The title has been changed to include 2021 but the video is from 2017. That would be fine if there were no changes to the application, but the program has changed over the years and the interface is somewhat different. The video should be re-recorded with the current version of the software.

Agree. But this is a great video (on this topic). It will be even better if it can be updated, and possibly with more advanced detail such as the meaning of and how to "remap" bad sectors found.
@Manarox21425 ай бұрын
@@franklekwan5860 The disk addresses the sector and the color in the program shows the sector response time. If the sector does not respond for too long, it is marked as damaged. Disk manufacturers took this into account and added reserve sectors to the disk closer to the center of the physical disks. Otherwise, when damaged sectors are detected, the disk capacity would decrease. Thus, damaged sectors are replaced with reserve ones and the disk volume is maintained at the same level. But the size of the reserves is also limited and at some point it may run out, but you need to change the disk to a new one before this happens.

I got my brand new seagate ST4000VX016 drive, and I did the scan with Victoria it looks quite good to me. But the SMART satus says "unideal." What does it really mean?
@HetmanRecovery4 ай бұрын
The SMART status “unideal” typically indicates that there are some parameters in the SMART data of the drive that are not within the optimal range. This could mean that the drive is experiencing some issues or errors that may affect its performance or reliability in the future. It’s important to monitor the drive closely and consider backing up your data regularly to prevent any potential data loss. If you are concerned about the health of your Seagate ST4000VX016 drive, you can use Hetman Partition Recovery to create a backup of your important files and folders. This way, you can ensure that your data is safe even if the drive encounters further issues. If you need further assistance or have any other questions, feel free to ask.

What is the difference between scanning in Verify and Read mode?
@HetmanRecovery Жыл бұрын
Verify and Read are two different processes when dealing with files on a hard disk or other storage device. Verify is a process that compares the contents of two files, usually the original and a copy, to determine if they match. Verify can be useful when it is important to ensure that the file you have copied has been copied correctly and is not damaged. Read is the process of reading data from a storage device. When you read files from a hard disk or flash drive, the computer scans the data on the disk and transfers it to memory for further processing. This can be useful when you want to read files from a storage device to transfer them to another computer or save them to an external drive. Thus Verify is used to verify data integrity and Read is used to read data from the storage device.

is it the red sector mean software badsector, and the blue one mean physically bad sector?
@HetmanRecovery7 ай бұрын
A red sector means a programmatically bad sector, and a blue sector means a physically bad sector. A software bad sector (red) is a sector on the disk that is marked as bad by the software. This can be done due to errors in the file system or if the operating system determines that the sector may be untrusted. However, physically this sector may be fine. A physically bad sector (blue) is a sector that has physical damage on the surface of the disk. These damages can be the result of wear and tear, mechanical damage, or other physical causes. Physically damaged sectors cannot be used for data storage.

@@HetmanRecovery i got one more question. when im testing my drive i got 3 blue sector with letter "T" inside of it, and its not counted as a Err in the sector indicator because the blue sector in the indicator have letter "X" in the inside of it. so what the blue sector with letter "T" means?
@HetmanRecovery7 ай бұрын
The blue sector with the letter “T” inside of it in the drive testing indicator typically indicates that the sector is marked as “Tentative” or “Tricky” by the testing software. This means that the sector may have some potential issues or errors that need further investigation. It is not considered a definite error like the sectors marked with the letter “X,” but it suggests that there may be some data integrity concerns in that particular sector. In general, when you encounter sectors marked as “T” during a drive test, it is recommended to pay attention to them and monitor their status over time. It is a good idea to back up your important data and consider running diagnostic tools or seeking professional help to assess the health of your drive and address any potential issues before they escalate into more serious problems.

I have a Western Digital 2.5 inch SATA HDD that has died. I plugged the bad HDD into a Fantom brand SATA external drive that originally housed a 3TB 3.5 inch drive which I removed for this test. I have tried Recoverit, EaseUS, and Hard Disk Sentinel recovery programs. However, in each case the recovery programs each lock up (not responding) as soon as I plug my drive into the USB port. Do you have any idea what would cause this, and is there any reason why your program would not do the same? I can't imagine that the pro recovery services don't have programs that won't lock up.

