I am Steve There are many other Steves But there is only one that is me I am Steve I could've been a David or a Jean But then I wouldn't really be me And I am Steve in the mornin' Steve in the eve Steve in the mirror lookin' back saying "who is me." I am Steve And they say "Run Stevie, run Stevie, do what you can. Get you a house, and a car, and some happiness." Go Stevie, go Stevie, be the best Steve you can be!" Run Stevie, Run Stevie, do what you can. And if it doesn't work just try it again But if you do it right, you'll be kickin' back at night sayin' "Yes I'm livin' the dream," I am Steve I am Steve I am Steve I'm still workin' on myself. But Steve still needs a little help What's it mean? And why should I get out of bed? Am I the only Steve with a voice in my head singin' "Run Stevie, run Stevie, do what you can. Get you a house, and a car, and some happiness." "Go Stevie, go Stevie, be the best Steve you can be!" Run Stevie, Run Stevie, do what you can. And if it doesn't work just try it again But if you do it right, you'll be kickin' back at night sayin' "Yes I'm livin' the dream," I am Steve Steve in the ocean, Steve in the sea, Stevie lookin' for the meaning of Steve Steve feelin' lonely, but Steve 'ain't alone There's a million other Steve's in the little Steve homes... All singin' "Run Stevie, run Stevie, do what you can. Get you a house, and a car, and some happiness." Go Stevie, go Stevie, be the best Steve you can be!" Run Stevie, Run Stevie, do what you can. And if it doesn't work just try it again But if you do it right, you'll be kickin' back at night sayin' "Yes I'm livin' the dream," I am Steve I am Steve I am Steve Yes, I am Steve

The more I listen to this song the more I realize how true it was when that one songwriter told me the way to touch the most people is by having a more specific song, because the more broad the song is the less personal it feels, but the more personal the song is the closer it feels to the listeners. My name isn't Steve and there probably aren't millions of other people with the same name as me, but I relate so closely and personally to this song for reasons I couldn't even explain. Maybe it's because the song feels so authentic that I see my own authenticity through it? I'm not sure.
@dudeman53032 жыл бұрын
Oh straight up, there are certain things that can be written in a more universal language like a specific experience but overall yeah it is much better to write in a specific way overall. I mean look at post grunge - literally every person in existence could hear those songs and relate it to themselves and insane amounts of people detest that stuff because of how generic it is, it'll be a chorus of just "I hate you, cuz you were mean" or some dumb ass shit. It's literally a caricature of how teenage angst feels, but then you see legit Seattle music - what got called grunge, but I don't consider grunge a genre so I tend to just say it's the 80s and 90s Seattle scene - it's some of the best selling music around because they actually gave a fvck what they wrote about and wrote about their own experiences. You compare Nirvana or Soundgarden lyrics to Nickelback and they're leagues apart because Nirvana and Soundgarden actually cared about the songs they wrote and were writing because they wanted to connect with people and share their own experience. I think a certain veil of some sort is necessary so people can picture the song in a personal way of their own doing, but the vague stuff a lot of people throw in is really cheap in my opinion. There is definitely a balance for it but I think if we're talking in broad terms, it's a very very good idea to be specific
@dudeman53032 жыл бұрын
Another thing, Authenticity is a big thing for me. If I get the feeling a song isn't coming from a "real" person I can't listen to it, the honesty is the most important part - and tbh I never really thought about it like this but when people speak in overly broad/vague ways it comes off like they don't want you to actually know what *they* think, it's like they're hiding something. I can't listen to a song of it doesn't feel like the people who made it aren't putting themselves in it.
@ariaa.9428 Жыл бұрын
The essence of the song very tangible, even though hides behind the name "Steve". Steve it's just a name, it could be any other; we all as humans are very similar if not identical in the sense that not one is more special than another at the end of the day, we share more than names: people are average, yet we are still individuals. The only thing that differences you from me is the fact that you are you and I am me. The song quite literally explains how everyone listening is as average as everyone else and how regardless of it one is still oneself and has control over how happy one's average live can be. The song really puts the concepts of identity and ego (as the experience of living one's own live) into play while spreading a really positive message.

I see a lot of people talk this as motivation but I think this is a good place to stop and think about why we do the things we do. Why work? Why go to school? It’s so we can relax and be happy, right? Well why ain’t we happy now? Why only after going to the best schools, learning the highest paying jobs, and climbing the corporate ladder do we consider ourselves happy? And if things don’t work out we’re told to throw ourselves back in the meat grinder that makes time only for the grind and not other people. This song hit different for me.

Hi! Here's my story about finding this song. Like someone else here, I was at a Shinedown show (at a FAIR, mind you) and stuck in this huge crowd of people leaving after the show. This song comes on over the loudspeakers and I'm like "What the heck is THIS?" It was so strange. But, as I listened to it (as I had to), I realized that, yes it was different...but hey, that's catchy. I started bouncing my head to the tune and realized what an awesome little song it was - and it was making me feel really happy. I automatically started jamming to it, how could I not?? I had my smartphone tell me who it was and I had it downloaded before I left the fairgrounds. It really is a unique and awesome song. I'm SO glad I found it. It's saying don't give up - "and if it doesn't work, just try it again - and if you do it right you'll be kickin' back at night sayin' yes, I'm livin' the dream!" Just so cool. It's a blessing that I found it. ❤ It really makes me feel good. Thanks, Steve !!
