I think that the Hermits need to find the perfect balance between scripted and more normal gameplay. I think Season 6 and 7 were great examples of this: Some great shenanigans and storylines which felt very natural and still left plenty of times for great builds, interactions, etc.

the more natural storytelling is better, because it makes the series more interesting while still feeling like friendly shenanigans that happen all the time normally

I think Hermits can go as far as they like to tell a story, but I think the story should feel natural and should be told because it's a good story and because it fits. Just because you can do it doesn't necessarily mean that you should do it. Some of the more heavy roleplay and scripted stuff may have felt disorienting but it was good at surplying variety to the season. If "the main storyline" this season was just another re-hash of the civil war (as the mycelium resistance vs HEP plot kinda was) then Hermitcraft would be more stale and boring. Instead we have Derpcoin, the Hermatrix, and big moon storylines which are all experimental, fresh and new. I think these sorts of storylines shouldn't be avoided completely in the future just because they were fairly jankily executed the first time around.

@@FlourishPorridge Honestly I felt that the hermatrix storyline was incredibly well executed and the finale felt like something out of a real sci-fi show and I really liked that and I was perfectly fine with the RP. I mean if some of the hermits like doing that they should keep doing what they enjoy not to mention that we really need more good sci-fi nowadays as most of the larger corperations keep pumping out nothing but garbage

If you dislike roleplaying dont feel pressured to do it. I both enjoy hermits that do it and hermits that don't, and it definitely became too much to handle this season. My favorite hermit is Etho and he doesnt even touch roleplaying at all so I think just do what you're most comfortable with X :)

My “issue” with S8 was how the Hermits never really “lived” in their bases as much as they did in previous seasons. Most of them only just finished their bases and some didn’t even. I really loved the builds this season and it’s a shame to not see them being used and lived in to their full extend. Just seems a bit pointless to spend months building a home and then not live in it. The ending was absolutely spectacular though.

took my words straight from my mouth, it felt like a lot of the "big" hermits decided to start project that had way to big of a scope and those project dragged on for so long in season 7 that it was clear that they needed a very long break, which they just didn't give themseleves. my hope for season 9 is that it will be more "small", instand of everyone doing a giant build of their own, maybe invest more in the small stuff, and create minigames or just anything original that just shows creativity and fun! (altough i have to say that the decision to make the main island so small in this season and forcing everyone to interact with eachother more was probably the biggest saving grace of this season and i highly hope that they will continue doing that in future seasons)

Big Word here. Everything that went wrong with S8 were the things that were going wrong since 7 (maybe even 6) but worse 6 was a huge season, followed by another season almost instantly. 7 must've been hard for hermits because it started real slow but then minecraft got the huge 1.16 update. I feel that with season 8 they had to really work hard to milk content out of a game that they were probably getting tired of (not just of the game, but you know, being on the same loop over and over again)

I like better storylines that just kinda appear as the season goes, like season 6 demise, the myselium war on season 7, or the tree war between Mumbo and Grian at the start of season 8 than planned storylines like the moon getting bigger. Also something I really enjoy from hermitcraft is the fact that it is mostly vanilla Minecraft, with only some “quality of life” and commodity changes like the proximity chat mod, the rain thing, or the multiplayer sleep, changes that don’t heavily change the game, and help hermits both in game, and with creating content, unlike most smps and letsplays currently. Yeah. I enjoyed the hat mod as well at first because it was clear the hermits were having a lot of fun, but really that's also the most important part of Hermitcraft to me - that it's really just friends having fun. Stuff like the civil war or the mycelium war had that energy of just friends having fun with it (same with the hippie/time travel thing in season six even though that was definitely more scripted) and things just evolving from interactions, whereas stuff like the moon thing almost felt like some people were "forced" to address The Moon every episode and stop their builds and stories to do moon things. There were still some fun moon storyline moments, it just felt a bit more forced and a little less of the Hermitcraft I'd started watching for.

100% this. Some of it is entertaining, but I found it all a bit much. I loved 7 but I also think the scale of building in 8 was an amazing thing to watch and see. So many ideas and just wonderful all around to watch. Being a older guy I also really liked the derp coin concept and the staking element. The thought process of bringing micro transactions and crypto to a head was a great concept and totally agree with the comment about the success being evident in the outrage it drove. Hopefully that can be illuminated by the other hermits with their communities. Lastly, I watched a lot of you go out of your comfort zone this season and it was cool to see. Certainly has inspired me to do a little more building a decoration of my red stone contraptions. All around a solid season and I wish it had been longer but I get it. I sort of thought you would be moving the world to 1.18 and keeping it moving forward. For a while I though the moon would be responsible for pulling the landscape up and forming the new mountains but overall I understand why it ended. 1.18 is a completely new thing. I wiped my overworld to not have to deal with blended terain either.

