Heybike Cityrun Initial Impressions - • A Feature Packed & Aff...
Today we are riding a commuter style eBike, the "Heybike Cityrun".
In this video I test the top speed of the bike as well as go over how well the rest of the bike performs. Despite a few minor cons, this bike delivers a lot of value for the price!

I never heard of Heybike before but saw their website and these bikes actually look pretty good

They've been around for a few years now but in my opinion, these are some of the first bikes to have a better and more refined look of their own. They seem to be headed in a good direction and I'm looking forward to following their progress with future bikes!

They're a smaller company but they've been around for a few years now. A friend of mine has the "HeyBike Mars" which is one of their older ebikes. He's had it for a few years and still rides it all the time so it seems like a dependable bike.

I wonder if you can go in the app or controller to unlock class 3 speeds?

I was hoping so, but unfortunately you cannot which is a bit disappointing. Hopefully with a future update we can get that feature!

Looks good but need faster than 20mph especially for a 500w bike it should go faster
@EricReviews
@EricReviews Жыл бұрын
I agree! It should definitely go at least 28mph but as stated in the video, hopefully they release an app update that will let us unlock it to Class 3 speeds

I've watched almost all the reviews on the Heybike Cityrun and ended up purchasing it. I've had it for over a week and I love it. However, here are a few minor things that I noticed that sometimes did not get mentioned in some of the reviews. 1. I'm going to list this first because I consider it the most disappointing thing, but certainly not a deal breaker for me. Everything else I consider somewhat minor. Hopefully, somebody from Heybike will read this and put out a firmware update that will add this feature: Occasionally, you might not want to do any peddling and just ride it like a scooter by only using the throttle. This bike has NO CRUISE CONTROL and your thumb gets very tired if you're cruising for a long time. It seems to me that this could easily be added with a firmware update. 2. The assembly video is not really that good. What made it particularly challenging and somewhat confusing is that my bike did not come with the quick-release front axle as described in the assembly video. It was easy to figure out, nonetheless. 3. There is a button on the right side of the handlebars, just beneath the throttle toggle, that is labeled "Auto." It is either pushed in or it is out. Nothing appears on the display whether the button is in or out, so it's difficult to know, "What is in auto?" The button is not mentioned in the user manual. If the button is pushed in, the lights will automatically sense that it is dark and turn on. If it is not pushed in, the lights can only be turned on manually. This is a fairly silly and unnecessary feature it seems to me. If it's dark, turn on the lights! I'm pretty sure I can figure out if it's dark and I might need to turn the lights on. Geez. I would have preferred that the button engaged cruise control, not something as unimportant as whether the lights automatically turn on or not. 4. I took the advice of one reviewer (on KZbin) and changed my seat post to one that has a shock absorber. It made the ride much smoother. Good advice! 5. Some reviewers and users have expressed disappointment that when they turn the bike off, the display says "off," which means something must still be powering the bike. That's true. I doubt this really takes much power as your car also uses power while it's off. In any case, if this really bothers you, there is an ON/OFF switch near the charging port where you insert the charger when the battery is installed in the bike. Turn that off and everything is completely powered down. Easy! HOWEVER! I noticed that in some reviews, the charging port didn't have this switch. It must be something Heybike added later. 6. I've noticed the charging level display is not very accurate; or, at least, it inexplicably fluctuates. When I don't peddle and make the motor do all the work, the charging level sometimes drops down a bar or two. Then, when I start peddling again, I get one or two bars back. That really doesn't make sense unless the bike has regenerative capabilities, which it doesn't. 7. The app that connects to the bike via bluetooth has a "track my ride" feature that seems to tap into Google maps. I couldn't figure out how it is supposed to work and could never get it to "track my ride." It shows a map and my current location. Great! Now what? There is a button that says "Go" but, when I select it, it doesn't track anything. Nothing happens. There is no explanation on how to do this. 8. I love how the handlebars sweep back. I hate hunching over the entire time like I am competing in the Tour de France. 9. I'm glad it only has 7 gears instead of 21, like most e-bikes. Who needs that many gears on an electric bike??? Seven is plenty. The less moving parts the better for maintenance purposes. 10. Both tires have highly-reflective sidewalls. It makes the bike quite noticeable when viewed from the side. They look like two giant glowing circles. A great safety feature! 11. This bike has cadence sensing, not torque sensing. This means that the motor assists based on how FAST you're peddling, not how HARD you're peddling. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. Some say that cadence sensing tends to "take off" on you more the moment you start peddling. I have found that to be true but I also didn't find it to be a problem. All in all, none of the negative things are deal breakers for me. I love this bike. It's a true beast. If you're a tall or heavy person, you're not going to be disappointed. I noticed that many of the other e-bikes are not comfortable for anybody 6-feet or over. This is one of the reasons I selected this bike. For context: I'm 66 years old, 6'2" tall and weigh 200lbs.

