Up to 170,000 people who have had hernia mesh implants in England in the past six years could face complications, this programme has found.
In that time, there have been about 570,000 such operations and the complication rate is said to be 12-30%.
Some patients have been left unable to walk or work, others left suicidal.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency continues to back the use of hernia mesh.
Anna Collinson reports.

@@nigelwilliams9307 Indeed! Although there seems to be less risky operations, that would cost a little bit more (non mesh ones) like Shouldice and Desarda, but there doesn't seem to be one in the UK that performs that (only in Germany for what I've researched). I only hear good things about them. NHS should get trained on them, though I doubt they will as it is economically not attractive to them.

As someone who was 20 just got out of the military when I had the mesh put in my body, my life has been completely ruined because of the Bard mesh. What's worse than even the pain is the fact that my government (Good ole USA) keeps allowing these companies continuance after continuance, there's ZERO pain control unless you purchase heroin (fentanyl) on the street. These pharmaceutical and medical industries deserve a special place in hell. If there were any justice they would have to live the rest of their lives in pain with every doctor pretending to care only to just shrug their shoulders and tell you to do what you can do. These companies are purposely trying to outlive the lawsuits and the amount of people killing themselves it's probably a strategy that's working well.

Sometimes you have to give it a break for a while and use something else. After a while you can use it again. Definitely vaporize and use a high THC product. FORGET CBD. CBD is not psychoactive. People whoose pain gets any better with CBD is experiencing a placebo. effect. I actually don't care. If the pain is gone, the pain is gone.

I have chronic pain from inguinal hernia repair in the Netherlands in 2019. I’ve mentioned this to my previous Dutch and French family doctors who indicated mesh problems are extremely rare and should’t be an issue. Meanwhile I’ve stopped yoga, and running, I need to move my right leg back to bend forward, I have a sharp inguinal pain when turning a corner when going up the stairs, and have difficulty driving. My right hip now needs replacement and my right thigh has shrunk in circumference by 5cm. I’m hoping the hip replacement fixes most of my problem, and I’m starting to worry that the mesh may be the root cause of all my problems. Thanks for sharing - hopefully the doctors will start taking these mesh issues more seriously in the future.

Nope. twenty-five years of chronic pain, and low temperature from waist down, body temperature hovers around 35C, now I'm hypothermic and have Raynaud's, one teste is dying. They said, "all we can do is go in and redo it; we're not going to do that." Great! Canadian health care, at its best. Someday, someone will help us. My crotch feels deathly cold on the side of the mesh, and when it gets that way I throw up. I have to use heating pads and hot water bottles when seated because the blood doesn't get there, and there are shrunken, black veins visible, and arteries that are solid to palpate, they are solid blocks of scar. I'm sitting on a heating pad as I write this, even though my room temperature is 36C from my waist down, ICE COLD and my feet feel like they are in ice water all the time. I have to keep moving...

I had a hernia repair about 5 years ago, I'm currently in a law suit process as a month after the surgery I ended up getting an infection, going in an out of the drs an er to be ignored, treated as a pill seeker for narcotics etc. 6 months later I ended up in the hospital for a week sent home with a drain tube to drain the infection an a pic line to administer my own antibiotic at home the 9th month I had surgery to remove the mesh an weight loss surgeon. I was to have a leather based mesh placed when I got to a certain weight. I had my last hernia repair in March of 2021 an instead of following the mesh recommended from the previous surgeon, the surgeon I had this time put in the plastic stuff an I've been having issues. This surgeon who is not a plastic surgeon supposably removed 3-5 pounds of extra skin an fat an a tummy tuck but I'm seeing a plastic surgeon elsewhere and he questioned the surgeon I had an why he did things how he did etc. Prayers to those of you who have complications still cause it sucks‼️

Now, two years later, the epigastric hernia has recurred, but I'm opting not to undergo another surgery. I've been advised to avoid straining the abdominal area, which limits my ability to exercise. 100.000 seems like a low-ball estimate. I had debilitating chronic pain for 16 years and was lucky enough to find a surgeon to remove it. I now have no chronic pain, just a little soreness from the incision (and the surgery was only two weeks ago). I no longer need any pain medication either. I traveled 1700 miles for the surgery and I would have gone further. The surgery took 5 hours as the mesh was stuck to everything (spermatic cord, nerves, and intestine). After this long removal mesh surgery I had a complication that required a second ER surgery just two days later. Regardless, I now feel like a million bucks compared to how I felt before the mesh was removed. Awareness of how bad synthetic mesh can be for a patient is non-existent in the medical community. This needs to change. My synthetic mesh worked fine for three years until the complications started. Almost every doctor I met with during that time told me that it couldn't be the mesh. They will never understand unless they try the product themselves and their body responds poorly to it (like mine did).

