Hey bro, I don't want to shit unnecessarily on this because it's great, and your music is generally great, but listening to it, I can't help but feel like it's all variation on the theme, with the theme never actually being introduced. I'm not sure, if I didn't already know this song's source material, I would really "get" all of your rhythmic inflections. Surely at least the first time the theme appears it shouldn't be so heavily rubato-feeling like it is here. I don't know your creative process, but I know I've made (what I consider to be) similar mistakes when I have introduced so much variation into a piece I'm writing, I realise that the variation is not for my first-time listeners, but for me, who knows the piece very well, and thus enjoys creative variations upon its themes. The listeners aren't familiar with these themes, so the resulting interpretation/variation can just sound like musical weirdness and awkward tempo changes, because they don't have the grounding of having just heard the unaltered (or barely-altered) theme. It feels to me like you're doing this too, but maybe I'm wrong in that assumption. If you happen to know someone who has never heard the original you could even test this theory! My point is, the bulk of this is musically great, but at least from where I'm standing, it's hard not to hear this phenomenon, and it does overshadow the great work you've done somewhat. I don't mean to criticise your piece in its entirety. Its not bad at all, and you have a lot of other good music out there, but I hope that you'll be able to get what I mean by all this and hear what I'm noticing. I'd be interested to know if you are able to see what I mean! P.S. This isn't meant to be rude or pressurising or hateful. You're literally the only channel on youtube I have alerts turned on for. Compose however you want! Ignore this if you want! I'm just here to listen to cool music every 3-6 months. :) (to clarify, this is not hate

Hey Hipsnowsis, huge thanks for your insights :) You are 100% correct in saying that many of my arrangements sound like a variation of a theme with itself never being introduced, because that is intentional; it is just my style of arranging. From my experience, there are couple philosophies when it comes to arranging piano music. One of them is to arrange a theme/melody with minimal change to keep it as close to the original and be familiar, and then insert artists’ own twists and flairs which define the arranger/channel style. This is normally how it’s done by the majority of KZbin channels. The other philosophy is to take an idea and completely transforming it to something new, often still quite familiar, but also sometimes almost unrecognizable to a degree. I prefer to arrange this way. My idea of a “good” arrangement is one that does not sound like an arrangement, but rather like an original piece. It should stand on its own, without needing to rely on the original source. I personally think arrangers should strive to make an arrangement truly personal, and the ‘popular method’ of arranging simply isn’t quite enough for me to be satisfied with the end result. I think the more thought and development you give to an arrangement, the more reason it gives purpose to its existence. There may be thousands of similar arrangements in the theme of Howl’s moving castle, but i can point to my arrangement and confidently say, that is my version. But I understand why people don’t like to do this method (transforming an arrangement to something brand new). Many listeners would be alienated by your arrangement, and hence not popular, and therefore you get the idea that the arrangement is bad/a mistake. But I just don’t think that is true. When you said “I have introduced so much variations into a piece I’m writing”, I do not necessarily consider that a mistake. Whether it’s good depends on how you develop that variation, and if it changed so much into something unrecognizable, so be it! As long as it sounds good to you. When you said “I realise the variation is not for my first-time listeners but for me”, that is good! My motto is to never try to appease your listeners. What’s more important is a to accurately portray your personal artistic expression. I think as long as you think it’s good, it’s good. Write for yourself, not for the listener. Because there will ALWAYS be fans out there who will like for your creative decisions. In the end, there never is a correct answer to how to “arrange” for piano music, and the popular method of arranging is not by any means ‘wrong’ or that mine is right. This is simply my personal thought on what I think an arrangement should be like, and I still stand by it. I do not agree with your sentiment and critique, but that may be because my philosophy of arranging is different from yours. I hope you understand! PS there is nothing rude about your comments. I think we may be taking a slightly different approach in defining what the ideal arrangement is - my instinct is to make any arrangements I make sound like pieces I would have been happy to release as standalone compositions (obviously copyright but like, my point is I don't want enjoyment of my arrangement to rely on prior knowledge of the source material) - if someone could listen to it having never heard the original and still be able to appreciate everything just as much as someone who had. IMO it feels more like your arrangements are designed as (for lack of a more appropriate term) 'accessories' to their originals - they are designed to effect the listener with the benefit of the context of the original, almost as if they're some sort of sequel to the original. I'm not saying that's what you intentionally do, but that at least is perhaps what might lead me away from this technique, while leading you towards it. It's certainly not a bad thing - it's a lot easier to understand the choices you've made with the context of this message.

I definitely do not want my arrangement to sound subservient - it should sound like an original piece. I think I may have misunderstood your first comment. Your second paragraph implied that arranging that is too “out there” is a mistake, so I thought you preferred to arrange in a style that is familiar and close to the original source, hence not as standalone. So in fact, we do have the same goal in mind and I completely stand by your side. Regardless, if there is any point in my arrangement that does sound like ‘just an arrangement’, musical weirdness, or subservient etc, then you would be correct in saying it is lackluster. I guess I only disagree with you when you said you didn’t agree with the first theme introduction having a heavily rubato-feeling section. Imo it acts as a prelude and a preparation to the ‘real’ theme that comes later. I think it’s fine as it is, which is of course my subjective opinion. So yeah.. I think i may have misunderstood your initial comment, sorry for the confusion.
