Streamed 25th April 2024. Grey Herons nesting at Stocker’s Lake, Herts, UK. Three eggs all hatched between March 9th and 11th but one chick perished on March 17th. So there are now two, nearly fledged chicks in the nest.
Today the stream starts at 6.31am with the two chicks at the nest. Between 8.00 and 8.03 one of the chicks goes off the nest up the branch to the left. He does so again at 8.46, returning at 9.21. Between 9.59 and 10.00 the male visits the nest to feed the chicks. At 10.10, and at various other times during the day, a fledged juvenile from another nest perches nearby. The female visits to feed the chicks between 11.24 and 11.27 and then again between 14.13 and 14.18. On the second visit her arrival has the effect of dislodging the fledged juvenile from a nearby nest. At 16.21 he returns and stays until 16.42. Finally at 17.44 the male makes a further, flying visit.
During the course of this stream, with at least one of the two chicks wandering more and further from the nest, the camera is zoomed out in order to capture more of the action. This also reveals quite a lot of activity in or close to nearby nests, with one or two newly fledged chicks from elsewhere starting to move around.
