Ssangyong Rexton Tow Car Review 2019 (CC)

We bought a 2021 swift sprite import. First up was a 70ltr internal water tank and a 4" lift kit fitted. Loving it, recently spent 10 weeks living on the road on a 5000km trek. We pick up our new 2022 rexton tow vehicle next week and we are off on our retirement adventure. Love the channel cheers from down under.

A wonderful car. I've bought a second hand Rexton a couple of months back, impressive seat view and decent mpg. My only issue was that it stunk as soon as it was delivered , full of curry powder as an old spice rack had leaked in the boot. After a few trips to the valet the smell has really started to go. X

Its been faultless in the 3 years we have had it. Tows very well, mpg is average, insurance is cheap, servicing it the biggest outlay. It’s worth going for a test drive, Karina

Huge respect Karina on seeing you towing the caravan, bet Jules is happy and impressed too. Were now getting excited as on Monday we have Towbar Express coming to our home fitting a detachable towbar and manufacturers wiring so it talks to the electronic safety features on our 2018 Nissan x trail 1.6 dci Tekna. We have not gone with the swan neck for one reason as the gallery pictures show some cutting of the bodywork would need to be done but detachable all the same. Enjoy the rest of your ventures...

Try a remap on rexton im sure it would get over 200bhp.. i did on my Xtrail and it pulls lovely now..oh and still have great fuel economy....

Excellent video. We seriously looked at one in April. What eventually stopped us buying one was an unbelievable deal at out local Merc dealer on a demo. I was really impressed by the kit levels and finish on the Rexton. 👍👍👍

Another great vlog. Notice that you have your towing mirrors attached from underneath. Not seen them attached in this way before. Is there a reason for this?

Hi Andy, as the top is curved and thicker, the bottom of the mirror is flat and thinner so it gets a proper grip and is less likely to break the casing. 👍👍

It is an excellent ride and a great motorway cruiser too. I don’t know the prices over there but here in the UK they are excellent value. There are a few Facebook groups for owners and everyone is very positive about them. 😊

But no one knows better than someone who has been driving and towing such a long distance like you have for sure! Rexton is a very good value down under too. I have been hesitant between this and Skoda Kodiaq but now I think I'm getting a Rexton. Thanks again.

I have a friend who bought the Skoda and he has been very disappointed with build quality and bits dropping off it. He plans to change it next year so again, that’s owner feedback. We have had no issues with the Rexton. Stay safe and enjoy your weekend 😊

Great review of a great vehicle and loads of bang for your buck's, couldn't help but notice that yous have lost the 2 black grommets from the side of the Al-ko hitch for the break pads might be worth a check👍🏻 happy holidays 😎

Great review. - thanks for doing this , I’ve been considering a Rexton as my next car for a while and looked forward to your review after using it for some time. I like the car and took a test drive at my local dealer near Manchester but wasn’t really impressed by their staff and didn’t have much range in to choose. I like everything about it but had read a lot about the lack of oomph. However I’m not one for speed and would rather get there safely so it doesn’t unduly bother me Thanks once again and continue to enjoy your travels Best Howard

Good review, as ever. Problem is not too many dealerships. Our “local” one is maybe 50 minutes drive away, ironically at a caravan dealership (Catterick Caravans/Leisureworld).

Hi guys. I am not a caravan owner yet but love to watch the vlogs. I must have missed it but just wondered why Jules doesn't tow the caravan? I have to say that i really like the Adria and am trying to pursuade my hubby to buy one when we retire in a couple of years!

Morning Lynn, thanks for watching. Jules doesn’t have B+E on his licence so cannot tow our combination without taking a test, or using L plates and being supervised. We can definitely recommend caravanning and touring when you retire. Thank you Karina

Our car has a button we push to switch parking sensors off it’s great noticed my husband used it when we were away.

We don’t have front sensors would have been nice to have button for the back ones though . After seeing your video now understand why husband switched ours off when hitching up caravan . You’re car is huge ours is quite small it’s a Hyundai ix35 4 wheel drive version. Better at towing our van than old car was .

Hi Julian, it tows very well and will overtake fine but if you’re comparing it to say a Volvo D5 you will feel it’s underpowered. We would buy the Reston again knowing what we know now. Thanks 😊 Karina

Great review as always guys, looks good value as a tow car especially with the 7 year warranty, but the lack of power is concerning, currently drive a Volvo XC60 2.4 d5 which is due for replacement and find that underpowered when towing especially when on the hills in North Yorkshire, also have a vw amorok v6 which pulls like a train, u forget you’ve got caravan on at times😃

Ahhh Richard, I feel I can answer this as we went from a XC60 R-design nav lux D5 AWD (240bhp) on a 62 plate that was a 5 year lease. I loved that car (apart from the turning circle) but they are quite light. I can easily say that the Ssangyong is better at towing. Don’t get me wrong it wouldn’t keep up with the Volvo in a straight line race but when it pulls because of the torque and the weight of the Ssangyong it does this extremely well. I drove the Volvo all over N York’s and know the hills well and the Ssangyong has pulled the Adria all over the Cornwall hills which in my opinion are of a greater gradient. The Amarok again is an extremely good tow car and very capable. So in short I would definitely try it. 👍👍😊

We had a 5 year warranty on ours but we sold it as we have a Motorhome now so dont need such a big car with higher running costs. If i was buying a big tow car again it would be the Rexton. 😊 Karina

Great car but what a shame its wade depth is only a puny 350 mm - a veritable puddle! That figure is for the Musso which this car is based on, as I can't get Ssangyong to confirm the actual figure for this model (or the Korando!). This hugely compromises it as a real off-roader. Compare that to the Mitsubishi Shogun Sport at 700 mm or the Nissan Navara at 650 mm. 350 mm is equivalent to the Skoda Yeti, soft-roader, wade depth.

Thanks JM, I have never considered the wading depth to be honest so thanks for providing this information. I would certainly put some decent tyres on it too for real off roading. We have tested ours out a bit and found wet muddy grass is its biggest challenge. Thanks for watching 😊👍

I get 28mpg on a porsche cayenne. Towing... for 35k id rather buy a used cayenne with an air suspension

Ssangyong making great strides in the market especially for towing use. BUT, it really is financial suicide purchasing one of these. It's still a ssangyong after all and dealers are giving rock bottom prices in px for the brand, knowing they will struggle to sell on. Also looking at the rear seats piled high with chairs, the boot must be very small.

Thanks Dave, yes px values are poor, thankfully we intend to keep ours for some time and make use of the 7 year warranty. The boot is bigger than nearly any SUV but we have a German Shepherd and his large dog crate is in the boot. We use the back seats so our stuff doesn’t get covered in his dog hair.
