My dog is getting surgery on both shoulders for OCD, should I also worry about his elbows? If so, when should I get a CT scan to get his elbows checked? Should I wait until he has recovered from OCD surgery?

Is elbow dysplasia the same as elbow subluxation? We have a 13 yr old chi-terrier mix and in the past year we've noticed when he stands his elbows swing far outward. He'll take a few steps like that but when he gets going his gait is ok. Should we be concerned? Due to other health issues - diabetes & Cushings - he cant be put under anesthesia for various tests and for anesthetic teeth cleaning (which worries us because we think he has trachea issues also).

My dog was dx with OA and grade 2 elbow dysplasia today at 4 years old. They suggested the synovetin. But 3k for a year, possibly longer is just to much for a temp fix. He also tipped scale at 102

Very informative. My dog was diagnosed with UAP at 10 months. He’s going to have surgery on both front elbows next week. I’m nervous! Would like to know more on after care like stem cell. Also, is swimming okay as part of his after recovery? He absolutely loves swimming. He’s 100 percent water dog. Thinking this form of exercise is less stress on his joints. Final question, what about nutrition? I feed him Origens Lg breed puppy, cooked chicken and steak, plus high quality vitamins. I just want to make certain I’m not missing anything. He’s incredibly intelligent. Plus unbelievably sweet. His trainers are blown away by him. Always saying he learns things immediately while their other dogs take weeks. I just want to give him the best life possible and overcome this diagnose if we can. Thank you! 🙏🐾💙

I have a Cane Corso who is 6 years old too. He got diagnosed with elbow dysplasia and arthritis last week. He has never had a limp leg or any kind of discomfort until a couple of months ago. We did an X-RAY scan and they diagnosed him pretty fast. They said that surgery is not possible because very little surgeons do the kind of operation that he needs. We are putting him on frequent injections of some kind of anti-pain drug. I will update if I see some changes! Hope that clears your questions! Do an immediate CT scan or x-ray photo of his front legs and go to the vet immediately!

It’s a genetic disorder so they always have elbow dysplasia. If it presents later in life it just means that joint pain has accumulated over a long period of time. It could be that a piece of the joint bone finally broke off. Kind of like a pebble in your shoe (but in the joint). When that happens you need to get that corrected ASAP because the ‘pebble’ (bone fragment) is just tearing up the cartilage and cartilage never repairs so you want to stop the damage/limit the damage as quickly as possible. My pup had the slightest change in his gate and it turned out it was ED. Very happy I got the surgery.