@@everydayeasyrecipes2650 I just had my right inguinal mesh removed two and a half weeks ago and I no longer have ANY chronic pain. Additionally, I stopped all pain medicine and I only have a little soreness from where the new incision is. I did have a serious complication immediately following the surgery (bowel loop and obstruction) that required an immediate second surgery, so I will admit there are some serious risks with getting the mesh removed. My mesh was entangled in my intestine, spermatic cord, and nerves and required a 5 hour surgery to remove. Consider the risks before getting it out but I need to spread the word that the mesh was my ENTIRE problem. My urinary problems have gone away as well. Additionally, my blood pressure came down considerably and I no longer have leg pain. PM me if you or anyone needs the name of my surgeon.

I had laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (with a mesh) six (6) months [not days/weeks] ago and it has been horrible. My condition is actually worse than before the surgery. The mesh feels like a piece of sandpaper was surgically implanted inside of my body and the area where the hernia was a half year ago is still painful and swollen. My right testicle has been swollen and inflamed and is still approximately 100% larger than my left testicle. My condition is worse because of the pain and aching associated with my testicle being affected as opposed to just the less sensitive abdominal material that would occasionally protrude though my abdominal wall. My condition is affecting my activity level. I cannot walk for extended periods of time before the aching spreads to my lower belly area causing an upset stomach and ultimately headaches. I am dealing with chaffing because of the abnormal size of my right testicle. I can no longer complete a full yoga workout, ride a bike or jog/run and this has caused my physical condition to continually decline since the surgery. I have lost notable muscle mass, flexibility and my energy level is continually lessening. I am considering have the testicle removed.

In my total ignorance I felt that it would be easier for the surgeon to place the mesh correctly that way. It went well ( although I didn't realise how long it would take to heal up and for me to regain sensation in that area after the nerves were cut - over a year). Apart from a few dull twinges now and then I seem to be ok and I wonder how it is possible to be precise with that mesh when you can't actually see it properly.

The current surgical meshes being used have not been FDA approved. The current meshes are only being used under the 501 (k) approval process. Bio-absorbable tacks are also not FDA approved and are causing major problems. This whole surgical mesh industry is a scam.

I'm in the same boat but I'm finally getting this terrible mesh product removed. My mesh worked initially but only for three years. Then it failed. Since the failure, I have had 16 years of pain and not one doctor or Urologist thought my issues could be coming from mesh. They're just not educated within this area yet. Consider the risks before getting it out but I need to spread the word that the mesh was my ENTIRE problem (and it's likely yours). My urinary problems have gone away as well. Additionally, my blood pressure came down considerably and I no longer have leg pain. PM me if you need the name of my surgeon.

Hey, checking in. May I ask what you ended up doing?
@Noegzit
@Noegzit 3 ай бұрын
@@wes8246Sure. I went through Biohernia services to get in touch with Dr. Martin Wiese who operates in Kelkheim, Germany. Kelkheim is a small town near Frankfurt airport, which is very convenient. I was finally operated on by this very friendly and experienced surgeon last year. He’s German but also speaks English and French. He did a Shouldice using both permanent and bio-absorbable sutures. My surgeon in France could have operated on me with a Shouldice technique too but, as most of the surgeons, he does not practice this type of surgery regularly. He told me he made only three Shouldice on previous year and it was the same for all the other surgeons in my country (and apparently, it's the same in many other countries from what I see). I guess that as they mostly often implant meshes, they do this Shouldice technique very rarely when Dr. Wiese and another surgeon near Berlin make hundreds every year. We already eat, drink and inhale too much plastic. We can even absorb it directly through the skin. A recent study showed that we have microplastics in atherosclerotic plaques. So, there is no need to add more plastic in our body by implanting a mesh in our belly. I assume it's simpler for the surgeons and financially benefits both the surgeons and the mesh vendors but don't necessarily benefit the patients. Unless there are medical reasons, like being obese with a big, distended belly, it's best to avoid the mesh surgery... It's my opinion, not a medical advice. Before booking a flight to Frankfurt or Berlin, consult your GP or your surgeon and explain you are "a bit" reluctant to have a mesh implanted in your abdomen. Ask your surgeon how often he uses non-mesh techniques to repair hernia. Even if you feel very fine a couple of months after the surgery, you are not. The wound needs way more time to totally heal. Don't do stupid things like heavy squats or, like I did, a high jump taking off on the wrong leg! If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Consider the risks before getting it out but I need to spread the word that the mesh was my ENTIRE problem (and it's likely yours). My urinary problems have gone away as well. Additionally, my blood pressure came down considerably and I no longer have leg pain. PM me if you need the name of my surgeon.