I haven't tried it on this one yet, but try activating "walk mode" while moving on throttle. A lot of times this would lock in your current speed and basically work as cruise control.
@DavidEmerling79
@DavidEmerling79 9 ай бұрын
@@EricReviews No, that doesn't work. Walk mode makes the bike go a little under 4mph and it only does that as long as the bottom button is depressed.

I can’t find anyone testing this bike on hills. My town and subdivision are hilly. I like the ranger but it’s lacking the same light features.

Unfortunately I don't have many hills in my area to test that but if you look at the amazon link I have in my description and search "hill" in the reviews, there are a few reviewers who state they live in hilly areas and the bike handled well.

Love the brown sidewalls. Really makes the bike pop and stand out. Looks like a good bike spec wise, but personally I would ditch the extra curvy bars and go with a BMX style or straight bar instead.

Is this bike 500w or 750w? Looks good but I am hoping at least 750 to handle hills good
@EricReviews

This one is a 500w bike. Still plenty of torque and power though and should handle hills very well. If you feel you absolutely need a 750w, they also sell their "Heybike brawn" which has a 750w motor and a few other upgrades.

That's the most flexy bike I've ever ridden. My friend bought that bike and I rode it around a little and thought the rear tire was going flat but it was the frame flexing...you could practically steer it with your rear end applying pressure to the saddle left and right...has no one else noticed this??
@EricReviews
@EricReviews Жыл бұрын
Not sure.. Perhaps if I rode it rough as some flex is expected with most step thru bikes, but with regular city commuting and light bumps I didn't feel anything.

Looks like a good bike! It looks like the handlebars must feel similar to riding a chopper motorcycle. Like you said, not a good style for fast riding or quick turns but thats an easy fix to just change the bars. What do you film your bike ride videos with? The video looks very smooth and the audio is very clear as well.
@EricReviews
@EricReviews Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I plan to eventually switch these out with something closer to a BMX style handlebar so that it has a bit of a curve to it, but mostly straight. Thank you! I film my indoor videos with my S21 Ultra phone, then with my bike riding videos I use my GoPro 9 with their "chesty strap". It's a solid little camera. I just put it on flat mode and then color grade it myself since I prefer to tweak it to get the look I prefer instead of using their oversaturated and default settings. I know they're like on GoPro 11 already but this one has worked so well I really don't plan on upgrading unless this one breaks on me. As for the microphone it's just a cheap Lav mic I got from amazon called the "Purple Panda". I don't remember the price but it must've costed me somewhere around 20 or 30 bucks. I might upgrade that eventually, but for now it's more than good enough so I've just stuck with it.

Really cool that you can tune the torque of the pedal assist output. My wife has an ebike and she always saids the pedal assist sometimes kicks in too quick. She learned to deal with it by now but this wouldve been a lot better to have. Great to see ebikes starting to let you tune it the way you'd like now! Thanks for the new ebike content as usual Eric! Looking forward to seeing what bikes you try out next

I agree! No more "you get what you get" settings. Apps like this is a great direction and hopefully all ebikes start implementing it eventually. Thanks for watching!