I feel that with the short season, everyone was still in the base building phase by the end of it, compared to longer seasons where they eventually branch out and work on other projects and focus on interactions. The closeness of the bases was nice, especially with the northeast bunch regularly interacting and 'provoking' each other. By far the best part of the season was the introduction of Prox chat. One of the best aspects of hermitrcaft is seeing all these great personalities interact and prox chat just allows that to be smoother and more spontaneous compared to text chat or having to hop in discord calls.

I wonder if this is a consequence of base building. This is something I don't like about a lot of KZbinrs and bases; they have to be this massive impressive build that just ends up being an empty room full of chests. I liked what BDubs did I think last season where he just had a small house for a while and instead went onto to do other projects, You can still have the big builds and you have to get established before you can do them, but I feel like so much of the seasons focus on this giant base build that takes up a lot of time instead of moving on to other projects.

I feel like the problem with "YT Minecraft you have to do a role play" comes from that fallacy of "Minecraft is for kids" and so it's easy as a Minecraft creator to get stuck into that mentality of engaging kids, talking in silly voices, doing storylines, scripted events etc. Without realising that obviously alot of kids play Minecraft as a starting game...but its also 10 years old now and so alot of people in Minecraft now are 25+ who are more interested in the technical things within the game, building styles etc who want more grown up content as well.

The addition of proximity chat was great, but I feel like it was much better when there was a shopping district. It allows for more collabs and it kept a fun, non-scripted storyline in hc season 7. While the small amount of roleplaying is fine, its important to keep a balance. Without a shopping district, parts of the continent can't connect with others as well, meaning less interactions and more of hermits trying to put in their own stories. But thats just my opinion and I probably could've written something better. edit: i realised this was written terribly, here’s what I was really trying to put across: say you only watch one hermit. You’ll see them walk into some shop in the shopping district and compliment the creator. or maybe you’ll see them walk up to a competition stand thing and again, talk about the creator or maybe others who are taking part. that might encourage the viewer to go watch the other pov, see that person’s general area and perspective. with a shopping district, for me at least, it feels like things in the server get more down to earth and less surreal. They may not interact properly but at least they acknowledge each other instead of only those who are in their vicinity, they are in war with or have invited them for stuff (cough cough, zedaph, cough cough)

The other hermits get this too a lot. Grian and others have had to countless times say "Don't worry about (such and such wrongdoing or destruction) we all get along and are friends so don't harass other hermits." I'm concerned that this is clouding everyone's view of things. Other than the Boatem trolling (which was still taken as good fun), I think a lot of the messing around in this season was pretty chill. Fun as the Mycelium War was, people (viewers) really seemed to take that too seriously which ended up ruining the experience. This was just people running around and messing with one another in a clearly fun way. But people (again, viewers) really seem to be taking offense to things, and I worry that this is resulting in a lot of negative outpouring to the Hermits. I hope that they remember that this is a vocal minority and don't overcorrect in the future because of it, thinking that far more people were upset than really were.

I feel that one of the major problems with S8's ending was that the expectation of a short season hadn't been set from the begging, and at the last few episodes it still felt like there was a lot still waiting to happen at that world, the moon sudenly crashing and detroying everything didn't feel like a natural conclusion to that storyline. By the end of seasons 6 and 7 everything felt concluded and there didn't seem that there were many ways for them to expand so the places they ended felt right (maybe they'd gone on for a bit too long but i'd prefer that to the season 8 ending that felt way too soon) But it's not only a matter of absolute size, the Third/Last life both felt like they lasted for the perfect amount, and they were far shorter than s8, but there was always a clear expectation of "this is a short series and people will loose their lives until everyone drops out". But in s8 the expectation was that it was going to be as as grand and last about as much as seasons 6 and 7, so by the end, it just felt unfinished,

@MsHalcyon2

This, right here. I think part of why Xisuma drew fire vs the Scar example is because the tactics Xisuma used in trying to teach his lesson were extremely obvious. Scar's tactics on the other hand are actually fairly subtle. It's not quite as obvious on hermitcraft compared to for example Last Life but even the way he cuts together his videos is meant to make him look innocent. And a lot of viewers are young and not necessarily great at perceiving nuance, so they saw Xisuma's tactics but missed the lesson. They probably miss Scar's tactics entirely. There's another comment on this video from a dad who actually did use the Evil X storyline as a teachable moment for his son. If more parents had engaged with the content and their children that way, then I think Xisuma's goal would have been accomplished without the hate.

