We tried to find as many locations as possible from the “Chernobyl” series (HBO) and match the real frames with the frames of the series. What came out of this you can see in this video.

Its easy to see diferences between real Pripyat and Vilnius but i think Vilnius was best option to mimic Pripyat

And the scenes in the reactor control room was filmed in Ignalina power plant in lithuania. Which has the same control panels.

For that they could have used unit 3 of Chernobyl, many recreations and documents used it in the past, but I think the reason they chose Ignalina is so they whouldn't have to film parts in Chernobyl and the rest of the scenes outside and around the plant in Ignalina. The real Chernobyl plant is mostly in disrepair, with rusted pipes, discolored walls and whouldn't pass as the fresh 16 year old ish plant that it was in 1986 not to mention the new structure above unit 4.

@@Trollerybob Why do you neglect this city. You should at least paint these bulidings. Its so sad when polish people can only watch how lithuanians destroy this city
@thev31314 жыл бұрын
@@widzewlordi LMFAO... are you a troll? How are "Lithuanians destroying this city"? These districts didn't even EXIST when Poland had ANYTHING to do with the city. It was just fields of grass and sometime in the GDL - a small Lithuanian village and were never part of Vilnius. These boring block buildings were built in the 80's by the soviets to house all the workers doing their 3rd/2nd world tier field/factory jobs. (Just FYI, many of those buildings in Lithuania have been renovated, but clearly, for a series like this, a region where they are renovated and look nothing like the authentic ones is not what you'd want.) Kind of ironic, how you say it like a thing coat of paint would somehow make things ten times better, yet their authenticity + places of historical preservation like the KGB museum ended up being the filming spot for a blockbuster series worldwide and now tourists are flocking to those areas as a place of interest/fascination, thus also increasing it's wealth. If the city would've ended up in the hands of Poland it would have never had capital status and would just be another forgotten city in one of it's most neglected regions - the north-east. But hey, they might've put a green coat of paint on those soviet-era buildings. Amazing. I swear, there are SOME Polish people that would be much better off if they deflated their self-made sense of superiority. Maybe then this gentleman would stop being so passive-aggressive about a city, which he in one and the same sentence tried to show he cares about, yet showed he has no clue about whatsoever.

Never thought of where the series were filmed, but subconsciously always knew it wasn't in Russia cause it would take a ton of cgi to make it clean, to look like a real ussr. But looking at this I was overwhelmingly surprised, none of the buildings are looking like shit, streets are clean, no tires as fences, no graffitis, no arbitrarily build balconies to make their appartments slightly bigger. To me as a russian this looks surreal, and its sad. I'm happy for your people though!
@andw2638 Жыл бұрын
I have been to Klaipeda and Vilnius and can attest to glazing being added to balconies in both cities. One fact regarding Fabioniskes which is where this series was filmed, is that the balconies seem to have been glazed as part of the original construction. Which perhaps influenced the choice of filming location because the post-production team would only need to remove satellite dishes.
@lexus80182 жыл бұрын
Even though Vilnius is a lot different than Prypiat, there aren't too many prestine soviet concrete appartment cities out there, most are in Russia, which most likely was off limits due to the premise of the series and most eastern block countries have since then either repainted or further developed soviet appartment disricts making them unfit for Prypiat. Vilnius is one of the last few cities where the appartment districts aren't in disrepair falling appart, didn't go through large scale modernisation with new houses and still keep the original white/grey color scheme of 80s apartment blocks.
@andw2638 Жыл бұрын
My impression from streetview is that the Baltic states are a lot tidier than Russia. I have been to Fabijoniskes - a friend lived there for a while - and I recognised his building in some of the footage. The concrete has aged from the original white, which Pripyat would have had at the time. I had wondered what was done about satellite dishes, but in the footage of No.92 it can be seen that the dishes were either edited out or physically removed and then replaced. I suspect the digital approach was taken. When I visited there was some graffiti, more so on substations and boiler houses.

@andw2638 Жыл бұрын
I have been there before the series was filmed. I have not seen the entire film but when I was there the numbers had the street name (Fabijoniskes gatve) in Lithuanian and in Russian translation, with the Russian having been painted out but with that coat of paint peeling off in many instances.

Ignalina power plant. Thats the best place to mimic Chenrobyl.
@stovyklasvajone3 жыл бұрын
I think, they've built a set for this scene (and for firefighters near the blown reactor). However, some scenes from the inside of the power plant were filmed in Ignalina (exterior, some interior). For example, the reactor chamber, seen in the last episode, have been filmed in Ignalina. But the control room was recreated, because the film crew wasn't been allowed to film in the real control room due to safety and security concerns.
