Its a subjective thing man. I don't get how people don't see that. Joe reviewed Detroit become human and wasn't exactly pleased with it being more like an interactive movie. But *I* loved the game heavy rain which was pretty much what I think Detroit become human is and it being written like that was fine for me. I get that it is a more linear game, so I'm not looking for a huge sandbox game; but joe mentioning the limited gameplay isnt to be ignored. I can't remember if it was Nostalgia critic but I think he made a video about the objective and subjective nature of reviews and critics. Why the average audience might hate something but the critics like it and vice versa. I think you should go watch it if I'm correct that he made it. I think a good example on a critic writing about something would be zero punctuation because he doesn't put a number rating on something that isn't exactly the kind of thing you put a number on like a game or movie. Hell I think joe himself even harped on IGN for giving a game rating a decimal number. (Titanfall I think it was, and followed by the twitter crap.) But at the same time Yahtzee can be kind of harsh on games I've liked. Never take a reviewers critique of something to heart simply because they said #/10; you have to listen to what joe says that is good in the movie prior to the rating. Atmosphere and tension, no cheap jumpscares, but a long long wait for character building before anything really interesting happens. And you know what...some movies don't click with people regardless of the majority opinion. Its something you'll have to live with like a friend not liking chocolate or something. His word isn't god but more of a guide or suggestion.

If you really keep your mind active there are so many nuances and subtle story telling elements that I still find new pieces in the background each watch. Plus, that statement about the toy houses not coming into play is just flat out wrong. Completely wrong. There are so many nuances and beautiful story telling elements in those scenes.

Olivia Butler It's a flat out fact that this review is not good or comprehensive in terms of film critique. I'm sure that there are people (like you,) who find his movie reviews good. Which is fine, but there is objective fact to the quality of a film, and AJ(and his crew) do not understand what those facts are and thus cannot provide genuine analysis and critique. Movies are a form of art, same as painting, same as literature. The same process applies exactly to painting. Sure, most people would look at a piece of a good painting and say "wow, that's pretty good, they're talented." But, to offer a real critique requires well versed knowledge of the artform itself (color composition, symmetries of the background to the foreground, etc.) You may just shrug it off as we 're "boring," but this video is nowhere near being sufficient or capable of genuinely reviewing this film for what it actually is.

I don’t understand why people can’t get the slow burn. Everything doesn’t have to be shaky cam and jump scares to be good. 2001 is brilliantly boring. This movie wasn’t boring because it was meant to be felt. Family. Character driven. The horror element is secondary until the end.
@calebfoster18326 жыл бұрын
Mark Smith Great comment. If you can't empathize with the characters and feel what they're going through because you're looking for quick, cheap scares and horror tropes, you end up viewing the film's pacing negatively. Everything rides on character development and feeling what the family is feeling. That specifically is what makes the film so horrifying, as opposed to being jarred by a loud sound.

The problem is in the advertising. Did they advertise it as a scary, horror movie with intense scenes "this generations Exorcist". Yes.. yes they did. So, when it's not... that's problem. @nickbotic6 жыл бұрын
See, I agree with you. I appreciate the slow burn as much as anyone who takes film and storytelling seriously. I do enjoy cheap jump scares, they're fun sometimes, but I went into this expecting to see a legitimately scary film. The way I've described this film is that from a technical standpoint, it's absolutely stunning. The acting, the cinematography, the direction in particular, all downright fantastic. BUT. There is so much buildup to the final act, but it just ends up being a generic, cliche ending. I know that my explanation for this is going to be bad, but I sincerely cannot think of how to properly word what I mean. I was expecting the film to have an important meaning at the end. Like they were building to something meaningful, something mind-blowing. I expected all that time spent traveling uphill, that reaching the top of the mountain was going to be something so totally drastic. I can't really say exactly what I was expecting, as I'm not the writer of this film. I do write horror for a living, but obviously if I were going to speak on what I'd do differently with the ending I would need to change things in the first and second acts, but that's neither here nor there. SPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERS Rather, all that buildup, all that emotional manipulation, all that suspense, and the ending was......."we're bringing a demon into the world." That just seemed like a copout to me. Until we learn that that's what the goal is, I felt as if the ending was going to be something unique. Instead, it was simply...."we're bringing a demon into the world." When we learn that that's the payoff, the slow burn seems not worth waiting through. This is, of course, just my opinion! I'm glad you liked the film, and I'm very glad it was as successful as it was. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this was as solid a debut film as I've ever seen, and I am absolutely going to check out whatever Ari Aster puts out in the future. This one, unfortunately, just didn't do it for me. I'm very glad I saw it, I'm glad I contributed to its box office success, but the storytelling was just a huge letdown for me. Have a good day!