I too really enjoyed seeing how different hermits approached the custom items front--Scar making the personalized Boatem hats as gifts, Beef making sellable food items that weren't necessarily better as food than the regular farmable items but were aesthetically "fun" (and then people using them as decor), the Derpcoin as an alternate unbacked currency, Tango using it for making a disguise and pranking... If they stick around I think it'll be like the armor stands - some hermits really love working with armor stands, some never touch them, and that adds a fun dynamic (yes, yes, and a touch of lag) to builds - but also to interactions between members of the server, with services to be sold and purchased and bartered. Although I have seen lots of viewers saying they liked or didn't like various aspects of this season (and previous ones), I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone say anything other than More Yes Please More to "genuine" interactions between hermits (genuine being perhaps not the best word but I can't think of a better one to indicate not roleplay related which is more divided). Collaborations, purchases and sales, favors and building together, building advice etc are all part of that and I can see the custom texture tool sticking around in some form because it does encourage/facilitate more interactions without dramatically un-vanilla-ing the core gameplay...but I doubt it'd ever be as "central" as it was this season, with most hermits eyeballing it's potential and trying it out in different ways.

Probably havings an expiring date and not having shopping district or some other area for whole server were the causes for that. As far as your Evil X storyline goes I think it was one of the strongest parts of this seasons, and you are way too critical of yourself and doubting yourself too much. Many people here flat out say they didn't like the roleplaying/storyline stuff. But honestly, what Doc and Ren did this season is the best thing I've ever seen on Hermitcraft. The builds and technical exploits were incredible and the storyline is what tied all of it together. I also loved Cub's Moon McGee news segment to name another example. I've played Minecraft and watched videos about it for over 10 years and quite frankly, I'm glad things are not stagnating. I like the datapacks, I like storytelling and roleplaying. These things can be so much fun, the perception that it's just something younger viewers want is odd to me. Obviously no hermit should feel the need to partake in these things if it's not their style. That's perhaps the issue with the moon arc, it dominated everything else. But I've heard tango speak on stream about how he enjoyes creating videos because it allows him to tell stories. I know Doc would never let an opportunity go for some overly epic roleplaying. This is not something that should be discouraged.

The latest season was bittersweet, this season more than any felt like nobody really finished their bases, except maybe Geminitay, i loved what we got but i was pretty blindsided with how short it was, it felt like allot of "story lines" never got solved like doc and rens book adventures. We barely saw mainstays of Hermitcraft like Keralis, Iskall, stress and etho which was really sad. The evil empire felt a bit strange, but i liked it, boatem was amazing and i hope more hermits get together and build together because i feel that's the biggest strength of hermitcraft. Jo and cleo really only just got started on their mega base and i was really looking forward to see how it went. About the Derpcoin: I think what everyone seems to miss is the fact that, even if you were charging full price for stuff purchased with it, it's just another currency. Diamonds might be the more standard currency, but they only really have value if you need extra tools or armor; since the addition of Mending, you basically only really need about half a stack as long as you don't die in the void/lava (and even lava's not gonna destroy your stuff once you upgrade it to Netherite). The value of diamonds is close to being as imaginary and arbitrary as that of something like Derpcoin. So, it's no more a scam than paying in nearly-useless diamonds for something valuable like redstone components or concrete blocks is, which is to say it isn't a scam at all -- the value comes from the fact that people will use it for trade.
@ScooterinAB
@ScooterinAB 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. And I don't see the derpcoin being any different from people buying each other's stock and reselling it, or covering up each other' s shops so they can't get sales. It was so clearly a bit, and I feel bad for anyone who got upset over it. As for the diamond economy, it's one of the only blocks/items that can't be fabricated. I thought years ago about a redstone or gold economy so that diamonds could be saved for gear, but that would just get abused by some people building farms, making the currency valueless. Emeralds are clearly how for that reason, given how easy it is to abuse that. But in a game where you can spend hours and hours farming (manually or via automation), not currency is going to hold its value for long.
@ScooterinAB
@ScooterinAB 2 жыл бұрын
@James Sturm No. People put value on diamonds in Minecraft because they can only be mined or found. They are not a renewable resource. They cannot be fabricated from nothing by way of a mob farm or villager treading. This has absolutely nothing to do with real world fuckery regarding diamonds.
@ScooterinAB
@ScooterinAB 2 жыл бұрын
@James Sturm I have to disagree. Netherite is more valuable. It's just that by the time people get to that point, they have the ability to blast away to look for it. It's rare, but easier to find. Plus there's also the fact that calling trade in Hermitcraft an economy is probably not accurate, since the value of things is trivial. On other servers, the market means more, but I wonder how much the pricing actually matters here.
@ScooterinAB
@ScooterinAB 2 жыл бұрын

