La capoeria desde sus inicios fue usada como un arte de defensa de los esclavos brasileños contra los esclavistas de la época Haciéndose pasar como un baile para aprovechar el elemento sorpresa y así derribar a los oponentes con golpes certeros a lugares sensibles. Actualmente la capoeria es practicada mayormente en Brasil el lugar donde nació esa arte marcial, ahí hacen torneos y se califican de acuerdo a los movimientos y acrobacias que hagan los participantes. La capoeria tiene movimientos que pueden aturdir al enemigo de un solo golpe, también se puede practicar como actividad recreativa ya que también es un baile.