@@HetmanRecovery Correct. I have tried several different things, which I will describe individually: 1) If I plug in my Fantom brand USB dock/bad HDD combo and then attempt a computer restart (via/repeated F2 presses) the laptop will never reach the BIOS screen. As soon as I unplug the USB cable the laptop is able to enter the BIOS screen. Of course at that point the BIOS only shows the internal C drive. Plugging the USB back in still does not allow the BIOS to see the USB drive; 2) If I unplug the USB cable and allow the laptop to restart normally and then open Device Manager, Disk Management, and Windows Explorer, then each of them can see the internal C drive. However, if I then plug in the USB cable I am able to see the "bad drive" model number in Device Manager. However, Disk Management shows only the C drive, and Windows Explorer also shows only the C drive; 3) I have tried the following recovery programs: Recoverit, EaseUS, Hard Disk Sentinel, and Disk Drill. As a retired software designer it seems obvious to me that someone should be able to write a program that will trap this kind of situation and return something like "Unable to read sector" or whatever (Unfortunately, I don't know anything about HDD internals). I'm very interested in your thoughts about this...and of course I'm interested in recovering my data too! lol

@HetmanRecovery Жыл бұрын
If your HDD shows "unknown" status in SMART, it may be an indication that the SMART monitoring software cannot read the data from the drive correctly or that the drive is not SMART-compliant. Try using another SMART monitoring software or restart your computer and check the SMART status in the BIOS. If you still see "unknown", it may be a sign that the drive is damaged and needs to be replaced. Don't forget that before you replace the hard drive, you need to back up the important data stored on this drive.

A nice tool, but: whenever I try to use any WRITE activity the program Victoria says : ABRT "Access denied", at each block. The external 2.5TB drive in question is connected to a Windows10 PC through a SATA-USB interface and can be accessed (formatting, writing, reading) in Windows without problems. Why can't Victoria write to the drive? Where is a 'switch' to change this ridiculous limitation? All I am trying to find out is why a questionable drive may have issues, bad blocks etc. Without any write access in a test program this makes no sense at all... Where is the error? Between my ears? Thanks!

Did you ever fix this? I'm having same problem
@coryscomputerrepair2 жыл бұрын
The error happens because the drive cant have an MBR or GPT on it to use this feature (as mentioned in Question 3 and 6 on Victora's FAQ) I had this issue also until I fixed it. Use DISKPART and "CLEAN" the disk so the drive is unallocated. Do not worry, diskpart clean feature doesn't do a full wipe, it just gets rid of the partitions and leaves the drive UNALLOCATED. Then refresh the drive list in Victoria and instead of a drive letter, select the disk number corresponding to the drive. THIS SOLUTION FIXES ACCESS DENIED FOR REMAPPING AS WELL.

So version 4.47 shows light grey as 5ms medium grey as 20ms, dark grey as 20ms and 200ms is green, and 600ms is orange and bad. Yet now on version 5.37 in 2024 the software shows 25ms as light grey (5x higher) 100ms as medium grey (5x higher) and 250ms being dark grey(5x higher), and green has increased to massive 1000ms (a whole 1second!) which is also 5x higher than before, and orange is now 3000ms (3seconds!!!). How on earth is anyone supposed to trust this software's threshold for bad sectors if one minute it's 200milliseconds to be bad and the next its 5x longer at a whole second!?!? which is correct? has any of it ever been correct?. With a 7200rpm speed and an average seek time of around 8ms (less as its sequential reads) each sector read should take about 4ms, so even with a read retry count of 5 it should only reach around 30 to 40ms to seek and attempt to read a random sector 5 times, and never 1000ms for it to still show green as still ok!, (whats that, several hundred attempted failed reads as still ok?).
@Ra-zor22 күн бұрын
I am even more confused, as at 2:35 it shows light grey 4ms, medium grey 16ms, dark grey 40ms, green 160ms and orange 600ms! numbers are all over the place. No idea which to believe any more or if hdd is good or bad.