While some may think his independence is somewhat extreme, I think Etho is really wise when it comes to continuously making the game fun for himself and keeping his videos exciting based on what is happening in them, such as his new modded series, as opposed to how he’s making them. I mention him because his way of playing is practically opposite to the way you played during season 8, with the added complications of the story and the community building and whatnot. When creators sacrifice too much of themselves, they lose some of what made people like them in the first place. I’ve been watching Etho since I was 13, and I’m 22 now. He hasn’t gotten stale. Anyone that tried to reinvent the wheel and overcomplicate the very form of minecraft youtube videos, got shallow and uninteresting (though I’m sure the goal was to become deeper and more interesting). The only gripe I have for Etho is his limited uploads, but it is necessary for the quality of the content. I think if you have to sacrifice content in favor of yourself, while the benefits may not be apparent, it will be beneficial to your audience. You enjoying the game is what people want.

The proximity chat was the best thing that has ever happened to Hermitcraft, though, because I think the strength of the series is interaction between Hermits. Proximity makes it so that reactions to each other and collaboration is very organic and natural. People rocking up on each other and startling one another or seeing something surprising feels much more authentic, and it adds a lot of novelty and interest in. i personally enjoy storylines and scripted roleplaying a lot, however, i felt like it didnt match hermitcraft that much. im always excited when something turns out to be bigger than just some builds or pranks, but on season 8 it felt like its happened "too often'." i've assimilated hermitcraft with a chill, building smp thats very "meta" - we know that its a game and if they ever tell a story, its not supposed to be immersive like a series or a movie, and the enjoyment of the game itself and hanging out building and having fun comes before a higher scripted fantastical arc. The big moon thing didnt grow on me (haha) ever since the start and it got more and more and more "meh" the bigger it got, because it was what everyone was talking about constantly. it felt like everything went to a hault just for this one very not meta roleplay, and thats completely fair, after all it was the ending of the season, but its definetly something i wouldnt like to see more than once. you said it perfectly when you say that you dont want to need to have a motive when doing something, you want to do it just because its fun, and i feel like thats the whole mindset when engaging with hermitcraft. i think everyone has mixed feelings about this one season, but im personally all for experimenting outside our confort zone even when it doesnt work out, because then we are absolutely sure of what works and what doesnt.

I was looking forward to so many projects and ideas being fully realized so it was kind of a bummer seeing them end so short. Other then that I liked the whole moon plot even if it steered from vanilla and honestly steering from vanilla gameplay is fine in my book as long as it’s purely aesthetic and doesn’t affect the main game. The thing I like about Hermitcraft is that the stories usually are secondary and that it is still made clear that the whole bit is still "friends in a private server." I don't like watching other SMP series because some of them employ very forced storylines, where its less about playing Minecraft but more as people playing characters. I like the stories to be intertwined with playing Minecraft and have most of the players in the SMP to be just themselves-there is nothing wrong about playing a character, just don't make it your entire gimmick. Watching Hermitcraft makes me feel cozy, since its literally just friends playing on a server. It's the same kind of cozy when playing our private server. While the stories are fun to see get resolved, it never felt too forced, its more geared towards funny interactions than anything, like when you're in a big friend group and a situation causes 2 unlikely people in that friend group to interact and make the bond stronger.

I'm only watching for the last three seasons as well and although a lot of Hermits didn't enjoy the early ending (reasonably so) I felt like the whole vibe of this season was outstanding. Like really lively and wholesome - and although the actual server-wide event was missing (still could have happend, had the season lasted longer, tho) the whole server felt really tied together and much closer than during previous seasons. Everyone on one continent, proximity chat, custom textures and sometimes adding a bit of epicness were really great additions and I would really like them to stay. I think we saw Hermits growing exceptionally outside their comfort zone, pushing Minecraft to its boundaries, e. g. builds that were designed past superficial aesthetics but creating a deeper impression as an ensemble, that's just incredible. In the end though, does all of this really matter? Hermitcraft I feel like is not about pleasing the audience. It's about minecrafters doing crazy stuff for fun and enjoying time among friends - who just happen to have an insane audience; and as long as that's the foundation for everything that happens on the server, it will be amazing.

