Very thorough review! Regarding the box organization, I don't know if this applies to the individual boxes, but in the grail box, each tray has a faint letter and number designation. For example, i1-7 are the inferno units level 1-7, i8-9 are the heroes, and i10 is the town. Just another thing that will help you if you're a die-hard fan of the computer game!

Shuffling cards is not fun, especially when you do it every 30 seconds.

Hey this was super thorough and well produced, really good job. Held my intention even though I’ve already decided to skip this one. One point about the miniatures though. Yes, they have slight gaps where the minis are preassembled. However, I can tell you that the ones in HOMM 3 are about bang average in the industry when it comes to how egregious those gaps are. It’s simply the price we pay for preassembled miniatures. If you want a much easier fix than green stuff, to help make the gaps less noticeable, I’d recommend sprue glue. This is simply extra thin plastic glue with some plastic mixed in to thicken it up. It will help blur the edges of those gaps together. Only problem is if you don’t paint it after it might leave a more satin finish than the miniature itself. The colour of plastic used to make it also matters. If it doesn’t roughly match the miniature plastic, it might stand out a little. Anyways, real high production quality on this. Will keep an eye on your channel!

We have more or less the same issues and satisfactions of the physical components overall, especially when it came to the cardboard components. When it comes to the rules, I found them rather easy, except when it came to the Specialities. Some are litteral spells, like Ring of Frost, or Resurrection, and when they said they're NOT affected by Schools of Magic cards, I kind of lost it. They even have the school icon they're associated with, so why can't they be affected? Thankfully, the game is very much flexible when it comes to ruling so we just decided it would be affected, as long as we can't see how broken it is. It's still a very RNG dependant set up, so we don't see the issue. All in all, this is one of my favorite games right now, along with the Witcher Old World when it comes to heavy board games. And I'm definitely going to back the expansions coming up!

Very good video with the sound a little bit too loud. I agree with your concerns on the game and I haven´t yet decided, if I want to keep the game or not. As a Heroes enthusiast I was completly hyped when the kickstarter came out and I just had to have it. Now it´s a mixed bag of emotions. It´s really a big game, many boxes and many hours. A three player game took us about 8 hours and we spent a lot of time on looking for answers to our questions, discussing rules and creating suiteable house rules. The rule book really is a mess and my copy is now as well after flipping the pages back and forth over and over. The game is fun though and feels like player heroes, but there are many details, that have their problems. You are always short on resources so in none of the games I played so far did any player build the gold recruiting building. Even if we had, no one would have had the money to recruit any of these gold units. Upgrading them is ridiculously expensive, like you need 2 resource rounds to upgrade one of these units which means 4 rounds in total. I think no one ever used their mage guild, because the 5 gold for the spell is better spent on units or buildings. The tree of experience: way too expensive and so on. And all these cards .. There are piles of spells and aditional skills you could use but only 2 or 3 get drawn in the entire game. The minis look great but you don´t really need them and we often forgot them. The best experience I had so far was a 2 player game with just the base game. The different factions where always one of the strongest part of the game but with the board game it also ads a lot of box management. So, on the one hand it is a nerds dream come true, on the other hand it can be a real pita.

Interesting review. While I see some of the points you made regarding gameplay and the hardships caused by translating a video game to the tabletop, I feel other criticism or discomfort to be almost non-existent. Especially in the rulebook department. If something happens during the game which the rulebook doesn't speak about specifically, you and your playing partner(s) have the freedom to decide on what you think is the most logical step going forward. It's that simple. I personally would never demand from such a complex game to be able to give answers to every single one of my questions. I can easily accept that there might be scenarios where the rulebook can only give me guidelines, and I am the one who decides on what to do. Another seemingly problematic bit was about forgetting all the tiny things you have to do manually. Yeah, for a game as extensive as this, that doesn't strike me as a surprise. But the more you play, the more chances you will have to remind yourself on what things you should be doing. Sooner or later you will remember them. But if you forgot to retalite for instance and the next unit has already taken its turn, too bad. Next time, you will pay more attention, but there's no going back to previous steps. And for my last thought, if the game is too hard to comprehend for some players, it's a clear indicator, that Heroes is not the right boardgame for them. Overall, I don't think there are many changes that are truly necessary.

Great review. I mostly agree with you. The Rulebook is really not good, especially when playing with expansions. Waayyy too many Books. I printed a overview of the map tiles from BGG,it is almost a must. Still, I still don't feel the bad rulebook is a big issue for me because i know most rules because they were asked on Archon's Discord (still bad for most people). But my biggest issue is the bad building balance (or generally Ressource balance). Pretty much all town special buildings are way too expensive and their effects are often even just bad. In the end you try to rush the dwellings and citadel to get better units (depending on playstyle, Mage Guild and City Hall too). Still like the game but it has a lot of issues. P.s: The Retail version not including a lot of additional Heroes (stretch goals) and the Tower faction is also not great.

I know there are many attempts to transform video games into board games, but the general experience is: sounds good in theory, does not work in practice. I think in case of HoMaM 3 they wanted too much and a too complex system to be faithful to the PC counterpart, but apparently the general result is not good as it sounded. However, what I really like is the *Northgard: Uncharted Lands* board game. If you don't know, the original is a survival-RTS game, available on steam. But I like even more the board game version, which is still complex, still a bit difficult to learn every rule, but not that the gameplay is still not that slow or complicated that you lose interest in the game, because the developers simplified the original just enough to make it suitable for a board game. Also the good balance between personal decision making and tactics and the unpredictability of RNG makes the game enjoyable on long term because it doesn't become repetitive. Search for info, or even give it a try if you are interested. Also feel free to ask me for more information.
