@Pystro3 ай бұрын
I believe there is massive potential in developing a technique that addresses the actual limitations to reaching these heights. Firstly, I don't really get why the towers are usually built wider at the base with this design. I don't think any tower has ever failed from excessive load on the wood or plastic. It's usually due to swaying. 99% of the load is going straight through those vertical "node columns" where the ends of the dominoes sit on top of each other. There's no efficient diagonal load paths to the outside node columns of the structure, which you'd need to stop the swaying. In fact, with the wrong technique (offsetting the dominoes the wrong way), you can actually force load from the outer parts to be transferred to the core instead. Which means that such a structure that is simply stepping out as you go down won't reliably distribute the load to beyond that central pillar at all (or at least it would effectively rely on random variation in the domino placement and be very inefficient). And I believe that the swaying is ultimately caused by the "horizontal" contact plane between dominoes skewing too far from being truly level. Or in other words, with each added layer the contact patches in the node columns will inevitably drift away from being at truly the same height. Which the stepping out doesn't help with at all either. In fact, no tower design I've seen addresses this issue. One very efficient strategy to address the contact plane skew would be to use dominoes with dimensions 1.01x3.00x6.00. That way you can measure how horizontal the contact layers are, and where necessary substitute one 3.00 high domino with a 3.03 high stack of 3 flat ones. 1.01x2.00x4.00 would also work, but the 1:3 ratio has the advantage that you can replace two parallel dominoes in normal orientation with 3 alternating flat layers. And paradoxically, intentionally making the contact surface very subtly bowl-shaped would help too. That way a node that is too high has dominoes meet at a more perfect angle, which means the next node will be exactly 3.00 units higher. A node that is too high has dominoes meet at a more skew angle, which lifts the node up more than 3.00 units. The nodes at the edges will also always rise 3.00 units with each layer. That's why I chose to make the alternate orientation be _thicker_ than dominoes in the standard orientation, so that ocassionally incorporating them at the edges makes the edges lift about as much as an interior node with an average contact surface curvature. The .01 extra thickness (or .03 for a whole 3-stack) is just a guess and would need to be optimized to give you a suitable bowl shape. Oh and also, if you're using scissor lifts in a building with balconies around the build area, it might make sense to anchor the scissor lifts to those balconies with ropes to stop them from swaying.
@johnblyth97873 ай бұрын
A scissor lift that is going up cannot be ancored. It is while they are being elevated the sway happens. Thank you for the text book on verticle domino construction. 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
@Pystro3 ай бұрын
@@johnblyth9787 You're not completely wrong. Scissor lifts that need to move can't be _permanently_ anchored. But there's nothing keeping you from untying the ropes, moving the lift (down and back up, or just a few inches up) and then re-tying the anchor ropes.