One of my biggest laments about the end of S8 was that we didn't get to see the fallout of the collapse of the derpcoin... so much time setting up those dominos, no time at all to watch them fall. And I must say I appreciated very much what you were doing with derpcoin as a teaching tool, I found it very well put together - but all we saw was how it got set up, and none of the consequences. I think you got into that about how viewers were throwing hate at you about it - they didn't get the story because they never got to see the end.

A highly coordinated season ending makes sense, as it lets everyone plan ahead, collaborate, and release at the same time. The finale was great. Everything else... I think letting things happen naturally with a "yes, and" attitude is best - like how the civil war turned out. The custom textures are great but only in small measures (maybe limit it to one or two per Hermit). The moment Derpcoin was introduced I got what you were doing - Doc and Beef did similar stories in S7 with loansharking and nobody minded. Not sure why. I think you did great work and should feel proud of your accomplishments.

It was awesome to see your effort, even being out of your comfort zone trying with stories. There's always people that enjoy if they understand where it's coming from, and you even attracted attention from other major players in the community. Whether intentional or not, sometimes things get interesting when lore gets possibly found from the strong lore seekers.

I enjoyed season eight, but I also felt that the "role play" became too much of the focus in some of the videos, especially near the end. But I understood why and still got a lot of enjoyment out of it. For me personally, the animation is fine when sprinkled in, but should only be used sparingly if at all. This is not meant to be criticism, at least not "bad criticism". I think you all did a great job, just sharing my preferences that others may not agree with. Which is fine.

I was confused that the season actually ended. At the beginning Mumbo said anything built off island will be reset which maybe was the original plan or a setup within the story but it still would have been cool to see them expand out from the island after the update. Still I loved the wacky fun all the storylines became and it was a planned end instead of a sudden unexpected cut off to the season

Man Xisuma, you are the coolest dude Ive seen no matter what you're aways trying to think about things on a different evel that I could never comprehend I love your so much for all the content you produce, and may I just say I love these Xisuma says talks, they give me a greater insight to the creater I love and how he is copying with things. Never change X, you are my role model, my entertainer, and my entire childhood wrapped up in a beautiful bundle. Thank You so much for all the work you do and even though it often times it gets unnoticed there is many of us out there that really can see how much time you put into your videos to other creators who are only looking to grow/cheat upon the algorithm.

odly enough, the whole thing you did with the EvilX story line was what made me start watching you, and I went back and watched your previous seasons and I'm looking forward to see what you do in season 9. I enjoy most of the hermits, rping or not , but I do love it when you guys interact on the server and I can understand why some hermits need the rping while playing, it helps their content and keeps them going. Ive loved this season

I think a generally longer season might balance the story/ roleplay vs let's play aspects of a season a bit more. But it is understandable why they opted for a shorter season this time. Also I thought the evil x story was great and quite educational but it is sad it wasn't always perceived the way it was intended. I do hope this doesn't discourage X from implementing other story features like this in the future if that is still something hes interested in :)

Yeah people who blamed X for doing that is like hating an actor himself just because he plays a villain in a film. I really think the morals behind the story should be told to the younger audience(or anyone who doesn't get that), even hopefully with the help of other hermits.

Absolutely agree. I think the story/lore wasn't the issue nor was it too "scripted" but the problem was that due to how short the season was it cause an issue with balancing the story with let's play like you said. Imo, season 6 had the exact opposite problem. I loved season 6 but towards the end it dragged on with no real story or goal and it felt like the end was disconnected whereas in season 8 the story really helped to lead to a clean (although rushed) ending. So really, I feel like this new season wasn't bad, it just needs more balance with the aspects that make hermitcraft, hermitcraft.

I must say I truly respect and appreciate your transparency with how this season went for you. I had no idea it affected you this way with all the negativity. Props to you for seeing it through and growing from it. Much was learned from the Hermits and the Fans this season. Can't wait for the next, and many many more!

For my two cents, I loved this season 8. The interactions between the hermits was the best part, as it always is. I think the interactions drive the "natural" storylines, like Civil War, the Mycelium resistance, the BTM vs. Big Eyes vs. RenDoc pranks. Zed and his experiments on the other Hermits in his Chamber. Joe and Cleo play off each other well too. Honestly, if you do what you love, and the love of that shines through, people will feel that and enjoy it.
