I think they could remain trapped together for life rather like Edward and Wallis - by their toxic codependency, by parenthood, by having too many shared secrets to risk a divorce battle - and slowly slide into penury, obscurity and mutual loathing. A different option might be the single event disaster - a murder, suicide, felony or mental breakdown - which removes one of them entirely.
