Loved this series (Rise of Phoenix’s ) -just wish they had stuck to the original (very happy) ending in the book which was so lovely and worked so well , instead of the appalling ending they had to suddenly tack on in the series when a regulation suddenly changed about how many episodes a series could have. Such a pity.

The original ending in the book was that the lead male became emperor, however after a while he faked his own death, with the knowledge of his younger brother who reluctantly took over as emperor. The lead male then joined the heroine. The last part is where the pair discuss the constant visits and requests for advice from the new emperor, sometimes at VERY inconvenient times - and says to the heroine ‘let’s run away’. 2. In this one the lead male becomes emperor, goes to collect the heroine to marry her,as she has agreed - only to find she has committed suicide. ( given everything that’s gone before, this ending makes no sense does it?) 3. The productions in China appear to be subject to various rules and regulations that appear to change at short notice. At one point the Chinese dramas were very long - 80 plus episodes was not unknown. Sometimes every episode was great, as in the Story of Yanxie Palace , but in too many episodes a lot was ‘filler’, which brought complaints. So the number of permitted episodes per drama was suddenly reduced by the regulations - and then reduced more - and then reduced even further. I think it’s down to a maximum of about 40 episodes now. As a result you will find series suddenly clearly chopped down as they have no choice but to cut planned lengths. Sequences suddenly end, characters disappear, references get made to something we haven’t seen, that clearly show scenes have been cut. As a result things suddenly get altered and hacked about, as with this where they cut the ending. Hope this helps.

@@bethzolin6046Question: Didn’t the regulation change to say you can only have a limited amount of episodes to be released per year? Basically they are telling these people to break the episodes to make Seasons, not just one long but~t season. And the seasons need to be released almost a year apart. We in the US are used to that. So if this series was to have 80 episodes they would be required to break it into, if 40 is max per year then 2 seasons or 4 seasons, 20 episodes per season. Or two seasons of 25, 3rd having 30; hypothetically. And quite honestly I think that would be better. This way they can spread the storyline out and not sacrifice quality for limited quantity. They could also flesh out the side stories this way.

Rise of Phoenix. Rest series except they had to alter the (very happy) ending in the book. Apparently there was a sudden change of rules about series length, which is why the ending of this series really grates. If you search on line you can find a summary of the book ending.
