I agree with basically all of this except one point: Age gaps. I think when you are shipping two adult characters an age gap is totally fine because adults are able to consent. I think IRL age gaps between adults can have issues and implications, especially if one of the people is in their early twenties; however, shipping a thirty year old with a fifty year old? It may not be to someones taste, but that's kind of irrelevant. If your age gap is between a minor and an adult than obviously that's a real issue, but I've been in fandoms where fans get upset and call a ship 'problematic' or 'toxic' because a character who is canonically forty is sometimes shipped with a man who is seventy. Their relationship in the show is that of close friends anyway. It's just not really a big deal, imo.

I didn't know she was dating my stepfather for a long time as I never saw them kiss or hug, or do anything you might associate with two people in a romantic relationship. But the makers of fanfics, the makers of fanart, the makers of pornography.. they aren't making their content specifically to educate the youth on how the world works. We can't get rid of every problematic thing in media/entertainment, we just can't. Like it's even being said in this very video about My little pony. I get humanizing him to an extent, purely for character exploration, but I would never do that to something non-fictional. In fiction, exploring those kind of topics can be interesting, and showing the not-so-great things from a CHARACTER's point of view, as opposed to the omniscient view, could allow for that kind of thinking, because it's a character and characters have bias that may be very, very flawed and wrong. Exploring that can be interesting if done right, but doing something similar IRL wouldn't be acceptable for obvious reasons. Some fans may be 'de-villanizing' JD for that reason, which I think is acceptable, but others are definitely humanizing them from their NON-FICTIONAL point of view, and that's a real problem. With them, it's like how people romanticize IRL people who've done terrible things, because they've brought JD's experience into the real world and are trying to paint him as 'just depressed' or whatever they paint him as to push aside the fact that he FICTIONALLY killed three people and tried to blow up a school. Obviously, people dont kill other people because they're depressed, or because they've lost their mother, or had a shitty home life, and by using those as an excuse for killing someone IRL with JD as a stand in, you're both insinuating that 'all it takes for someone to tip over the end and commit genocide' is just experiencing loss or being depressed or having an awful family. Those factors CAN play in to why someone would do something so horrible, but it's practically never the ONLY reason, at least not IRL (and not in good fiction). You're also undermining the severity of the mental state of someone who can do those kind of things, and while depression, grief, and shitty friends/family are NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING to undermine at ALL, that's not what causes these people do to do these things, not on their own. Everybody has some issues, and not everybody is a murderer. That's the issue here. People are normalizing terrible things like murder. I wouldn't know, I don't have any experience with why people murder other people. I'm not a psychologist or whoever would know why, that's just what I believe and it may be incorrect. Anyway, sorry for the wall of text lol.

my hot take: just like anything on the internet, you gotta curate your own fandom experience. obviously sometimes toxicity can seep into every corner of an online community and it's just inescapable, but surprisingly often, you can stay in your own little wholesome bubble for even the most toxic of fandoms. being in a fandom slightly past its prime -- when the main shit stirrers have moved on to the next big thing, but more chill, low key people have stayed, can be nice as well (not saying this is a universal rule -- I've just noticed that toxicity seems to recede in fandoms that have gone past their peak of popularity)

Maybe a little too late but... here's a thing I want to mention as someone who grew up as a fandom fangirl and fanfiction writer And what I mostly want to talk about is that the people who are writing the "weird" themes or shipping fanfiction is mostly young teenage girls, and while I can't speak for all, for a big part it comes from a place of self-discovery and exploration, it is not rare for a teen to be curious about dark subjects, sure as hell when I was 14 I wasn't thinking if my supposedly +18 readerxsome adult celebrity vampire Fanfic was moral, I just wanted to write what I thought was interesting or edgy at the time, and that's how a lot of young writers start; I feel like people judge fanfiction as if they're written by adults when for the most part that's not the case. Now that I am an adult, a writer doing my own original works, fanfiction allowed me to start taking a liking to writing early on, to practice and do better. And yeah I look back and get embarrased at things I wrote as a teen but that is part of growing up TL;DR: I believe people are too harsh on fanfiction and fanfiction writers, even though it's mostly teenage girls doing it

When I wrote fanfics I used Yin, because that's what I heard in my head when i read y/n also because Yin is a name (it means silver in Chinese) or I would just use, random name generator

My experience with fandoms has been overwhelmingly positive, a place where I could keep the magic of my favourite books and series going long after they finished. Like John Green talks about unabashed and unironic enthusiasm, that's what fandom is to me. But then when I see toxic behaviour or accounts or subtopics within a fandom I just... don't engage, I block, and if it's really disturbing, I report it (happens most often in the avatar fandom because everyone forgets they're actually 14). If we treat fandoms for what they were always intended to be (a place for anyone to express their appreciation and share their enjoyment) then I genuinely can't understand why you would get angry at someone for just liking something different to you (obviously morally wrong things aside). The toxicity is sad and 100% I see it less in real life.
