Instead of lava, a 25 block drop into a hopper that points into a chest to just north of it would allow you to go straight down on the unofficial spots and reclaim the diamonds that are mined. Then it will always be profitable. Dropping diamonds into lava is where you lose money here.

The problem are the diamonds that get lost to lava. Noone gets those. He could have used a magma block with a hopper minecart underneath. So if they loose Grian gets the dias they mined. Also you can hear lava but not magma blocks.

Also to save diamonds in your dsd game, you can put a different block in the hole so they can exchange those blocks for diamonds. That way you dont lose so many diamonds when they die in lava :)

Honestly, it can never fail to amaze me how people can build all this in survival. It's not that I'm doubting anything, it's just that it's just so cool being able to come up with that kind of stuff and then gather all the materials and then build it (Cause I mean sure, Creative buildings are cool but doing it in survival just really shows that youre good at what you do)

If you want to really want to up the pucker factor, you should add voids. Just have them have little pockets of falling. A reminder of how it happens in the darkness, usually fall into lava, so a void before a diamond ore would make more people bail sooner.
