This movie made me uncomfortable... such a slow burn horror. That being said, the cinematography is something that should be studied by film makers, it was brilliant.

The thing with Hereditary is that it isn't overtly startlingly scary, instead it's unsettling to the point where you're still thinking about the imagery days later. In other words it's what true horror stories should be. Also Alex Wolfe and Toni Collette are magnificent on this movie

I was not scared in the slightest. This movie has amazing cinematography and acting, but overall, it failed as a horror movie. This just wasn't scary. I know I am in the minority here, and people are gonna accuse of me only liking "mainstream" horror, but I feel like it did poorly on the actual horror aspects of the movie. The Shining had almost the same thematic premise, but it twisted the psychological elements in a far more gut wrenching manner.

The fact that most audiences hated this movie just shows how shitty mainstream horror has gotten in the past 20 years. Scream pretty much reignited the flames of the horror genre in the late 90s and by the mid to late 2000s we were already getting shitty horror all the time again. And now people are talking about stuff like The Nun like it's an amazing horror movie and super scary. Nah, it's not. It's got jump scares. That doesn't make it scary. I love horror movies to death and it's sad to see so many people captivated with shit like Ouija, The Bye-bye Man, etc instead of something like Hereditary which actually took more thought than "ok so a group of teenagers are going to do something and then something bad is gonna happen and then they'll research it and them they'll think they're gonna win, but they'll actually die! perfect! everyone will love it!". Anyway rant over. This is a fantastic horror movie. Movie of the year in 2018 imo.

BrokenGod Ent. You seem to have some excellent taste and knowledge, good sir! I used to be a horror noob, knew nothing about the genre, until at least 10 years ago, a real good friend of mine and film buff, decided to make like a horror themed film night with me every Halloween! And we kept going man, I mean I already knew stuff like Scream of course but he showed me stuff like the original Suspiria and some other giallos and Black Christmas. I learned stuff like Eden Lake or Wolf Creek and kept learning more and more about the genre. So in a sense that way we kept educating each other (I showed him the occasional Human Centipede, Get Out, Baskin, The Invitation or some other stuff, he hadn´t seen yet), he showed me every Halloween up until the 4th one, we went to the cinema together to watch "Evil Dead", which was glorious (had been shown the original The Evil Dead by him before, liked it but couldn´t get into part 2, just too silly for me overall) and then last Halloween I showed him Hereditary. He liked it overall but had some mixed feelings of it. But after all that I just told you, I just can´t deny, that I´m absolutely in love with the genre!.....

I agree with everything you said about the general characteristics of modern horror. That said, I didn't really like Hereditary. The premise as a whole feels like a film student read an occult wiki page and thought "this is what I want to dabble with". He patiently fleshes out the film until the last 20 minutes where he gets frustrated and just throws every horror trope imaginable to the wall to see if it sticks. Great individual scenes and Toni Collette is amazing, but overall it's a 3/5 for me.

the first time I watched Hereditary, it was a VERY shitty upload from a movie theater (streaming sites, you wins some you lose some in early viewings) so much of the scariness was lost on that, months later I was listening to Dead Meat do a review on it and I was like, "Wait, WHAT?? WHAT happens at the end??!!" and upon rewatches, it definitely gets scarier and scarier when you realize all the minute details that just make the movie so horrifying. Great movie, amazing editing, awesome horror build-up.

what scared me about this movie is the realistic component, like you’re just taking your sister to a party she gets an allergic reaction and dies and it’s your fault and you live with that guilt and you’re haunted by it. peter’s acting was phenomenal and the mother is by far the best actor. the whole thing is something beyond horror it’s like psychological terror, it’s disturbing, it fucks you up and rlly makes u think about the trauma this family is going through that could, in a way, happen to you.

So Charlie was taken over by the god, Paemon, or however you spell it. That is why she was so weird. The grandma tried to get the son but the mom wouldn't let her ANYWHERE near him, so she got to Charlie instead. Then started working to get the son's body. The light going around is a representation of Paemon, and then he finally enters the son after he falls out the window, completing the hereditary take over. GREAT MOVIE

3 quick things to consider on your second viewing (whenever that is): 1) The naked blonde smiling man in the closet near the end was actually in attendance during the grandma's funeral in the beginning. you see his face, and if you take note, it's even more disturbing when your mind realizes he's naked and in their house later in the movie. 2) Charlie was always possessed from the start. Somehow, the grandma put the demon spirit into her body. 3) When the son (Peter) wakes up with the bandage on his nose and he's in his dark room, be sure to look in the upper-left part of the frame. Every reaction video that "sees it" puts it in their reaction video. The fact that you *didn't* leads me to believe you didn't squint your eyes enough and in the right direction. hehehe ;) Now, onto Midsommar. It's also really good. Different, but still really good. Great reaction, keep it up. Love, from The States!

