovation. Now the change Bigger (50mm) Lighter and Deeper is announced. Already the DEEPSEE James Cameron, was not comfortable to carry because of its weight, but the swapping was made much easier and so one could calmly do without the one or other lead weights. Also, James Cameron is now too old for deep diving and can't even read the date at 11,000m, should he ever get the date for the dive wrong. Titanium Grade 5 saves 30% weight, but does not justify the totally exaggerated price of about 25.000 EURO. It can't be because of the used titanium KG- price of just 45 EURO. The currently used 904L steel costs even less. Why Rolex used such a small dial for the Challenge in relation to the 50 mm case is a mystery. I already didn't understand with the DEEPSEE, why Rolex wasted valuable space on the dial. The senseless engraved lettering "ORIGINAL GAS ESCAPE VALVE" and "RING LOOK SYSTEM" could have been saved by Rolex this time. Every watch fan knows that it is not possible without a helium valve and that it is visible on the case anyway. Anticipating this, Rolex has already engraved "Marina Tresch" in the caseback. I prefer to stay with my only true Rolex SEADWELLER 126600.

Of course the haters cannot stop hating 🙄. It is an amazing piece of engineering. Omega's version is 5mm smaller in diameter, but with Rolex's has twice the WR. Both watches are quite difficult to wear due to their dimensions, but it is amazing to see this level of engineering.

Omega outclassed the Deep-sea with a watch comparable in size whereas Rolex produced a dinner plate to beat Omega. The Rolex is not only 50mm but 23.5mm. The Omega is 45mm by 18.1 and the OG Deep-sea is 44mm by 17.7mm. The Rolex is far bigger watch and less wearable than the Omega.
@hugohernandez3651
@hugohernandez3651 Жыл бұрын
@@almac9203 The Rolex is 5mm bigger in diameter indeed, but 5K higher WR. Not even close. That is where the magic of the engineering is. I have a Planet Ocean. 43.5mm 600WR. A very thick watch as well. My Deepsea JCE is 44mm, but with more than 5X the WR. No Helium valve required btw. Eventually Omega had to produce a real contender. @@hugohernandez3651 where is the engineering when omega outclassed the Deepsea with the Ultra Deep that is barely bigger? Compare the dimensions of the OG Deepsea and Ultra Deep and you will see that the Ultra Deep goes over 50 percent deeper whilst barely bigger. The Rolex challenge isn't just slightly bigger but laughably bigger. 50mm by 23.5mm is not close to the Omega in dimensions. The Rolex isn't just wider but look at how thick that is. It is basically a dinner plate.
@almac9203
@almac9203 Жыл бұрын
@@hugohernandez3651 the ploprof dimensions are actually misleading. If you try one on it wears far more comfortably than the dimensions would indicate. It is a quirky design so it is difficult to compare to more conventional designs. I think the amazing engineering task is how superior the Ultra Deep is to the Deepsea without resorting to just supersizing the watch. That is engineering. Anyone can make a hockey Puck sized watch.

Who is this for? Since real divers don't wear mechanical watches, is this like building an Apollo lunar module for a NASA program that no longer exists to use it? I'm guessing the Deepsea is for the man who seemingly has everything and wants one more thing. Going back to the design, are its hands like pencil-thin legs on a bodybuilder's massive torso? And would you want the 'challenge' callout braggadocio on the rehaut or for the wearer alone on the caseback?
