At 54 my first HD. I wouldn’t have picked a HD except for this bike. So far I love it and am getting lots of unsolicited compliments on it. I wanted a cruiser light tour capable bike not a heavy touring bike with big fixed faring trunk etc. And not strictly a bar hopper either. This bike runs strong has weight & suspension for smooth confident ride yet is nimble and handles well thanks to the new M8 motor inverted forks and 2018+ softail design. And Thanks to technology has excellent braking as well. I like the combination of classic cruiser looks and modern design & tech specifically keyless ignition, ABS, cruise control, phone charger as I handlebar mount my phone for GPS directions etc. quick adjust shock for two up riding, day maker headlight and modern light weight wheels. I like the quick detach bikini fairing and saddlebags to go from light bagger with room for jacket gloves night glasses half helmets etc to bar hopper once you reach your destination. No tools required this takes one minute. Arrive at say Daytona drop your gear at hotel and cruise bike week on a naked bike. All of which made it a better choice for me than the rest of the softail line. I don’t know why MoCo doesn’t offer a practical windshield for it but Gustafsson makes a full line of windshields specifically for this fairing which are excellent. It was my first upgrade. Also HD didn’t include handles so the saddlebags could be used as luggage when traveling. Lol I got to the Hotel & went WTF. My next upgrades were stage 3, SE ventilator with Fuel Moto upgrade for superior inhale, S&S warranty compliant exhaust for superior sound & exhale, then the HD pro street tuner all for a dramatic performance upgrade while retaining full warranty. Only 2k miles yet but looking forward to spring.

GenZ Biker Where are you located? I’m a life long hot rodder but no longer a young white knuckler. The stage 3 has more low end torque than stock and way more top end HP. The stage 4 has additional top end HP but at the expense of low end torque. So stage 4 wasn’t what I wanted as a daily rider and for a cruiser. The other thing I found was that the 6 speed doesn’t have an overdrive. Another WTF as this dramatically limits how you can gear your bike for both say 1/4 mile acceleration AND higher speed cruising / cruising economy. (65 to 85) When is the last non overdrive transmission CAR you can remember? Worse since 07 HD has raised the final drive ratio from as low as 3.31 to now 2.79. This kills the acceleration rate for lowered emissions and some highway economy. Read to please our now overpowered & overbearing government. Big twins can somewhat get away with doing this because of the low rpm big torque to weight. But if you are an enthusiast & practical rider screw that. People spend big for more power and leave half the goods on the table so to speak in the form of poor gearing. Horsepower & weight are not the only reasons sport bikes are so much quicker & faster. Gearing is the third leg of a 3 leg stool. Stock gearing is 32 tooth sprocket with 66 tooth pulley. Again 2.79 final drive ratio. I took a 30 tooth sprocket for a new M8 powered Trike and had it machined down to fit the original softail gear width and swapped it in then swapped in a 70 tooth pulley. This brought the final drive ratio back down (up numerically) to 3.15. An ideal compromise final drive ratio (1 to 1) for both again 1/4 mile acceleration and highway cruising. In fact while it lowers your theoretical top speed it likely raises your actual top speed especially with more power & rpm range from a cam and tune etc. Peak torque is optimum fuel efficiency TO POWER MADE for top gear cruising. Stock cam peak torque is 3,000 rpms stage 3 cam 3,500. At 3.15 final drive ratio 80 mph is 3,300. Either cam is comfortable responsive & even relatively fuel efficient at this speed with this gearing. But the stage 3 already makes dramatically more torque at 3k let alone 33 or 3,500. Stock gearing would provide slightly better fuel economy here but at the cost of being slow to accelerate. I’ll take the dramatically stronger better running and better accelerating bike in exchange for a slightly less fuel thrifty geared highway ride any day.

Vern Lochtefeld Hey Vern, I totally agree! The bike work excellent for us borne in the sixties as well, I’ve had mine for over a year now and it’s now hibernating in the garage to be ready and hungry for the spring! I find it amazing that so many of these so called bike reviewers want to change everything between the front and rear wheel. I’d say, change the rider instead.....

Great video!! I love the sport glide. So, my question is... is a sport glide a decent beginner bike? I know that some ppl say “buy something you can ‘handle’ and then step up once you have experience”, while others say “buy what you want, because with the proper respect for the power of the machine and the proper technique, education, training and PRACTICE, you can grow into the bike.” What’s your opinion about a brand new rider buying a SportGlide? Thanks!!

I bought mine last year as a bike which both myself and my wife can enjoy. With a Sundowner saddle and sissy bar it is perfect for us. I have added a few other things like a Reinhart slip on silencer and a couple of trim options to make it mine. People keep on about it only having the 107 motor but it has plenty of power for everyday riding two up or on my own. It handles very well and stops well enough, (although not a sports bike). It is smooth and economical to run and I love it.

Yes, I really like my 2018 SG with a Sergeant seat, Memphis Shades windscreen, floor boards, a slip on exhaust, and I have the Tour Pak. Its a great bike, more than enough power, and flicks easily in commuting traffic. Sales are poor in the US but a little better in Europe and rumors are H-D will discontinue the SG in 2021 in favor of a 1250cc replacement. The problem is the price, $18,500 base up to $20,000 with custom paint is way, way over priced compared to the competition. This is really a $15,000 bike especially compared with the Low RIder S 114 at $17,500. I now see used 2018's under $15,000 and that's the way to go if you really want an SG otherwise there are much better options. I'm waiting to see what H-D does with the 1250 and 975 engines and my next bike will be water cooled.

Bruh money is still a big factor in bringing in young riders. I bought a lowrider but damn sure think many times if I spent too much. I probably did. Just thankful for saving up and having that job to pay for it. No job anymore and makes me think with a different perspective. Sportster is the best platform to capitalize on and bring in young riders. Still, it needs some changes. Throw on saddlebags should provide enough storage. A light, torquey hooligan style bike at a cheaper price point is the best bet for attracting millennials and gen z. Must be a great bike but look at that price tag. Not to mention shit interest rates from harley finance despite having top tier credit.

I don’t disagree at all, H-D is a business at the end of the day. Where I have a problem is that H-D has done very little to promote the Sport Glide. I was at the International Motorcycle Show in Dallas last Saturday and found that they had no Sport Glides, the Harley rep didn’t even know they didn’t have one. When I asked about it, he shrugged and gave me a smart ass response. Bottom line, you don’t promote, you don’t sell.

Good Point Royce. HD as a company is in a uncomfortable position these days. Demographics and debt is a real concern. Their stock has dropped approximately 40% during the past five years, while the DOW has gained at nearly record levels.

Didn’t realize that the H-D had dropped that much Mychael! That’s pretty damning in light of how well the economy’s doing. While I realize that H-D is considered to be a premium brand, they seem to be going in the exact opposite direction of where they say they want to be - adding several million new customers over the next several years. The new Softails have been generally well received, but very few of the more established customers like the new concept bikes. Thanks for the additional info.

GT6SuzukaTimeTrials Do some research on generations; according to PEW research the “millennial” generation started in 1981 and goes up until ‘96. While the later few millennials probably can’t afford a Harley. A good majority should be able to being that the early millennials are now in their mid 30’s. Also, keep in mind you can find used sport glides for around $14k. Now genZ’ers like myself definitely can’t afford that though. The generational debate is a common misconception. Many are ignorant to the truth and the ones that bash on millennials usually are themselves haha! Anyways thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video.