I get slow burn, I just perfer something from M. Night Shyamalan like Unbreakable, Split, or Sixth Sense. @guitarman03656 жыл бұрын
people should honestly be praising this for no jump scares. I for one am sick and tired of my senses being attacked and them having the nerve to call it horror. I actually want a film to do all the work in just making you feel uneasy in the atmosphere and tone of the film rather than a ghost jumping out here or plates shattering there. Those horror tropes have been done to death. This is perhaps why they liken it to the exorcist, not per say claiming it as scary as the film but that it like the exorcist is a film all about the atmosphere of uneasiness. If I recall there was never if maybe just a couple jumpscares the rest of the film was entirely just in your face creepiness.

I can't even comprehend being bored by this film unless you just have an extremely short attention span paired with a complete lack of appreciation for filmmaking craft, mood, character development/emotion/performances, etc. It was easily one of the fastest two hours I can recall having in the theater because I was gripped, transfixed to the screen by that sheer craft in just about every scene for one reason or another and what'll easily be regarded as one of the best performances of 2018 in Toni Collette. It was a deeply unsettling experience that aimed to shake the human heart, violently, and took its time in building tension that had me deeply uncomfortable. Not by this apparent need for assaulting the senses with loud noises and easy scares, assaulting your psychology and emotions. Nothing happened in the first hour? Are we for real with this? Jesus. This is why we don't get this kind of effort every year and why most studios are quick to fuck up a vision a filmmaker may have for "Make more things "HAPPEN" here/more SCARES and action! Jingle the keys HARDER--the audience are just idiots!"

If you have a slow burn that doesn't have anything interesting happening then some people aren't going to enjoy it.

That’s the point of a good horror film. It’s about the build up and the final payoff. It’s not about payoff, payoff, payoff. This isn’t an action movie. It’s a slow burn, visual horror film. It’s not about jump scares. The movie was amazing. I feel bad for those that didn’t grasp it.

I think the opening shot of the dollhouse showing the dad walking into his son's room was to hint that the cult were always watching and preparing to manipulate the family members like effigies. So the inclusion of the dollhouse was therefore very important. Paimon was also said to have extensive knowledge of the arts and sciences, so it makes sense that the mother and her daughter also practised making works of art, a skill probably passed down by the grandmother (the queen) to her lineage.
@ThePokestopPapi2 жыл бұрын
Yup the dollhouse was symbolic to the family being puppets...and puppets that couldn't see the strings, let alone know that they were puppets to begin with! Everything was preordained, and they had absolutely no control over anything in their lives.

Keep in mind, Joe's perspective is purely from a casual point of view. If you really love cinema and study the film, you really see the genius behind the whole thing. I think the director is a master of his craft and it really shines throughout this movie. They might think the first hour was "boring" but I saw it as building the audience up slowly but surely with agony and tension. This movie does a fantastic job of building up tension and then keeping you there without letting you go. This can be done through more then just scares. This is one of the most masterful horror movies I have seen in a long time and this is coming from a current film student's perspective.

Exactly, something was always fucking happening (even when we think it wasn't). The amount of easter eggs in this film associated w/ pagan rituals are amazing. The words, symbolism, and even the ending music is associated w/ the demon "Paimon" who is said to love that similar bell sound. Here's some info from a article I found: "Paimon: Is also frequently written "Paymon', and sometimes "Paimonia'. Probably from Hebrew, POMN, = a tinkling sound or small bell. This is again derived from the Hebrew root POM, = to agitate, impel, or strike forward" The attention to detail is under appreciated. I swear these guys have no skill at reading between the lines, or appreciating build up.

SPOILERS****** When Annie is going through her mother's things in the attic around the start of act 3, she finds an embroidered mat her grandma is known to make with the name "charles" on it. I believe the grandma cursed charlie in the womb with the spirit of Paimon because she was originally supposed to be born male, hence the mat with the name "charles". Thus causeing the grandma to put a plan into action with her coven to try and transfer that evil spirit from charlie to peter

For me, creepy movies are vastly more effective than "Scary" movies because after a certain age, nothing scares you anymore (besides a potential army siren or demolition siren that makes you think the country is being invaded by goodness knows what). Psychological thrillers/horrors all the way. No matter the grind, I can stick it. This film reminds me highly of Mama which was an absolutely outstanding horror film. Especially in its third and final act.

