I’m so glad to see this tutorial. When my mother passed she had a Gmas Flower garden quilt in progress I inherited. Haven’t touched it because I was afraid of hexies. Now, I can work on it!

I really enjoyed your help with Hexagons. I've always done them by hand, that's how grandma taught me, I'm 74 and the grandma, but no girls to pass it onto. Your table runner was gorgeous, and the use of fussy cuts around the flowers was beautiful. Thank you very much.

This is the best explanation of Hexi hand work I've seen. I love the natural way you present. The machine sewing of hexi is something I may have to try. You certainly made the idea of hand sewing hexi's less intimidating. I have done a few but never finished one flower.

Vickie, this was such a great video and even though I don't do a ton of hand work, i will be doing this by hand rather than machine. I love, love, love paper piecing hexies. I make them in all sizes and I do it all by hand. It's fast and easy. I have made placemats, table runners, quilts, coasters, pillows, and more. I use the hexie flowers to embellish all sorts of things. They are so fun and cute and brighten up any space. It's a great way to use up scraps. They make really cute borders too. You can use them to make really cute pin cushions as well or put a button in the center as an added decoration. They make really cute pockets on an apron or little girl's dress or skirt. I am really hooked on these. They are so fun.

@@CreativeNotions I tried doing it and it's a bit challenging but of course it can be done. Every time I watch a video about paper piecing hexies for projects, I get all inspired over again. I have been trying to figure out how to use the left over hexies after making flowers and saw a video yesterday that makes flowers of all the same color but different patterns. So cute! I also saw on Missouri Star a video about how to put batting and a backing on each hexie and finish them individually so that there is no need for machine or hand quilting. I'm going to have to try that as well.

I am currently doing hexies with the Daisy and Grace, Quilt as you go templates. It is fun, too. If I wanted to make big stitches by hand inside my hexies, what kind of thread would I use, so it would show up?
@CreativeNotions

If you want to make stitches that show you could use a heavier weight thread such as Masterpiece 50 wt by Superior threads or you could use embroidery thread. If you don't want the stitches to show use a thinner thread like Sew Fine #30 wt by Superior Threads or another that is 40 wt or less. :)

That would be my suggestion. Try pulling as much of the paper off as you can and wet the rest. It’s a water soluble glue so it should release after it’s wet. Next time use a tiny amount of glue or a glue stick would work well too.

I don't understand why you are sticking AND sewing. I love EPP but I use a stick glue. I don't take the paper out until it's incased by another piece. ie middle of flower. Always interesting how others do things😁

Hi Angela, sometimes I use a glue stick to hold the fabric too especially if the fabric is cut to just over the size of the cardboard. I didn’t mention it but meant to that if you cut a square that is bigger than the cardboard it is easier to sew it without the glue and give more fabric to hold onto. I like to try new methods too so you should choose the one that works best for you.

Looks like the glue makes it a bit of a nuisance to get the papers out. To make it look easy, refilm an easy removal. This is just enough extra fuss to make me not want to use this method. The NO paper method by hand or machine looks a lot easier. The famous Y seams look easy enough. )))
