I'm posting 30 years accumulation of my most interesting (worldwide) travel videos. Map link for this video is below, click SHOW MORE.
This event surprised me, and the rat! Warning, it's not a good outcome for the rat.
I was sitting on a bench (map view, to the right, looking left) when the heron walked out of the brush carrying the rat.
Several have asked where this happened, so here is a GoogleMap "street view" link:

@Terry Jd New Yorker here, Cats do roam everywhere. I see stray cats everyday and they are very friendly, my neighbor adopted one last year. But the rat population manages to keep up with them. I will admit i see more strays than rats, but it's very likely that the cats are just calmer around humans. I still see massive rats, and I've seen an increase in them last year. There might be a reasons for this tho. People love feeding the strays, so they might not want to hunt rats, or the rats are simply keeping up with them. I've actually seen strays hunt and eat rats but they aren't killing them off.

Yeah, if there were more predators in New York, it may help but, again, it's a huge city with little to no nature (besides parks) and ginormous buildings that could pose a problem for birds of prey or raptors

a wildlife biologist explained this behavior to me years ago. predators will sometimes test repeatedly to be sure their next meal has completely expired before gulping it down. they do this so their meal doesn't wake up in the gullet and try to claw or bite their way out. it may look gruesome but to the heron, this is a self-protective action, not tormenting or torturing the rat. I watched a roadrunner do the same to a small rabbit years ago in my back yard.

Heron's are VORACIOUS hunters. I'm quite sure this rat was biting with all it's strength on that Heron's beak. But getting stabbed repeatedly by essentially a dagger is going to spell curtains for that rat sooner or later as it eventually did. I've been in the avian field now for nearly 30yrs having worked "hands on" with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey and Budgies to Macaws. And i've seen my fair share of Heron killings while out in the field. I've seen them tackle an kill ducklings, turtles, frogs, rats, other small to medium sized shore birds, and even snakes. There beaks are EXTREMELY powerful and mighty long and sharp so they can make kills on these prey items very easily. Just as well as a Bird of Prey does using it's talons.

Well, it's a rather tele-shot, so could very well be people did see it, but you don't see their reaction on camera. On the other hand: it's Amsterdam. Even my first girlfriend, who was from a more rural area while I live in a small city 18 km's above Amsterdam, thought I was a stranger to nature. On one of our walks in her neighbourhood, we encountered a nest of coots with ducklings. She started poking me: 'Look! Look!'. But familiar as I was with them (as we also got nests with ducklings of all kinds of birds basically in front of our house) I didn't see the special occassion she was referring to. So when I asked like 'What's so special?' she mentioned the ducklings. 'Uh yeah... right... what's so special about them?' 'Ducklings!' 'Uh yeah...I see 'em...' 'That must be something for you?' 'Uh... we get ducklings of all kinds of species all the time at my place as well?' She really thought that, being from a city, I was a complete stranger to animal life. But yeah, most people in the city don't care, don't look and take everything for granted, so the lack of interest does not surprise me ;) Quite close from my place, cows still make a farmland-procession on a daily basis (they either walk from one farmland to another via public roads or from farmland to their shelter). When that happens, the farmer opens the gates and quickly jumps on his bike to 'close' the ropes at other homes and farmland-entries along the road, and eventually gets a rope across the road to get them into the right direction. When that happens and cyclists get caught in the procession, you can always tell who's from the city and who's a more natural/rural kind of person: the city-people usually freeze at the side of the road, deadly afraid as they are of the cows that pass them, while in reality, opening your arms will make them bounce back in fear. It's also the city-people that usually keep the engines of their cars running and get really annoyed. More rural people will usually appreciate the scene and just stand there watching them in a relaxed manner. It's also those people that will turn their engine off and get out of their car to watch the cows pass them slowly. I always like to see them pass, slightly coaxed by the farmer who will usually gentle tap their backs or clap his hands to keep them moving along.