The parts you thought were boring didn't end up making me check my watch, i was pretty engrossed the whole time. I think because the shock at the beginning of the film caught me off guard because I didn't expect anything like that to happen so early, and during the middle part that dragged on a little, I was still engaged because it was coming from a high point, winding down, and then started ramping up again at the end. This is a one of a kind movie and in my opinion the best horror movie I've ever seen due to the masterful acting, atmosphere and direction, and I've seen most of them. This the type of movie that is packed with subtle details that can easily be missed if you take your eyes away from the screen. You do have to play very close attention to every small detail to get the full story. You guys did miss some very subtle yet important details, hence your confusion about the possession of the mother. For maximum effect, I recommend watching it again alone in one sitting with zero distractions in the dark with surround sound or headset on large screen. Remember to play very close attention to every detail (both foreground and background effects). If you are a horror movie fan, the slow burn is worth the wait.

Horror is in a shitty place right now because people don't know what they want from it. People who claim they just "Want great horror films" don't actually care about a strong story and strong directing being shown to them..... They just want quick scares and thrills which is what got us to the point where 90% of horror films suck. Horror used to be seen as an art form with movies like Psycho and Exorcist, a means of story telling that has a lasting impact on the watcher..... Now we've forgot about that and just watch a scary face jumping into our faces then complain when it happens too much or too little. Every classic horror film has a very slow first 3/4 Halloween, Psycho and exorcist to name a few but these days people just want quick thrills

Really? There is so much to address that’s wrong but the fact that anyone could think the miniatures played no significant role blows my mind. The devils workshop? Seeing as the characters were just pawns in this cult and demons’ plans, I really can’t think of a more creative or creepy way that they could symbolize this. That, and the miniatures made it possible for the audience to get a glimpse of Annie’s past. We were actually able to see an exact replica of the events without her Ever having to explicitly mention them. And for me it made the memories even more creepy/real

Some people just dont have the mind to receive whats this movie is doing. Its aimed towards a special audience. I watched it after I saw Midsommar and was super hyped because I freaking love Midsommar. I think it is not as good as Midsommar, cause I hoped there wouldnt be like this supernatural stuff. The ouija thing takes me out of the mood cause it is always the same in every horror movie. But there is a lot more in this movie you cannot understand by just watching it once and without additional informations. Plus the acting and the soundtrack are really top notch. Its not that the songs from the soundtrack are super nice, its the elements the composer was using and everything has a meaning. It gets more genius the more you know about it.

I came hear because I’m sick of hearing how scary and good this movie is. I’ve taken two naps trying to watch it.

What is up with Joe thinking this movie is boring, this is one of the few horror movies within the past 10 years that has actually built a genuine connection and hope for its characters. SPOILER: You sympathize with the son after his sister dies, and he's just sitting there, motionless, unable to look in the back of the car. You sympathize with the dad as he tries to hold his family together after his daughter's death while his wife is seemingly going insane. The story the son is learning about in class is a direct reflection of what is happening to his family. No matter what the boy does, his fate is sealed, and he is doomed. Also this movie didn't enlist cheap jump scares. It used the exact opposite with the mom up in the corner of the ceiling for a solid 30 seconds, looming above the son. It used silence to great effect instead of loud obnoxious noises. Not only that, but this movie has such great detail. You can go back and see that the history teacher of the son is actually a cult member and shows up towards the end of the movie. They were all around him, slowly setting him up for their dark ritual and he thought he was going crazy. I loved this movie, it made me wanna hit the power button on my computer in the best way possible. I wish I could see it for the first time again.

Me being a big horror fan I was absolutely stunned with how good this was, mainly off the fact that it didn’t have cheesy jump scares but instead throws disturbing violent scenes which really makes it stand out over cliche horror films

This movie only got a 7/10 from them? Angry Joe even gave Suicide Squad higher than this

I think a lot of people miss the meaning of the film. The theme is free will which the family have none of, they are manipulated by the cultists and cannot avoid their fate. The mother almost kills her kids while sleepwalking, something she admits she had no control over. the name of the film is hereditary- a process of which we have no control over.
