About Sweet Briar Farm
We are a small farm located in Central/Northern Michigan. We farm every inch of our 6 acres. We breed Registered Dairy Goats, Dexter Cattle, and Heritage Hogs. Clean healthy food is important to us and we like to produce the majority of our food on the farm and we grow and raise enough to sell to local customers. Producing our own food also means we forage for wild edibles such as mushrooms and tap our maple trees in the spring to make maple syrup. In 2019 we added honeybees to the farm and have had as many as 30 active hives producing honey for us.
Our goats include Nubian goats, Mini Nubians, Fainting Goats, and Nigerian Dwarf goats.
Our Heritage Hogs include: registered Berkshires, Tamworth, Registered Kune Kune, and Hereford.

We have gone through 4 different Mangalitsa sows and finally now have two that have temperaments that we can live with. However, we still would never trust them around strangers. They are like guard dogs and will get highly aggressive with strangers. They are truly a weird breed but omg... the meat is just AMAZING. Im glad you guys truly love working with and are running with the Hereford. They are a solid, great pig!

When ever I would have to fix a fence or gate etc. I would need Kelsey to run defense so they wouldn’t eat me lol

@@SweetBriarFarmMichigan Yeah, they can be very difficult to manage!! And that seems to be a genetic thing as well so when you buy one, it may or may NOT be a nice adult. It’s a breed that just demands a LOT.

I really enjoyed this video! I have a hereford boar and a berkeshire guilt, she is due to farrow in about a month. It was cool to see what the cross might look like! We have raised straight berkshire and the meat quality was great, so I was very glad to here that the hereford is also excellent!

Our last video we shared our bad luck with our Berkshire sows. We gave up on doing pure Berkshire’s. Our berk boar is a little younger so we are keeping him. We will be sad to see our Tamworth boar go he is a really nice boar. I am selling him to a nice guy that will give him a nice home.

hello, I am in Northern Michigan, and am looking to get into pigs. I have done a lot of research and I would like to do Hereford and Berkshire. I will be starting in the spring of 2025 and I will be looking to get a breeding pair or two. What do you guys sell your breeders for? and will you have any come spring?

So how many pounds of meat would you expect from a 300 lb pig?

Hanging weight (skinned and gutted) should be around 220lbs and you would yield about 150lbs of meat for the freezer. We usually get about 24 lbs of bacon per pig!

Last group I did pigs were all around 320-330 lbs live weight, hanging weights ended up around 220-230 never really weighed the final product.

Yes. We have crossed the Hereford to our Tamworth boar and saved one gilt from last falls litter. She is bred back to the Tamworth boar and we may keep one gilt out of the next litter. All the future litters will be hereford x Berkshire and Hereford Tamworth x Berkshire
