On the topic of homework... When I was a student, I hated homework, especially in the lower and middle grades. As a parent... I hate my kids having homework for several reasons. The primary reason I have is that their brains need real breaks to properly and thoroughly process what they have ingested. For instance, we in the States always hear about the dangers of learning loss over summer break, and yet, I think it's actually good. I forget things when I don't use them and I can get very frustrated - but it is natural. And when I have to go back and relearn what I've forgotten, the learning is more extensive and more deeply rooted as a result. On the contrary, my kids personally tend to have their largest mental jumps over the summer. Their beginning-of-year assessments are always enormously higher than their previous end-of-year assessments. They almost always subsequently make the biggest learning leaps those first couple of months back to school. On the other hand, starting about halfway through the school year, they struggle more and more to maintain interest - even when amazing teachers do tons to keep their interest piqued. I think this would be lessened if they didn't have homework and had more real breaks. Maybe shorter summers and longer winter breaks. Give them time to process in the background as they extend their learning capacity through other, less forced, and less judged/graded endeavors. Next, They need plenty of enjoyment to balance the workload of learning subjects or topics they have little to no interest in. Another big one is that as an adult, while I completely believe in education and higher education and in intense study and development of skills, I also have learned that versatile social skills, the ability to carve out real enjoyment for mental and emotional health, the practice at choosing how to spend their time to create their own balance of work and life, and so much more is as important to achieving a successful adult life. I believe that homework slows down the gaining expertise in these areas. There are plenty more reasons, but that covers the general gist of it.

"being with cats is a service" I kid you not I just wrote a paper that discussed that very point! there's a lot of research that proves that interacting with animals improves executive functions, and I was writing a paper about how species other than dogs should be allowed to be service animals that included some of that research.
