As a Swedish speaker, i noticed there are some wrong meaning. 1.För det jag bjuder så gärna doesnt mean (for that I would gladly offer you gifts) it would be more accurate " because i want to offer you very gladly."There are no gifts mentioned in that sentence. She says that she REALLY REALLY wants to offer him to marry her. 2. Som klingar utaf femton guldringar doesnt mean that it" sounds like fifteen gold rings" it is made of fifteen gold rings so "klingar" which is referred to when keys make noise so when sword hits the floor it makes that noise. It doesnt sound like fifteen gold rings, it is MADE out of 15 gold rings. 3. "Her mouth full of lies" this sentence i would say could be correctly translated. But if we translated it exactly like it is written (hon hade en falskeliger tunga) it would be "she had a false tongue". But it could be translated into mouth full of lies.

loved this folk song, especially this rendition. but not sure how to interpret it. the first half of the song paints the troll a deceitful. untrustworthy, figure and reinforces that by how the knight rejects her. but when the troll cries out she said "her plight would be over" as if he had loved her she would not be foul and deceitful. Is she a demonic monster trying to lead the knight to peril or repentant and wishing to be loved?

Just to add a little nuance, for those of you who can't understand Swedish: When the troll-woman runs away at the end crying, a more literal translation of what she says is that if she had been able to get the young man, she would have been able to avoid her (future) torment; this suggests that she understands that eternal punishment awaits her, but she thought that she could avoid it by seducing and marrying a Christian man---which is not really how it works, but you can't blame her for trying, I guess!

The Christian man in question had resolve, so he could've converted her and saved a soul from eternal damnation, instead of condemning her for being born into a tribe of pagans.

I think the thing is, trolls are believed to have no souls, as they are not human, so they wouldn't have eternal torment but eternal nothingness after death, but by marrying a human they could gain a soul and have eternal life. Unfortunately they try to do this through deception and bribery rather than a genuine desire to love or repent. They don't have eternal souls like humans, after all, only an earthly mind. They are more like very intelligent animals in that regard.

The song is simply amazing. Just the sound or rather the "feeling" of words is a pure pleasure (but maybe it's just an exotic of it for someone who comes from the family of slavic languages). Anyway, I remember that when I heard it for the first time I was really concerned if it's some pagan song that could be dangerous for the soul. But when I read the text I liked it even more. But for me the main melody, will be always an "Old Camp" from Gothic 1...

Hello brother, you can tell me If listen musics of other religions is Sin?
@XYZasw3 жыл бұрын
@@luizumhumano7111 in my opinion it's not a sin per se, but it comes with some danger. Especially if it's not just some neutral music but created by someone with different faith (for example Bach) but music created for religious purposes. The most obvious example is satanist music which was created to worship demons. But I think there is a lot of danger in pagan music too. Also the protestant songs brings a lot of danger but in a different way. They seem to worship the God but they can also mix truth with some minor lies. So, as I said it's not a sin but we should keep in mind that everything we listen to, watch, read etc. has some influence on us and in long term can lead us to false.

Ironically I thought this song was originally a Pagan Viking one. How wrong am i ! - It's origin is on a christian man refusing to marry a troll because she is not christian.

@@OggeViking This is not necessarily true. Poems were often sung and were the songs of the time. Völuspá is one example - beowulf i'm sure was another
@OggeViking3 жыл бұрын
@@romainvicta3076 We don't know that for sure either. What we can say for sure is that our main source (Poetic Edda) is from medieval times, and the rest is based on speculation. Beowulf on the other hand, is most likely older. But we still don't know if it was sung or if it was popular by any means. So I'm taking your claim of being "sure" of something with a grain of salt. I'll rather listen to the scholarly consensus and their debates.

My heart is gladdened by your return. Since we're in Advent, is there any chance for you to translate Catholic Christmas music from the Caribbean? Puerto Rico and Cuba both have beautiful Villancicos, which follow traditions dating all the way back to the 15th century. I'd love to see "Villancico Yaucono" from my home or "Si al ver en el oriente" written by the great composer Esteban Salas. Regardless of whether or not you choose to translate these pieces, I think you'll enjoy hearing them.

The temptations of the troll-woman are not too unlike the temptations Satan offered to Christ Himself. Ultimately, just as Satan falsely promised Christ the entire world if He would but fall down and worship Satan, so too does the troll offer riches to the noble knight if he will but abandon his faith for her, which is what the marriage to her really means.
