It was hard as FUCK and in the days of no internet this game was a literal nightmare lol. I liked it a whole lot, it was just so difficult and it's not intuitive in regards to what you're supposed to do and where you're supposed to go. For me for whatever god damn reason I could not get into the Sematary on some plays, thus making it impossible to advance. Classic though because I remember playing this as 6 year old in '91 and really loving playing it (despite the times it weirdly glitched where I couldn't advance).

This game was released for NES in late 1990 based on the horror film series of the same name. It was created by British-based developer Rare, known for games such as Slalom, Wizards & Warriors, R.C. Pro-Am, the Battletoads series, the Donkey Kong Country series, as well as licensed games such as Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, Hollywood Squares, Sesame Street, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, WWF WrestleMania, Beetlejuice, ports of Marble Madness, World Games, John Elway's Quarterback, California Games, Jordan vs. Bird: One on One, Silent Service, Iron "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road, Cabal, NARC, Arch Rivals, Pirates!, and Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat, handheld spin-offs like the Donkey Kong Land series, Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong 64 and the Banjo-Kazooie series, and published and distributed by LJN, who are infamous for releasing licensed games of very poor quality, especially on the NES. The Gameplay focused around the teenage player character traveling to different locations in Elm Street to find and destroy Freddy Krueger's bones, the only method of permanently killing him, all while attempting to keep their sleep meter from depleting. Additional teenagers can be controlled by up to 3 or 4 players with the use of the NES Four Score. When the bar is emptied, the character is transported to the Dream World where they can be openly attacked by Freddy and a multitude of super-powered enemies. To defend themselves, the character can collect tokens that can turn them into one of several special dream roles such as wizards and ninjas. Most if not all of the gameplay and story elements are directly lifted from the third movie in the series, The Dream Warriors. The game went through notable changes over the course of its development and, based on pre-release screenshots and publicity blurbs, was quite a different, more ambitious game. According to an advertisement featured in a 1988 issue of Nintendo Power, the original premise was that the player would control Freddy himself with the goal being to murder the teens attempting to find his bones. Freddy would be able to freely traverse the Dream World by warping through pipes, electrical outlets, and mirrors. According to the game magazines Nintendo Power and Nintendo of Europe, the original concept of this game varied greatly from what was eventually released. In the original game concept, the players would control Freddy Krueger and should kill the teenagers who were attempting to gather his scattered bones in order to rebury them. Follows the synopsis of the prototype version of the game: You ARE Freddy Krueger. A horde of obnoxious teenagers is trying to get rid of you by finding your scattered bones and burying them. The only way to stop them is to kill them. You can travel along Elm Street through the electrical and plumbing lines or step into a mirror and step in another room. The kids have weapons to battle you with and some of them even possess powerful "Dream Alter Egos" ...but if you can strike before they wake, they'll trouble you no more. So sharpen up your finger razors and get ready to slash, 'cause Freddy's here! After its initial announcement, the game's status was unknown until Fall 1989 when, in Nintendo Power #8, it was featured in an article about the NES Satellite peripheral. This time, the player character was simply an Elm Street teen. The article included two more screenshots from the prototype of what would become the title screen and one of Freddy fighting a group of kids, arguably still the player character by this point. Although LJN had apparently begun restructuring the game by 1989, the presence of these images, most of which include assets that would be used in the finished product such as the title screen, seem to imply that development had reached the point where the game's prototype build was mostly playable. It was delayed until 1990, which further implies retooling on Rare and LJN's part. No official explanation has been given for such a radical change, but considering Nintendo's reputation for producing family-friendly games and the financial failures contributed by earlier licensed horror games The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween on the Atari 2600 (many game stores refused to stock the former due to the fact that the killer was playable), it's entirely possible that either Nintendo or LJN ordered Rare to remake the game with a safer concept to avoid drawing controversy. Aside from the screenshots and articles listed, there is little other information on the original version of the game. While LJN has been defunct since 2000, it's possible that Rare or someone who worked on the game has a copy of the prototype.

Honestly, I always had fun with this game. I think it's definitely one of the better games LJN published. I would definitely take this game any day over some of the other gross shit they published like say XMen or Back to the future. Regardless, I still find AVGN's video on this game hilarious, even if I don't agree with him.

Hell if this game had an official soundtrack I'd even spend $100 on it.

It does have a official soundtrack but it was release in japan only. Its very rare and sell for around 45$ to 65$ on auctions. I bought the soundtrack for batman on famicom since its my opinion that this game have some of the best bgm on the system. I also like the soundtrack of nightmare on elm street. All those soundtracks for sell are the famicom version of these games.

I only beat this game once because I used my brother's game genie. This and monster party are two of my favorite nes games from my collection.

Watching the title menu I was damn this is kinda of scary! Then the game started. Snakes and spiders? Cmon! It would be interesting to see a NOES game created by developers today using the same tech. Not the same computers or whatever but the same parameters I guess.

I’m fairly sure all NES games are the same game engine, with the characters and music switched over 😂 it’s always jump/shoot/avoid no matter what movie it is
