I also think HOMM2 is more fun to play, not just because the AI is more brutal but also because I prefer the art direction and more minimalist approach to combat. Factions and units are quite unbalanced but they're easy to understand what they do and how to play them and encourage you to be creative to get the most out of them. Modern strategy games including HOMM3 are better balanced because they're designed with online play in mind, but doing so we lost something along the way. I think there's a lot to say about 90's PC strategy games that were specifically made for single player and having wildly asymmetrical factions with distinct flavors that gave endless replay possibilities was considered more important than having perfectly balanced gameplay.

I think I have to consider that at this time, the Internet was just starting to take off. There weren't any gameplay videos, no concise guides to help you out, nor any real feedback as far as help goes. You were on your own. I used to play a lot of Lucasarts and Sierra adventure games, when you only had telephone help lines these games were much harder. I think the same goes with strategy games, I loved the original Command & Conquer and it literally kicked my butt towards the end of it. Unless it's some indie game or is tailored to be difficult, most modern day games are easier to finish. Ubisoft is especially guilty for making games that are ridiculously easy, and they guide you through every step of the way.

In homm 1 and 2 the AI was brutal cause cheat a Lot, as 90% of mobs joining and obelisk bonus ro get the golden artifact

I just played an interesting map in this game (just started playing it from gog). It is called ghost planet. Maybe you can check it out. The start is difficult even on normal. I am liking this game more than heroes 3. I love the atmosphere!

Isn't it worth it to use single units to consume the enemy retaliation like in HoMM3? E.g. at 31:37, wouldn't it be better to let the sacrifice the wolf to the dwarves so that ogres can attack without reatliation?

This map is reaaally hard in impossible, i have done it rushing with barbarian... there is another to do like that with barbarian in original heroes 2 (dont remember the name, its a castle near the sea, mini map) good job!

Hi AbsoluteZero, I had a quick look at how you played. I started playing this game when it was released in 1996, 25 years ago.....but stopped after 3 years...this video has brought me back to the old days. Thanks for that. However, as a seasoned player (I had pretty much played every scenario at the impossible level and had black dragon in all my rankings. I stopped playing because I couldn't be challenged any further) , I'll like to make a couple of suggestions if you don't mind. You should always prioritise building the habitats of your armies in your castles at every turn in order to maximise their production by the end of each week. I noticed, at the start that you tend to buy heroes, rather than investing them in your monsters production. Also, check out the resources needed for these monsters' habitats and go straight to the mines to get them as they generate new supply at every turn. Also, do you know where I can purchase this game for Mac?

why do you want to sacrifice troops when there is a fight comming i dont get that, handle the enemy hero first then handle other combats after you are weakening youreself it dont make any sense to me but im looking and try to find a new way to think

Why is the town music so weird? The other sounds are normal, but all the towns have a different bgm from the ones I know. Was there a difference between American and European releases or something?

12:33 thats your mistake and the reason why your game will last forever i play 2 maps on expert (impossible)and pyramid will be my 3rd and i dont upgrade any of my buildings bcs its a waste of money i usually based around what the bot build for me :) and 200 iq usually hire a multiple heroes pick their army and flee them after first combat what i could get and then the troops in this hero and hero will back to the tawern reset :)

One little tip is that, saving the game when you've already done the turn doesn't really do you any good almost. It overwrites the previous save and you could potentially get into a dilemma where you can't make a right move.
