@Joye J : Yes, they got a serious bruise from that Diesel emmission scandal. Too bad, that basically killed the Diesel engine for passenger cars, althought Diesel can provide the lowest co2 emmision due to higher efficiency of the thermodynamic cycle (50% compared to 40% of the spark ignited engines). Removal of NOx is not a problem with current technology.

Toyota intentionally does not push the limits of performance, when they could do that. They looking for dependable transportation at an affordable cost. The use the same materials that Ford or Chevy. In some cases the parts used in Toyotas are from the same sources as those used by Ford and Chevy. They do better at evaluating the total process from design, to procurement to assembly, for the intended buyer.

Toyota: "Don't accept inferior quality from the previous process, don't make rejects in one's product, and if a reject has been produced, don't knowingly send it to the next process." This is quite different from the American style, the bosses only care about hitting the production numbers (their bonuses and evaluations depend on it). That's what we have final assembly QA and repair for. If they are too busy, just ship it to the customer. That's what warranties are for.

I totally agree! And I grew up in Detroit and all my family works for the US car companies. Ironically I was a loyal US car buyer until I went into a Chevy dealer to purchase a Caprice Classic. The dealer showed me a Geo Prizm and a Geo Metro. I bought both for less than the price of the Caprice. The Geo Metro I put 100k miles on it before I sold it. The Geo Prizm (which I found out after I owned it for awhile was actually a Toyota Corolla) I ended up putting 250k on it before giving it to my son. He put another 100k on it and gave it to a friend. Ever since then I’ve bought nothing but Toyotas and have never had a problem with them. I bought a new 2004 Corolla and put 330k trouble free miles on it before giving it to a friend who put another 30k on it before the timing belt broke. Got a 2013 FJ Cruiser and love it!

Granted hybrid four banger are more complex but they are well made. With TRD performance, TRD accessories, and TRD ground effect kits, wheels, and good tires, they are well made vehicles.
