HGV Dash Camera - Tight loading bay/Wimborne

This is a short video showing the approach and reverse procedure to our store in Wimborne, Dorset. The loading bay is fairly tight and requires a 180° turn to get the trailer aligned with the back door. As you can see, reversing into the bay is not an option as the service road is fairly narrow with an awkward corner, and leads straight off a roundabout.
This is just one of the many stores we have which involves tight spaces and a lot of awareness of your surroundings to avoid accidents! I hope to be uploading more very shortly to show you other such places we deliver too.
The camera I'm using is a Nextbase 402G Professional. I hope you enjoy the video!

Amazing how store designers keep doing this. How they are going to get deliveries seems not to be on their design radar. Architect: how big are the trucks you want to send? Depot manager: 50ft long Architect: OK. Will a 35ft square yard do, I'm sure the drivers will manage 😄

Yep. I'm an Aldi artic driver and this is everyday for us, except usually through tight and busy car parks, and often 90 degree blindsides. They really don't take the size of a truck into consideration when building these places. You did well to get on there.

Almost exactly like Sainsbury’s at Sherborne Dorset. Getting in was simple, but getting out was the same as shown. When you are jackknifed to the max the trailer actually goes backwards.

Makes you wonder what if any awareness of HGV's and the room they need the people who design these loading bays. I used to drive for M&S and we had some worse than this, we had some that were even a struggle with a 25' single axle trailer and others tat were a blind side reverse off the street into a bay not much wider than the trailer

I think you just have to leave same distance as it is from your rear wheels to the end of the trailer.. It should not swing more when you turn cab 90 degrees from your trailer.. So that should be enough.. So if trailer is like meter and a half than should be more than enough room for the swing.. Probably even a meter would be enough.. But if I am wrong all you can destroy is pole and parts of the wall so its all good

the worst i think i have ever seen was the old Sainsburys at Stafford, if you had never delivered there before the transport office would tell you to mind the gatepost! You could not turn in the yard, it was impossible, so you had to reverse in doing a 180 degree turn as you entered. As the nearside corner came round, the gatepost was in the way. It had been taken out so many times it was big enough to moor the Titanic to! The only damage would be to your cab. If you were in the wrong place for the bay there was not even enough length in the yard to pull forward and take a shunt, you had to pull out and take another attempt at getting in the yard! A nightmare, even if you had been there before.

Let's build the biggest store possible with a carpark. Put some foliage in. Then leave a small piece for the delivery drivers and fill that full of crap like pallets , waste bins, forklifts, generators and a massive fire extinguisher system. At least one benefit is that your skill level will increase.

But remember everybody else different driving skills I reckon the person who come up with that way was a good driver and being probably doing it for a long time experience counts. Fucking hell lol. Did the store guy be a banksman for that or do they just stand there and watch? That would piss me off knowing how tight that is and seeing that tail swing has caused previous damage and them just watch. Also I'm assuming reversing down is not an option there. I see JL Waitrose is advertising for class 1, good money too. Shame they're a hell of a commute away.

Thanks for the comment, in theory it is possible yes but even then that would only be at certain times when it was safe to do so such as the video when it was an early morning on a Sunday. Rigids believe it or not actually need more room as they don't bend and would need about 3 or 4 shunts where as an artic can pull the trailer around also less deliveries so save on fuel. This to be honest for most drivers this would be an easy delivery as it's an empty yard and if this driver think's this is tight he should try some of the big 4 as some of theirs are nightmares, Iceland's coop and londis are even worse I have dropped at all of them and more but have had fun and still enjoy it.
