This song reminds me of 1985. I was in the hospital dying from meningitis, in and out of consciousness and hearing this song each time I woke. Funny the things a person remembers.

Besides being rock/pop stars of their 80s era, most of their songs had a weight, some serious depth, & something REAL to say. Tears For Fears were no joke! "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" & "Shout" are essential listening. #TearsForFears

The video for "Woman In Chains" and, of course, the song with Loretta Adams is fantastic, and having bought my first record in 1961 their song "Advice For The Young At Heart" is in my all time Top 10 especially with the wonderful video of The Latino Wedding. :)

One of my all time fav movies Donnie Darko, uses this song and that movie is just everything. The scene with that song is so evocative. If you’ve never seen the movie o highly rec watching it. It’s a mind fck for sure, but omg it’s so good.
@smittybenzo46933 жыл бұрын
I thought I was the only one who'd mention that zoey...the way Donnie Darko uses a good portion of this song along with the imagery was always dope to me.
@Comrade_mommy3 жыл бұрын
@@smittybenzo4693 that’s so true of most of the soundtrack. The use of the echo and the bunny men song in the beginning....it just did something to me. The whole movie and the soundtrack is great at eliciting emotions while not trying to be some sappy tear jerker. I fcking hate those. I have a hard time explaining what it makes you feel, but it just makes you feel things. I wasn’t a teenager in the 80’s, but it gives me nostalgia. Normally I hate nostalgia bc we remember the good and not the fcked up sht from the past, but it’s a bittersweet nostalgia. It’s less about remembering a time and place but a feeling. At least that’s what the movie and the excellent use of the soundtrack do for me. Def one of my all time fav movies.

Many English bands of the 80s liked that strained vocals sound. Another example is Talk Talk. Their singer would intentional avoid exhaling while singing to produce a strained sound. There was a lot of experimentation then and that was something that was played with. Also Julian Cope as a solo artist and with The Teardrop Explodes did that.

Speaking of meeting people in libraries, I highly recommend an anime by Studio Ghibli called "Whisper of the Heart". It's a sweet junior high romance story that I discovered in my late 20s that I'm still really fond of. The main characters both wrestle with the challenges of the creative process - something that the director also sought balance in.
