My dog is a ESA(helps me with anxiety) and she's pretty decent at keeping herself in check. However I do not mix my ESA with an actual service dog. My dog comes to work, but I don't use the ESA tags to call her a service dog, there's a very big difference

It is kind of sad that there is no official certificate for service animals. It would make it easier for store owners to check if the dog owner isn't cheating and the owner of a legit service animal could be more confident about going into such places.

I came upon this video just now, and overall, it's a great video with lots of accurate information. I would emphasize that it is the PERSON who has the right to be accompanied by a service dog; the dog does not have rights. For example, if my fiance who isn't disabled, came into a store with my guide dog, technically it is illegal and if the store owner knew that, he could ask my fiance to have the dog removed. Of course it would have to be a store we go to regularly who knows us. I remember years ago, the owners of a coffee shop did this to someone who brought in a guide dog. The owners knew the team, but on this day, the dog was accompanied by the handler's family member or friend--I can't remember--and because the owners knew that the dog did not belong to the person, they asked that the dog be removed. As to certificates being issued to service dog teams, I understand the logic behind that idea. However, a piece of paper or identification card does not guarantee a dog's behavior, even if it is a service dog and from a school. Over my 25 years of being a dog handler and having been around hundreds of service dog teams--both owner trained and from service dog organizations--I've seen poorly behaved dogs who received their training from an organization, and I've also seen owner trained dogs that were impeccably behaved. The Seeing Eye, the pioneer of the service dog movement, does issue id cards which has their logo on it as well as the names of the team. But if a handler does not actively maintain the dog's training (a lifetime commitment), make sure the dog is under their control at all times, correct or redirect undesired behaviors, and ensure that the dog is doing the tasks he/she has been trained to do, whatever "documents" the handler has isn't going to guarantee that the dog won't bark or otherwise be a nuisance to those around them. Service dog handlers have a responsibility to be sure they keep up with the dog's training, is well-behaved in public places, and focused on their work. But just like any other community, there are all types of handlers; some are just lazy and sloppy, others are fantastic, and others are still young and learning. I'm not sure that there is a "correct" solution. When I educate business owners, I tell them to observe the dog's behavior and ask the two allowed questions--in the States. Personally I wouldn't care if pet dogs are allowed in public places as long as the handler puts in the work to socialize and prepare the dog to be well-behaved. It is a shame that people with poorly behaved dogs will use the term "service dog" to scare business owners into admitting the dog, and it is equally a shame when service dog handlers who have gotten dogs from organizations allow the training to diminish and allow the dog to act like an unruly animal. Also, if a business asks questions or simply doesn't know better, a handler who gets angry or defensive isn't helping matters.

Ok so gonna be a long one. I had to retire/wash my service dog because of people bringing in pets/ emotional support animals to non pet friendly places. I am so glad you have put this out there but it would have been nice for you to add that there is no such thing as an ID or paperwork for a service dog. You can also owner train your dog as well. Dog training is my passion as a matter of fact ABC is where I plan on studying, but any ways it means a lot when someone with a platform puts this info out there. And for the people that think it doesn’t do any damage, my 15,000 medical equipment had to retire, got attached multiple times, and I now get extreme anxiety and ptsd around dogs in buildings because all I can think of is my dog being attacked and the store saying it’s my fault.

Sorry to hear about your bad experiences, I hope you can find some way to cope in the future, I know it's hard, I've had extreme anxiety my whole life.