My mesh worked well for three years.... then one day I moved wrong. After that I suffered from 16 years of chronic pain seeing hundreds of doctors who told me that the pain was in my head. The mesh, over time, attached itself to other parts of my body. In my case, it had entrapped my "man" parts, intestines, and femoral artery. The chronic pain stopped when I was finally able to find a skilled surgeon to remove the mesh. That surgery was also dangerous as I ended up with bowel obstruction (which they repaired). I still have to have a mesh in me but now I have a biological mesh (pig skin). Maybe my plastic mesh problem was a fluke, but I told myself prior to surgery that if I survived it, I would let others know what happened to me.

Hi I had mesh repair 3 weeks ago today and no issues, the mesh used today has been revised and improved over the years. You need to research a good doctor ( surgeon ) for this procedure before going ahead with it. When people have complications such as chronic pain or discomfort you need to look at the surgeon on how the procedure was done,yes there are risks of nerve damage etc but very low rates,and also take into account how many years experience the surgeon had at the time etc etc. All these things need to be considered. I can only speak from my own personal experience which Ive had no mesh issues.

When David said he was always a big bloke a strong guy~ I can understand. It's very hard to not be able to do the things you once did~especially when your still young enough to do them. I have always lifted weights, not only for heath, but for size and shape, my self esteem is directly tied to my body. I'm scheduled for hernia repair surgery in a week ~ after seeing this, IM SCARED TO DEATH. The thought of losing size and going through life being a scrawny geek with women laughing at me is a horrific thought.

Happened to me. I had 2 hernias with mesh and now the complications on the left side which are ignored. The gains stay but this just sucks. If I knew I would go without mesh aa it is much easier to get another hernia surgery if it reccurs rather than remove the mesh.

I’ve been doing at least 2-3 hernia surgery per week for last 5 years and had one one complication till date. A diabetic patient developed seroma. Key here is minimising unnecessary tissue handling, use of GA over LA to get good muscle relaxation and exposure during surgery , asking patients not to indulge in strenuous activity for first 3 months after surgery to let the mesh settle in with surrounding tissue , use ultra light weight and microporous mesh, use less suturing to fix mesh ( reducing risk of taking bites on sensitive tissue causing chronic pain post operative period ), making sure the mesh is tension free and wrinkled (so it doesn’t hamper patient mobility) and lastly I prefer tissue repair over mesh whenever there is good strength in the tissue of the patient.

My mesh has caused me heart palpations and general chronic pain. I am debating having surgery to remove the screws holding the mesh in, and possibly getting the mesh out. The problem is they now say the mesh has now grown into my tissue, so I am not sure what I can do. It is crazy they let this continue with the complication rates.

This video was made 5 years ago, how is the situation now? Has it been improved a lot? What is the most advanced way available now for treating hernia? I'm going to have this surgery a week later. My doctor suggested I choose bio-absorbable mesh and fixing material to keep the mesh in place, which will cost $3k+. My hernia openning is 0.8cm. I am so scared now that I've heard so many defects about mesh usage.

Do you have any other health issues? Arthritis? Heart problems? The side effects of mesh aren't all localized. As it works by creating an inflammatory response in the body to strengten the repair, many experience systemic inflammatory issues like the above. If you're Scott-free, I'm happy for you. But if you're experiencing systematic inflammatory symptoms, know that it may be related to the inflammatory response to the mesh and these conditions are very, very common in mesh patients. Many of us have been diagnosed with 'autoimmune conditions' like lupus.

Mesh removal is a complex surgery but it's a common procedure nowadays . You should search for a experienced surgeon who is dealing with that but this redo surgery is not free from risks. So, consider for surgery if benefit is noticible than post operative complications.

@@muslimfrombaku triple nurotomy/neurolysis & as a result of that some symptoms are common like numbness & paresthesia(abnormal sensation & tingling) over thighs, scrotum and groin area. Over the period some symptoms will subside, so, it's not big issue. The main issues related to this type of redo surgery are testicular vessel & injury to cord structures, because those are already integrated to mesh due to fibrous tissue growth, if injured then it may lead to compromised testicular blood supply & subsequently testicular ischemia/atrophy.Other complications are risks of injury to major blood vessels but a experience & skilled surgeon is able to minimize the risk. Once mesh is removed then usually recommended for non mesh tissue repair at the same procedure(if surrounding tissues are not badly effected due to previous scar). This type of surgery takes more time & hospital stay.