Approximately halfway through, when things started to become unsettling, we heard a pack of wild coyotes howling in the distance. It was one of the most disturbing experiences I've had recently but in an incredible way. The fact that this movie wormed its way into our nervous systems to such an extent that some wailing coyotes in the distance genuinely freaked us out is a major achievement. As great as I think this and his other film is, still leaves an uneasy feeling in me long after watch. Essentially seeing evil win is that much more terrifying than any jump scare. Adding to that, cult behavior also terrifies me. Brings me back to things like The Omen, Rosemary's Baby or even Children of the Corn. There was this movie called Spellbinder back in the 80's or early 90's that kind of stayed with me because of the evil winning +cult aspect. I think Wickerman is another in that same light...

The “something” you noticed on the pole (spoiler) which kills his sister later is creepy foreshadowing, it is the symbol of the demon which also benefits from her death when it possesses him.

The 3 head symbol is represented by charlie's, Annies and her mother's head. The light that is over Peter's body after he jumps out of the window represents his death and his spirit leaving and Paimon's entering his body, he died when he jumped out of the window....

I don't think he died. They needed a "healthy male body". If they could use a dead body they could've used the body of Annie's brother, the one who had topped himself but they didn't. And we saw the light/spirit entering living bodies before, with Charlie, Annie or Peter in the classroom..

Came across your video in my recommended, and I have to say that I loved your analysis and reaction-mine was nearly identical after my first watch. I have never seen a horror that elicited such a strong emotional response from me-the superb writing and direction, the cinematography, and the score (that damn music!!!) are what made me fall in love with this film and Ari Aster's young career. I hate to sound too over the top, but this movie really changed me. Nice video! Subscribed!

I'm a huge fan of horror, I love any type, bad and good film alike, but Hereditary? It has to be one of the best I've ever seen, hands down, I don't think I've ever felt so uneasy and so unsettled after watching a film, which in turn, impressed me so much. Ari Aster and A24 are a fantastic combination.👏

This movie, is honestly a masterpiece, its terrifying in another way, and so uncomfortable to watch. I think people who are super into mainstream horror, hated it. Another great commentary. This is one of the best horror films I've seen in a long time. I was rooted to the chair in the cinema. Awesome tension. It's better than Midsommar, but that film is equally well shot and also gives you those lingering thoughts after the film is over. You should definitely do a commentary on that. Ari Aster is definitely the best up and coming horror director (this was his first feature). You might like another great horror film The Babadook. It' is an Australian film and is probably equal with Hereditary as my favourite horror films of the last 10 years. Btw I've been subbed to your channel for a few years but rarely comment. It's great to see your channel finding more success and growing the way it has been. Keep up the great work.

i love this movie for the fact that not only did it scare the crap out of me, but because it had that quality where it just gets under your skin and makes you feel kinda sick. kubric was good at this kind of thing. it's the kind of movie that's hard to rewatch because it just makes me feel bad. but this movie actually helped me through a really difficult time. after my mom died last year, i watched it several times over and over and even though it may have contributed to me being in a bad place in some ways, it helped me work through some deep stuff from my own family. at a certain point i was like. ok, i will always love this movie but enough.. i never want to see it again lol. i still love seeing people's reaction to it though because it's a masterpiece and there really isn't any other horror movie like it out there these days

Yeah, the cinematography is by far my favorite part of this movie. They shot in a way that resembles the mother's miniatures to signify the fact that the whole thing is planned by the cult to bring Paimon the host he wants. Like the mother controls the miniatures, the cult controls the family.

Wow, first The Lighthouse and then Hereditary, both among my favorite horror films of all time. I'm really surprised at how many little details you spotted on your first viewing. The biggest thing you missed was probably Annie hanging in the top left corner in the wide shot of Peter getting up from bed at the end. One thing I love about this film is that it answers most of the open questions by the end to give a satisfying conclusion while still providing lots of room for interpretation. Hereditary covers loads of different themes and ideas, one big thing obviously being the metaphor for hereditary diseases. One of the classroom scenes early in the film is also pretty essential: If you're incapable of preventing inevitable tragedy, does this make it more or less tragic?
