Today we go on a stroll through central Bandung. I start off at my hotel, the Grand Viveana, and we just start walking in the direction of the house where Sukarno was tried in 1930 for his speech that he gave the year prior. Didn't take long for me to find some delicious food to try. There was a small warung boiling and grilling up some tasty-looking chicken. After a quick bite, I walk to the Indonesia Mengguagat Building, the place of Sukarno's trial in 1930. It's there that we get a quick look inside the building, it was pretty small so there wasn't much to see, and all the information was in Indonesian so, sorry. I then explain how one of the biggest crimes committed by the Dutch during the occupation was the limited access to education provided to the native population. Only 7% of the native population by 1930 were literate. Of course, this was done on purpose, the more educated you are the more you realize what your colonizers are doing is wrong and you'll be more likely to revolt. And that's exactly what happened, the limited few people, like Sukarno, who did have access to European education learned about the world around them and specifically how their colonizers actually won their independence again Spain many centuries before. So of course they thought if they can do it, why the hell can't we. So that's exactly what they did...
After that, I then head toward the Gedung Sate, but learn that it's closed, or that I need to go to a different gate... I just wander around the outside of the premises until they let me in. I'm able to get to the front of the building but they won't let me inside.

Hi Nick, if it wasnt for The Great Depression of 1929, the Dutch East Indies capital city would have been relocated from Batavia (now Jakarta) to Bandung in late 1930s. The Gedung Sate you saw are supposed to be the headquarter/the office of Dutch East Indies Governor General. Thats why the building is so grand and massive. It was planned to be even twice to three times bigger than the current building. But since the plan was scrapped. The development was scaled down and the capital city relocation was cancelled. And it became The office of West Java Province Governor. And the building is not part of Dutch architectural style, but it is a distinct Dutch East Indies style. And about why not many people around, because it is still closed for tourism activity due to pandemic. And this is Provincial government mainly for "political" or "strategic" purpose, in Indonesia .. many red tapes, or civil administrative matters are usually done at separate buildings in lower government level such as City Local government or even lower municipal level.

interesting, so that was supposed to be the new e capital building. I'm glad it never got to that point but i would have loved to have seen what the original plan was, it's already huge! too bad i couldn't go inside

Hey Nick love your vlogs bro, Bandung is my Fiancé's home city, just to let you know, the Guard was just trying to tell you that those cars that you seen parked inside belong to people who work there lol, Gedung Sate is actually the governors office and the time you visited there the governor was having a meeting hence the reason they couldn't let you in, keep up the vlogs bro really enjoy watching your content 👍

Thank you, Nick. I think your "Bahasa Indonesia" is pretty good, I'll always smiling when you speak with local with Bahasa Indonesia. Also, I love the way you explained the history about place you visited. Btw, starts from today (3 April 2022), most of Indonesia people who are Muslim are fasting for the next 30 days. The interesting part is you can find a lot of food, usually dessert, at around 5 - 6.30 p.m., because we need it to break our fast and refill our energy. I wish you can hunt those food and get this "rare" experience.

Hello Nick, Gedung Sate is now the office of provincial government of West Java, my (late) father worked in this building as government official. During Dutch colonial time, this building was the office of public works, transport and water (Departement Van Verkeer En Waterstaat in Dutch). During independence war, seven officials were killed in December 3, 1945, and this date became the birthdate of the Ministry of Public Works (where I worked for 19 years). You can find a monument around the building with these seven names inscripted.

Hi Nick, I love all of yr videos. The tour bus you wanted to hop in is called 'Bandros'.. These bandros buses usually go round some area in Bandung area, circling the historical places. It starts from Alun-alun, near the Great Mosque (Mesjid Agung), I'm sure you can find it easily.. I've tried once and the nice thing I like is there a tour guide who tells the story related to the places where the bus passed. I guess you knew already now about the Bandros bus, you are so good in digging up the stories and news behind the places you visited... Keep healthy, Nick, and please stay longer.😉

TBH i dont like other vlogger who just make a video because they know indo people are easily hype if foreigner make a video anything even simple things like just try indo food, then they youtubes subscribers will increase very crazy. Real vlogger should be like this. Not just visit a fancy place and just show they are eat food. Great work 👍🏻

The restaurant you ate at minute 2:00 is 'Semar Pandawa' restaurant. It's pretty old restaurant, my father and mother go on a date there (like 30 years ago lol). And i love it too, it's delicious. My parent always take me to eat there once a month (since when i was in elementary school). But when pandemi attack, i think the restaurant go and fired a few workers. So the taste of the foods change (in a bad way) since it's not the usual worker who made the foods. I tried visit the restaurant a few times in 2020, 2021 (hoping the taste will better like old times). But no, even my parent agree it doesn't taste delicious anymore. So we stopped visit the restaurant. I really hope the restauraurant can bring back the old delicious taste like old time 😢

Where there's a will, there will be a way! You just proved it, Nick, by finding the way in to Gedung Sate area. Yes it should be restricted to public since it's the governor's office. But you're so fortunate to get that close to the main building 😁 Fun fact about Gedung Sate: there are six "pieces of meat" on the satay stick, that represents the amount of cost that Dutch spent to build the building at the time, which was around six million gulden (Dutch currency).
