There were a ton of Germans who had their sentence gradually reduced from death by hanging to a couple of years of prison sentence. In my view all due to the fact that they needed the Western Germans in the Cold War and because the Germans were allowed to control judicial matters within their own country pretty quick after the war. If a whole people is complicit it's natural to become lenient I guess.

My grandmother with her mother was an inmate in Ravensbrück. She and her mother never told much about what they've witnessed there. Our family never even knew that they've been there. It was only known after an old teacher and hobby historian did research and wanted to do an interview my great grandmother about their time there and tell her she was able to get compensation for her time there. This was in the 80s oder 70s if I remember correctly. My mother once told me that my grandmother was only able to survive there by improvisation and helping each other out. A pity they didn't write down what they've witnessed but I guess they were just too traumatized and wanted to live on.

@vinny14210 ай бұрын
"They are in prison, why would they do anything other than good behaviour." Think about that question for a bit... Why would a person who has no regard for human life and who has killed somebody in cold blood behave well in prison when surrounded by hundreds of other people who have also killed? Why would a person who was too stupid to ever consider that they might get caught be clever enough to behave well in prison where the worst that can happen is that they get more jailtime when they misbehave? You are not criminally insane, you don't feel a need to kill, you are very aware of just how likely it is that you would get caught even if you did. Criminals don't.

The Nuremberg trials were a sham to an extent because many war criminals got away lightly for the horrific crimes that were committed. This was mainly because the Western allies needed these nazis alive so that they could learn their infamous methods from them. For example all the members of Japan's Unit 731 were recruited by the US government after the war so that the Americans could learn their bio warfare and torture methods, ignoring all the war crimes that those monsters did on innocent people including allied POWs. Likewise the same took place at Nuremburg. The only reason why the Nuremberg trials was to an extent able to execute some high ranking nazis was because of the involvement of the Soviet Union which wanted nothing but justice. If the Soviets were given full control of the trials, most of the war criminals would have been executed. That is a fact.
