Is it necessary to use stainless steel plates in an HHO generator, or will carbon steel work for this purpose? I did some research. You decide.
Here is a link to Part 2
• HHO Generator with Car...
HHO gas is explosive. Here is a link to safety information.
• HHO Generator
Lye is sodium hydroxide. I did not test with potassium hydroxide.

I agree with you Mr White . I have been using mild/carbon steel for a while with good results. The trick i found is a 6% sodium hydroxide and 1 % sucrose electrolite. I have no iron oxide ( brown sediment ) buildup and only the water is topped up now and then. I use a oxy / propane torch with a small brazing nozzle 0.8mm and feed butane camping gas through the second pipe. This allows me to adjust the flame type, stop the hho from burning back into the nozzle and to shut it off safely by closing the hho first, which prevents any flashback. I hope this of use to someone

Sound level is a bit low but damn, thank you for showing me that I don't need to waste my money on stainless steel.

Good video. Very interesting about the plates in the distilled water. Why did it do that?

Aluminum reacts. Therefore it's not a good material to use.

Not sure that it matters since you are just running current through electrolytic solution. I can tell you that when I go kayaking though, I take my stainless steel knife with me. I leave my more favored carbon steel knives at home as the carbon steel is more prone to rust. I just don't think it will matter for this application or at least not for years down the road anyway.

Rust is a result from the iron taking the oxygen out of the water and releasing Hydrogen. That being said makes you wonder how the caustic not allowing this reaction is a good thing when that's what electrolysis is supposed to do in the first place.

The research i found pointed to high carbon steel as a potentially good anode. The high level of carbon in it was found to help it reduce oxidation.

Thank you for your comment. The steel does eventually blister and fail; however, it lasts for many hours. This is enough time to do experiments at a low cost.

@@Jimscoolstuff grand pa, can you use graphite in the next video because read in a book that it is possible to split HHO without any electrolytes if graphite is used as anode and cathode,,,,,,,,,,,i am looking forward to that

You will be underwhelmed. Carbon or graphite plates may be slightly better BUT an electrolyte is COMPLETELY necessary for any serious gas production... will work without electrolyte but will hardly make anything...

Anyone who grasp the electrolysis will know that you can't use carbon steel as an electrode. Best affordable material for an average Joe is a non magnetic stainless, the best to be used is titanium or platinum, destilled water and KOH. What's the point in this video? hho myths are made for good 30years

@@Jimscoolstuff Does the chromium only produce hazardous compounds when using above some voltage? I've heard that low voltage makes stainless steel plates safe. Do you know more about that? And if it's true that a low enough voltage makes stainless steel plates safe, would there still be other advantages to titanium or platinum at that voltage?
